POLICE Newsletter APR-JUN 2016 Second Quarter 2016 Edition AMISOM POLICE newsletter APR-JUN 2016 Second Quarter 2016 Edition Message from the Police Commissioner Welcome to this edition of the AMISOM Police e-Newsletter. It is inspiring to note that during this period, AMISOM Police Component continued to provide a diverse range of capacity building initiatives and programmes designed to support Somalia Police, along the lines of police reform, training, mentoring, operational support and capacity enhancement, both in Mogadishu and in the Federal Member States. The Individual Police Officers and Formed Police Units are collocated with the Somali Police at the Police Headquarters, the General Kahiye Police Academy, four Police Divisions in the Banaadir Region, and in the capitals of the Federal Member States, Baidoa, Kismayo and Beletweyne. The only incident to occur saw the defection of over 30 personnel from the Puntland Armed Forces. These defectors arrived in Laas Caanood where they were welcomed with open arms by the Somaliland Government. In discussion it turns out the defectors- and this group is not the only set to defect recently- did so due to clan reasons. The meetings of the Executive Council and the Assembly will take place next week (See article) A Ministerial Retreat for the Executive Council of the African Union is being held January 24- 26, in Bahr Dar, capital of the Amhara Regional State. The theme of the Retreat is: “Defining Agenda 2063: Towards a peaceful, Integrated and Prosperous Africa.” (See article) The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Dr Nkozasana Dlamini Zuma, paid a one day official visit to Juba, South Sudan on Monday (January 20), meeting President Salva Kiir, as well as the detainees. Ethiopia Prime Minister Hailemariam arrived for an official visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sunday (January 19). He held talks with Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice- President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, and also attended the World Future Energy Summit held in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
