Cheryl Gray Beautiful grey heron Hello everyone, This month’s magazine has been changing daily as we heard of events being postponed and cancelled while we take in the impact of the way we are now living our lives. Future dates given through the magazine articles are obviously likely to change. Check out page 13 for details from Helen Lewis at Good Neighbours of how to get local help and also how to volunteer.

We wish everybody well and please do look out for updates on the Grapevine and locally and pass them on to any family, friends or neighbours who may not be on the internet. Stay safe. A Blacksmith’s Duty Hollesley’s Blacksmith, Andy Stebbens, tells the story behind the new Hollesley Village Sign:

I’ve been a Blacksmith since leaving school and after my apprenticeship had a forge at Rushmere St Andrew for a time, before moving to Hollesley in 1989 and starting a small workshop in Boyton Road. After moving to Run Cottage and expanding the business, some 20 years ago I approached the Parish Council Chairman, Dennis Driver, about making a sign for the village. Most village Blacksmiths always seem to make the church gates and the village sign but with one thing and another it never got done!

Ironically the company I did my apprenticeship with made the Hollesley Church gates just after the war and then a few years ago, when we had a huge deer problem, I was asked to make the gates for the new cemetery.

In 2016 it was suggested we C heryl Gray Dennis Driver and the wayward cover needed a new village sign and despite being retired from my blacksmith business and now just running the caravan site, I was more than happy to help; so you could say it’s taken over 20 years, but we got there in the end!

But how did it all start? After initial talks, the Parish Council asked residents for ideas of subjects that could be included in the January 2016 Village Voices. Many ideas came forward, including a design from Mrs Barbara Stammers that included the two Punch horses. Soon other items became very important: the rising sun that so many of us are lucky to see daily, the water and ship (based on the Hollesley Primary School logo), the 8 special bells

Page 4 April 2020 www.villagevoices.org.uk 1-20 April 2020 template_vv 20/03/2020 20:55 Page 5

housed in Hollesley Church and a nod to modern agriculture with the tractor. We wanted to ensure all the special things about Hollesley were on the sign but that it wasn’t too crowded.

All the ideas were passed to a company in Thetford, ‘The Village Sign People’ who put them together to come up with a final design.

With the design in place the fundraising started and very soon surpassed the target. Amazingly over £1,200 was donated by local residents and farms, over £800 was donated from special fundraising events, including a concert and the Community Café and the remaining funds were allocated by the Parish Council over a 3-year period. Contributed The physical making of the Andy Stebbens making the metal frame sign was delayed as the company were so busy, but finally in July 2018 we picked it up and once it was home, I could start work on the metal surround.

It had to be something to complement the design of the central panel, not too busy and being up high the light would shine through it. It had to be quite organic as we live in a rural area. So after a few rough sketches on paper, the whole design was first drawn out full size on a sheet of ply board and then material cut and and measured to fit. All scroll work had to be hand forged before finally being assembled and fitted to the oak post.

We were almost there … when the planning permission was in place (thank you East Suffolk Council!) the foundations and brick plinth could be built. I turned to local bricklayer, Roy Clarke who donated all his time, expertise and enthusiasm to building the magnificent plinth. He has done a fabulous job!

Dear friends,

As many of you will know, I have been appointed to the role of Team Rector of the Wilford Benefice, a role that I am very excited about. My licensing is to take place on Tuesday 28th April at 7.30pm at All Saints, Hollesley, and I hope to see many of you there.

So, a bit about myself ... I was born and grew up on the Hertfordshire-Essex border. After graduating from The University of Leeds with a degree in Economics I spent around 15 years working in Human Resources consultancy, working for clients in the UK, Europe and Middle East, so I am someone who has become a Priest later in life. I trained part-time on the Eastern Region Ministry Course based in Cambridge whilst still working as a Director in the HR Consultancy practice of a Global Professional Services firm based in London.

