It is abstract painting of unmistakable accuracy.” – Unquiet Landscape (p.145 Christopher Neve) The work of British painter Ivon Hitchens (1893 – 1979) is much-loved for his highly distinctive style in which great swathes of colour sweep across the long panoramic canvases that were to define his career. He sought to express the inner harmony and rhythm of landscape, the experience, not of how things look but rather how they feel. A true pioneer of the abstracted vision of landscape, his portrayal of the English countryside surrounding his home in West Sussex would go on to form one of the key ideas of British Mod- ernism in the 20thCentury. A founding member of the Seven & Five Society, the influential group of painters and sculptors that was responsible for bringing the ideas of the European avant-garde to London in the 30s, Hitchens was progres- sive long before the evolution of his more abstracted style post-war. Early on he felt a compulsion to move away from the traditional pictorial language of art school and towards the development of a personal language. -

He rather liked that he was regarded as an abstract painter in England, with its love of figuration, and as a figurative painter in America, where they respect abstraction. Two exhibitions last year at the National Portrait Gallery and in Wakefield, Absent Friends and Painting India, the first of which opened days after his death, and now a show of his final works opening tomorrow at Gagosian Gallery in London, remind us that he was so much more than the general characterisation of his work — the painter of small paintings on panel that are records of a social encounter in an “intimiste” domestic interior. Of course, many of his paintings do capture the character, and even the appearance, of friends. But the principal subjects of these paintings are emotion and mood; attraction and allure; seduction and love; conversation and argument; words left hanging in the air. -

The Big Draw in partnership with Bodleian Libraries, Museum of the History of Science, The Story Museum, Modern Art Oxford, Old Fire Station, Ashmolean Museum, Pitt Rivers Museum, and Oxford University Museum of Natural History. For immediate release Oxford hosts launch of the world’s biggest drawing festival On 19 September 2015, renowned author, Philip Pullman, and Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, will launch international drawing festival, The Big Draw 2015, at a free public event championing visual literacy and connecting nine venues across Oxford in an epic celebration of creativity. Hosted by the world famous Bodleian Libraries, and announced by celebrated author Philip Pullman and Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell, the launch of this year’s Big Draw Festival will champion the universal language of drawing and highlight the importance of creativity in education, literature and society. Following a public launch at the Weston Library, Bodleian Libraries, a free WalK & Draw Trail will connect nine of Oxford’s leading galleries, museums and arts organisations demonstrating the relevance of drawing across all sectors and revealing this year’s Big Draw theme, Every Drawing Tells a Story. Throughout the international Big Draw festival (1-31 October), visitors can discover treasures old and new in creative worKshops at each Oxford venue, using a map specially designed by artist Adam Dant. The launch will offer over twenty unique activities for all ages, starting in the Weston Library with an open invitation to sign in to the world’s longest visitors’ book, drawing alongside famous and budding illustrators. MESSAGE FROM BODLEY’S LIBRARIAN The Bodleian is currently in its fifth century of serving the University of Oxford and the wider world of scholarship. In 2017 we launched a new strategy; this has been revised in 2018 to be in line with the University’s new strategic plan (www.ox.ac.uk/about/organisation/strategic-plan). This new strategy has been formulated to enable the Bodleian Libraries to achieve three key aims for its work during the period 2018-2022, to: 1. help ensure that the University of Oxford remains at the forefront of academic teaching and research worldwide; 2. contribute leadership to the broader development of the world of information and libraries for society; and 3. provide a sustainable operation of the Libraries. The Bodleian exists to serve the academic community in Oxford and beyond, and it strives to ensure that its collections and services remain of central importance to the current state of scholarship across all of the academic disciplines pursued in the University. It works increasingly collaboratively with other parts of the University: with college libraries and archives, and with our colleagues in GLAM, the University’s Gardens, Libraries and Museums. Of Different Complexions: Religious Diversity and National Identity in James II’s Toleration Campaign* by Scott Sowerby One of the most remarkable speeches ever given by an English monarch was delivered by James II in the city of Chester on 27 August 1687. This speech deserves the attention of historians but has never been published, surviving only in a first-hand account written by a Cheshire gentleman in his diary. That diary has been held for the past eighty years in the municipal archives of Liverpool.1 Like many similar diaries, it largely consists of an unembellished record of the diarist’s daily appointments as he called on his neighbours.