After being ordained, I served as Curate and then as an Assistant Priest in the Diocese of Chelmsford, before serving as Team Rector responsible for six churches in the St Albans Diocese. We then moved to Shropshire where I have been Rector for a multi-church Benefice and Rural Dean for the last four years.

I am married to Sara, who is an English teacher. In our spare time we enjoy walking and we are looking forward to exploring the beautiful walks on the Wilford Peninsula with our whippet-lurcher ‘Reggie’. One of our favourite walks is from Snape Maltings along the to St Botolph’s Iken. We also both enjoy gardening in our spare time and we both have a love of music and opera. I have been a follower of Leyton Orient Football Club since boyhood, which usually causes much mirth and incredulity amongst school children when I tell them!

It is a tremendous privilege for me to serve you as your Team Rector in the Wilford Benefice, and we are excited about moving to Orford and getting to know the different church congregations and communities across the Benefice. So please do come and say ‘hello’ if you see us around, or when I am walking my dog, or alternatively telephone or email me if you would like a chat. My official contact details are: Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01394 450610 (after 15 April)

Wishing you all a very happy and joyous Easter.

With all blessings

Coronavirus and Church Services

A message from the Church Lay Elders...

Following the recent announcement from the Bishops of Canterbury and York, sadly there will be no church services for the foreseeable future.

It is going to be a huge adjustment to us not to gather together for public worship, not least because that is precisely what we want to do in a time of crisis. We must however observe this strictly, because of the risk of communicating infection. However, our churches will be kept open for people to come in and pray on their own. Many of the churches have a way to request prayer or support, so please do use it if you need to. Morning Prayer is being live-streamed every morning at 8.30am, Monday to Saturday, on the Bishops’ Facebook page @BishopsCofEsuffolk or on the App ‘Daily Prayer’. Evening Prayer is being live-streamed from the Cathedral Monday to Saturday at 5.30pm on the Cathedral Facebook page @Stedscathedral. Sunday morning eucharist will be celebrated live streamed from 10.30am, again on the Cathedral Facebook page. If you do not have a facebook account, you can link at www.cofesuffolk.org/bishops/ broadcasting-live-services to get recorded services. At such a time as this, we need to care for ourselves in these very strange times, but we must look after our neighbours, especially those who are most vulnerable, such as the housebound and the elderly.

With the churches closed for services, we are currently still planning our two walks, please feel free to join us at one of them if you can: Good Friday - 9.00am - Alderton-, Prayer Walk - Barry Vincent Fri 10 April - 12.00pm - -Sutton, Prayer Walk - Lay Elders/churchwardens

Also, we are hoping to hold the sunrise service at Shingle Street at 5:45am on Easter day (Martello Tower end).

Their latest idea is to affix an image of a rainbow in your home. The children can count them as they go on their walks around the village. We are blessed with such creative people in the village.

Dog Poo – Volunteering opportunity!

Hollesley PC are looking for a volunteer to pick up the dog mess left in various locations in the village, by irresponsible dog owners. There is no renumeration for this role but bags and gloves will be provided. Don’t fancy it yourself? No, we didn’t think you would, and why should you? If you are a dog owner, picking up after it has pooped is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and nobody else’s. There are numerous bins in the village and bags are just pennies and can be purchased from Hollesley Shop.

Annual Parish Meeting

Please pop this date into your diaries…. Tuesday 12 May, 7.00pm at the Village Hall….this will be the Annual Parish Meeting for Hollesley. Our guest speaker will be Mark Howard, Deputy Governor of HMP & YOI Hollesley Bay; this will be your opportunity to ask him questions about the prison.

Hollesley New Cemetery

During 2020, HPC are reviewing the way we manage the Cemetery and all the processes and documentation we use. There will be much more at the Annual Parish Meeting but at the February meeting some decisions were made.

It was agreed to continue the rule that no dogs are permitted in the cemetery. It was felt the cemetery is a place where people go to remember their loved ones and anyone visiting may not wish to visit whilst dogs were in the location. Of course, some dogs are very well behaved and some owners are conscientious. However, that is not the case for all so a blanket ban has to be in force. The only exception to this would be service dogs; dogs who guide the blind or partially sighted and registered dogs who provide other services to their handlers.

To help dog owners with this rule we will be placing a ‘tie up’ ring outside the cemetery gates and there is a dog bin just along School Road.

Hollesley Village hall

Hollesley Village Hall is 50 years old and needs a new roof. 50 years ago I was in my 30’s!

Raise money for Solar Panels and save money!

Reduce our Carbon Footprint in this Climate Emergency!

Hollesley Village Hall provides a venue for meetings, parties, community cafe, clubs of all kinds, Just42, Bowls, Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, Karate, Whist and Drama and anything else I have missed! It is used by many residents from other villages as well as Hollesley. By installing solar panels on the new roof, the hall’s running costs will be reduced; we will be able to charge our electric cars and also receive something back for the electricity we export to the Grid. We need to raise £15,000 so anything you can give will be most welcome!

Sponsored Bike Ride for Solar Panels

On 18 May, I shall set off from my home in The Street, Hollesley to cycle around 200 miles in 6 days from Suffolk to Norfolk and back again on my battery assisted Brompton bike. I hope some of the school will be able to start out with me or wave me off! You can sponsor me in three different ways. Envelopes will be available to pick up and pop some money in, There will be a sponsor sheet in McColls and the Village hall or you will be able to go on line to Just Giving and donate.

Thank you very much. More details of the route will be in next month’s edition.

Helen has said that her bike ride maybe postponed Helen Lewis until the summer. We will give details of dates when we know them.

Winners of the February 200 club were Paul and Lyn Ross. Liz Mark and Val Dudley. Have you joined yet? If you wish to join, set up a standing order for £5 with your bank: the bank details are sort code 30-99-85 and acc: 00505746. Email [email protected] to tell us what number you would like.

Boyton Parish Council

A big thank you from Boyton Parish Council.

Now that we’re almost ready to get the Boyton defibrillator up and running, we’d like to thank all the people who have generously contributed to the cost, from the time we started fundraising last spring with East Suffolk’s predecessor (Suffolk Coastal District Council).

Since then we’ve had brilliant support also from Orwell Housing, the Village Voices Trust, Suffolk County Council, and local Boyton businesses, Mortiers and Capel St Andrew Farms, as well as Finlay Motors. Plus of course the contribution from the coconut shy at last year’s Boyton Fete (thank you Jenny!).

This has enabled us to sign an agreement with the Community Heartbeat Trust to provide the defibrillator device itself, as well as a secure cabinet and a press- to-speak emergency 999 phone which will (hopefully) be installed in the old BT phone box by the time you read this.

The agreement means the liability for the equipment is CHT’s responsibility, and they will ensure that it’s in perfect working order at all times. The other big advantage for us is that CHT will claim the VAT back on our behalf, so it saves time for our hard-working parish clerk!

Many thanks again to all our contributors

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor

Michael and I wish to thank everyone for your good wishes, cards and gifts on the occasion of Ruth’s retirement. The extremely generous gifts of £1,000 of garden vouchers, gardening tools and the picture of the walled garden at Scargill House, drawn by the late Margaret Keeling of Boyton are very much appreciated. By the time this magazine is published, we will have moved out of the vicarage to our new home in Tiptree, Essex. We are sure to be back from time to time and will welcome visitors to Tiptree any time. With thanks for all we have shared over the last ten years and all good wishes for the future.

Revd Ruth & Revd Michael Hatchett Dear Editor,

Do you remmber that bra you bought .....

...the one that looked so nice but never really fitted and is just languishing at the back of your drawer? Sweet Dreams, the lingerie and swimwear boutique in Woodbridge Thoroughfare, is taking part in the nationwide Bra Bank scheme raising urgently needed funds for breast cancer research. In addition, the same bras help

support small businesses in Africa. The bra bank Conributed Together with recycling partners, a textile recovery project prevents the bras going into landfill giving them a new lease of life in parts of Africa where bras remain too expensive to produce. For every tonne collected the charity ‘Against Breast Cancer’ receives £700 to fund research. Time to sort out that drawer ... and be grateful we don’t have to buy our bras like this!

Dear Editor,

It was 17 February. I walked down to the bottom greenhouse at the edge of the field, so not a warm spot being open to the North Sea only one field away, just to see how things were growing at the bottom of it. To my joy, I picked a lovely lettuce, spring onions and little tomatoes on the bush and from last summer, eight lovely potatoes. I have never picked vegetables from my greenhouse this early in the year. I love it and thought ‘must write to Village Voices and get other people to use the bottom of their greenhouse in winter – you have nothing to lose and what joy to eat for free’. I was weeding chickweed and I could hear my lovely hens calling out to me saying, ‘Bring it to us.’ and oh boy, did they go mad and ate every bit very quickly. I looked in the next box to find four lovely eggs for my breakfast. You can’t beat home grown so get in the garden or even plant up pots with veg next to your flowerpots. You can have dinner for free and no miles on the clock. Even if you only grow one thing, do give it a try you will soon be hooked once you have tasted the fruits of your labour. Happy gardening, Jean Garnham P.S. I scattered these seeds in October and don’t forget to water every two weeks. P.P.S I have to walk with a stick! So we can all grow something, can’t we?

Cancelled for now but watch this space!

Your Community Garden needs YOU

Hello everyone, this is a exciting time for the Community Garden. Spring is here again and time to get working on the garden for another year. We are in dire need of a few more volunteers to serve on our committee, so anyone who could help out for a couple of hours every other month would be made very welcome.

We are also hoping to have a working afternoon once a month on the first Saturday of the summer months - more details to follow. I would also like to expand our free veg scheme so any one who is a gardener and has a surplus in the season, please place the it outside the gate and anyone who would like some please help yourself.

In the mean time remember the Garden is always open for every one to come in and have a sit down and a natter. If there is anything you would like any information please feel free to give me a call.

Keith Hollesley Garden Club At our February meeting, Sarah Cook gave us a most interesting and informative talk with slides on Cedric Morris irises.

Our next speaker was planned to be Hayley Churchyard to give us a talk on the Suffolk Heritage Garden at the Suffolk Punch Trust at the Hollesley Bowls Club at 7.30 on 15th April.

In the present circumstances, this meeting will not go ahead and we will let you know when meetings can resume.

From the Horse's Mouth. We ponies and horses would like to thank all who support the Hollesley Community Cafe which has given us a generous donation that goes towards our feed. We miss our old stables at Sutton. We are on heavy clay at Clopton and we cannot go out in the fields to kick up our heels. The fields are water logged and so we need extra feed. Thank you again.

We hear the Community Cafe is under new management but we thank Rev. Ruth for all she started in Hollesley and wish her and her husband a happy retirement.

‘Eyes down’ - we certainly did and enjoyed our February evening of Bingo with fish and chips. There were lots of winners, with one table being especially lucky, and the fish and chips were cooked to perfection by Steve and Mandy from the van. How they managed to serve up all our suppers as well as their usual customers was amazing, so huge thanks to them. Meryl, our caller, kept us on our toes and it was a fun evening.

Our walking group ventured out the next day despite Storm

Dennis being on the horizon, Gray Cheryl Lovely fish and chip supper starting off at Sutton Heath. Di Shepherd’s semicircular route took in lovely views including the beautiful snowdrops pictured. After 4 miles, a detour to the Shottisham Sorrel Horse was a welcome and really enjoyable pit stop. They walked just over 6 miles altogether (a little more than usual) but a nice steady pace allowed for taking in the scenery. At least they worked off Friday night’s fish and chips! Thanks to Tara for the report and photo.

Some members attended the SEFWI AGM on the 3 March and, as well as the usual stalls, were treated to three interesting speakers - Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Women in the armed services and finally Danny Crates, former paralympian who held the 800m record for over a decade. His inspirational story, from losing an arm in a car crash aged 21 and continuing to play rugby, scuba diving and of course winning many medals was entertaining. I have looked him up on the internet and his disability has definitely not stopped him doing anything. The list of his achievements is amazing and he’s not 50 yet!

As ever, we have lots on offer, from interesting speakers at our meetings, to outings, theatre trips as well as crafts and activities from our Suffolk East Federation too. Give us a try, we’re a friendly bunch.

The April meeting has been cancelled but we look forward to seeing you soon.

Nature Note - Do you know what the commonest British bird is? Not, as you might have guessed, the wood pigeon, the house sparrow, the starling or the robin. There’s probably one in your garden now, in fact, but it’s a bird more often heard than seen – in an inversion of the rule that Victorian parents tried to apply to their noisy children. It has a loud, piercing song out of all proportion to its tiny size, full of pulsing trills and stuttering exclamations. Locate the source and you may catch a glimpse of a dumpy little brown bird with a cocked tail flicking busily through the undergrowth. Yes, it’s a wren, and there are some 10 million pairs of them in Britain.

It’s a good month to see them because this is the time of peak activity for nest building and mating. Imagine building something as complicated and perfect as a bird’s nest in about two weeks, using only your mouth! And wrens make it even harder for themselves.

The male may have to build up to ten different nests for his potential mate to select from. The female tours these proper- ties, and if she is attracted by one she chooses that as her family home; and only after- wards, as a secondary matter, she chooses the cock bird that

produced it as well. They then Contributed mate and rear their family. The wren

But the male’s multiple DIY efforts are not entirely wasted, since all those extra nests offer him scope for other assignations. In short, he tries to fill his vacant properties with as many females as possible to maximise the numbers of his offspring, however tiring the consequences.

When I was working in the USA years ago, I made friends with a New York birdwatcher with whom I used to compare American and British birds in our rambles round Central Park. We once talked about the differences between our two wrens, which are basically the same species in both countries but are mon- ogamous in the USA and polygamous in the UK. I remembered this conversa- tion when my friend later told me about a literary competition in a New York magazine for a bird poem in the form of a clerihew. Now, a clerihew is a sort of satirical poem with a particular rhyming scheme like this:

Edgar Allen Poe Was passionately fond of roe. He always liked to chew some When writing anything gruesome

So, I submitted the following:

The bold British wren Is a man among men.

He can service a dozen Unlike his Yankee cousin

My friend said I would become an overnight sensation, but this doesn’t seem to have happened.

Quicksand gets new warning sign

A young resident of Hollesley has welcomed the introduction of a new sign, warning visitors to Shingle Street of quicksand in the lagoon at low tide.

Freya Mitchell was visiting Shingle Street on the morning of her ninth birthday on 31 October 2019 when she became stuck up to her waist in the mud. ‘At first I thought she was messing around ‘, explained Claire, Freya’s Mum. ‘But soon I realised it was very serious and she was starting to panic. I had to crawl along the mud and told her to point her feet and abandon her wellington boots in The new quicksand warning sign order to pull her out’

This was the second incident reported to Hollesley Parish Council; the first was a gentleman who became stuck in exactly the same place in back in 2017. ‘We realised that two incidents were two to many” explained the Parish Clerk, ‘and we had to try to get some clear warning sign erected’.

Both the owners of th e land and the District Council were very quick to offer their support and Warren Hoskins-Davies, Assistant Coastal Engineer at East Suffolk Council arranged for the sign to be constructed and put up. ‘We are very happy to provide initial support for this project’, Warren commented.

The Parish Council are going to own and maintain the sign going forward and hopefully it will prevent others becoming stuck. In support of the sign also was Peter Sproxton, local MH Coastguard officer. ‘Signs and Lifebelts have been erected in the past but as the shingle moves so much, they often disappear. This sign is in a much better location and the majority of visitors to Shingle Street should notice it’. From our Country Kitchen Smoked Mackerel Pate (for 2)

This will provide a light lunch or starter.

Ingredients

1 smoked mackerel fillet 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp hot horseradish sauce 1 dsp creme fraiche Black pepper Cucumber slices A few parsley leaves Salad Toasted bread

Method

Remove the skin and any bones from the mackerel fillet and tear into small pieces. Using a fork, mash the fish to a smoother consistency. Stir in the lemon juice, horseradish sauce and creme fraiche. Season with ground black pepper.

Slice the cucumber on to kitchen paper and blot dry. Arrange the slices on 2 plates. Divide the pate and spoon onto the cucumber. Garnish with parsley. Serve with salad leaves and toasted bread. I always use Linseed and Treacle Bread (recipe on the Village Voices website).

As there has been a growing interest in vegetarian and vegan food, we thought it would be useful to add this information to the list of recipes that have been in previous editions of Village Voices.

They are available on our website: villagevoices.org.uk. On the home page, scroll down to From Our Country Kitchen and click on the link.

Suffolk Punch Trust

We have had to make the heart breaking decision not to open the Suffolk Punch Trust as planned on 27 March, following the guidelines set out by the Government this week. Our priority is to keep the public, our staff and volunteers safe whilst continuing to give the best care to our Suffolk Punches and other animals on site.

Our skeleton staff will carry on stud duties as normal and the office will be staffed on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the foreseeable future. All volunteers are asked to suspend their normal visits unless specifically Contributed Best friends contacted by the Trust. Our emails and answer machine will be monitored daily but if anyone local spots an animal related emergency please contact Stud Manager, Tracey Pettitt on 07776 210238.

We very much hope this will be a short lived measure and will keep you up to date on social media. We are in the middle of lambing and have foals due between now and early May so we’ll be posting as many photos and videos online as possible - find us on Facebook and Instagram.

Our website www.thesuffolkpunchtrust.co.uk will be kept up to date so we’ll let you know when we’re able to open the gates to visitors again. Contributed Mum and baby As a small stand-alone charity, we are as vulnerable as anyone else in the tourist and hospitality industry. If you can support us in any way, we would be eternally grateful - we plan to open an online shop for branded merchandise in the near future, but in the meantime you can ring or email us to adopt a horse, forward-purchase a day pass for friends and family, or become a Friend of the Trust. Your call may not be answered immediately but we will get back to you within a few days.

Please stay safe and well, we look forward to welcoming everyone back later in the year.

Heritage Garden We have made a new circular flowerbed in the centre of the ‘horseshoe’ bed to accommodate the new Betula Pendula ‘Silver Grace’ I managed to source from Bluebell Arboretum in Derbyshire, as the last one didn’t survive. The history behind this silver birch is that Bernard Tickner created a garden with his wife, Bess, at Fullers Mill in 1958, adjacent to Lackford Lakes at West Stow. He introduced the ‘Silver Grace ‘when he noticed it growing as a seedling near the lakeside. Bernard Tickner was Head Brewer for Green King.

The Suffolk Heritage Garden will be open to the public from 27 March 4 days a week; Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday 10.30-4.00pm. Please NOTE, entrance to the garden, shop and café is FREE.

Our Suffolk Hardy plants will be on sale and all proceeds and donations will be greatly appreciated to continue the maintenance of this National collection.

Hayley Churchyard Contributed Betula Pendula ‘Silver Grace’ DAFT newsflash!

Recently I've been asked whether DAFT (Deben Animal Fundraising Team) still exists. Yes, it does, but in a less pro-active form. There are only a few of us in the team - we were hoping that we'd get support from younger people with more energy and free time, but it wasn't to be. During 2017-2019 we raised over £9,600 for Suffolk Animal Rescue.

We have decided to 'change down a gear' and fundraise for much smaller charities of our choice 'as and when we can spare the time'. The charities we choose to support could help animals both wild and domestic, in both the UK and overseas (racism isn't part of our ethos - a precious life is a precious life).

We will continue to have stalls at local venues. If you have items we could sell, we can still take them as long as they're not too big (no books or clothes.)

Thanks for your support over the years.
