Conversational Implicature, Thought, and Communication Conversational implicature, thought, and communication Jeff Speaks October 17, 2006 Abstract. Some linguistic phenomena can occur in uses of language in thought, whereas others only occur in uses of language in communication. I argue that this distinction can be used as a test for whether some phenomenon can be explained via Grice’s theory of conversational implicature (or any theory similarly based on principles governing conversation). I argue further, on the basis of this test, that conversational implicature cannot be used to explain quantifier domain restriction or apparent substitution failures involving coreferential names, but that it must be used to explain the the phenomenon of referential uses of definite descriptions. I conclude with a brief discussion of the relevance of this to the semantics/pragmatics distinction. It is now a commonplace that what a speaker means, asserts, or conveys by an utterance of a sentence can go beyond what the sentence means (semantically expresses) in the context of utterance. It is, however, controversial which cases fit this description. One such controversial case concerns quantifier domain restriction. Suppose, standing in my apartment after a party, I say to my wife dejectedly, ‘Every bottle is empty.’ What is uncontroversial is that what I convey by this utterance is not that every bottle in the universe is empty, but that every bottle in the apartment is empty. What is controversial is how this phenomenon should be explained. On one view, the semantic strategy, the sentence ‘Every bottle is empty’ is context- sensitive; it expresses a different proposition relative to different contexts of utterance. This might be because, for example, the logical form of the sentence contains a variable whose value is the domain of quantification, and the value of this variable varies with contexts of utterance (Stanley and Szab´o(2000)). According to an opposed pragmatic strategy, the sentence literally means (semantically expresses) the false proposition that every bottle in the universe is empty; there is some other non-semantic explanation of the fact that in this scenario I manage to convey the restricted proposition that every bottle in the apartment is empty. Email: [email protected]. 1 drank all of the liquor in our apartment.’ There is certainly a sense in which this reply is, even if not helpful, on target; the pragmatic strategy has a nice explanation of this in terms of its claim that the original sentence is literally false. One who endorses the pragmatic strategy must say how a proposition p can be con- veyed by an utterance of a sentence which, in the context, means something other than p. According to a Gricean version of the pragmatic strategy, this explanation is given in terms of certain rules governing conversation. Grice’s idea was that in some utterances, one can convey a proposition by conversationally implicating it. One conversationally im- plicates a proposition p by an utterance when (roughly) the following three conditions are satisfied: (1) the speaker is presumed to be cooperative, in the sense that he is following the maxims of conversation; (2) the assumption that the speaker thinks p is required to bring his utterance into conformity with the conversational maxims; and (3) the speaker thinks that the audience is capable of seeing both that (2) is true, and that the speaker thinks that (2) is true (Grice, 1975, 30-1).1 In the present case, the utterance of a sentence which means that every bottle (in the universe) is empty is an utterance of a sentence which is obviously false, and so violates the Maxim of Quality. So, if we are to assume that the speaker is being cooperative, we must assume that the speaker was trying to get across some distinct, not obviously false proposition; it seems likely that this proposition should be related to the obviously false one which was literally expressed by the sentence; given the context, the obvious choice is the proposition that every bottle in the apartment is empty.2 1 Conversational implicature and uses of language in thought But there is a problem about applying the apparatus of conversational implicature in the case of quantifier domain restriction: the phenomena to be explained can be generated in cases of language use outside of conversations. The most important such cases concern uses of language in thought. Suppose that my wife went to bed before the end of the party, and that after the last guest leaves, I say dejectedly to myself, ‘Every bottle is empty.’ This case seems strikingly similar to the one described above, in which I use the same sentence in conversation. It would be just as natural to describe the case as one in which I said to myself that every bottle in the apartment was empty as it would be to give the corresponding description of my utterance of the same sentence, in conversation, to my wife. But despite this similarity, it does not seem open to the same explanation: sitting alone after the party I was not engaged in a conversation, and hence was not subject to the conversational maxims. And this seems to cast doubt on the original Gricean explanation of the utterance to my wife; to the extent that the phenomena seem the same, an explanation which rests on features specific to one is ad hoc. Could a proponent of the Gricean explanation reply that thought is a kind of conver- sation with oneself, and so is governed by the same maxims as multi-party conversations? Not very plausibly. But we cannot give the same explanation of my use of ‘Every bottle is empty’ in thought. Even if we grant that I count as the audience of my own utterance here, we should ask: Is it really the case that I manage to use this sentence to say to myself that every bottle in the apartment is empty only because I think that I am capable of working out that the assumption that I believe this is needed to make my utterance to myself consistent with the norms of conversation and, further, think that I know that I am capable of working out that I think this? Even if I could have these strange beliefs on an occasion, it hardly seems that they are required for me to use ‘Every bottle is empty’ in thought to mean that every bottle in the apartment is empty.3 3So this argument is distinct from the familiar argument against Gricean analyses of speaker-meaning in terms of audience-directed intentions which is based on the possibility of meaning something by an utterance without having an audience. That argument relies on the controversial claim that one cannot regard oneself as an audience in cases of ‘speaking to oneself’; the above argument does not rely on this claim, but only on the claim that one can use sentences like ‘Every bottle is empty’ in thought without having the bizarre beliefs which an explanation of such uses in terms of conversational implicature would require. Thanks to an anonymous referee for pressing this point. It’s also important to note that nothing hangs on the view that the conversational implicatures are in this case generated by violations of the Maxim of Quality. As Kent Bach notes in ‘Quantification, Qualification, and Context’, we can generate cases of quantifier domain restriction with obviously true as well as obviously false sentences. In the present case, if I had uttered ‘Not every bottle is empty’, I would have succeeded in conveying the restricted proposition that not every bottle in the apartment is empty, despite the fact that the original sentence (according to the pragmatic strategy) expresses the true proposition that not every bottle in the universe is empty. For this reason it seems right that the most plausible version of the Gricean story about quantifier domain restriction takes my conveying the proposition that every bottle in the apartment is empty to be an instance of ‘conversational impliciture’ generated by the utterance’s ‘obvious lack of relevant specificity’ rather than a conversational implicature generated by its obvious falsity. But the argument against Gricean explanations above depends not on which maxim is violated (truth vs. specificity) but rather the very idea that the fact that the speaker means the relevant proposition p depends upon the speaker’s believing, of some maxim or other, that the audience believes that the speaker’s thinking p is required to bring the speaker into conformity with that maxim (whatever it is).

    Appeared in Philosophical Review 105 (1998), pp. 555-595. Understanding Belief Reports David Braun In this paper, I defend a well-known theory of belief reports from an important objection. The theory is Russellianism, sometimes also called `neo-Russellianism', `Millianism', `the direct reference theory', `the "Fido"-Fido theory', or `the naive theory'. The objection concerns substitution of co-referring names in belief sentences. Russellianism implies that any two belief sentences, that differ only in containing distinct co-referring names, express the same proposition (in any given context). Since `Hesperus' and `Phosphorus' both refer to the planet Venus, this view implies that all utterances of (1) and (2) express the same proposition and have the same truth value.1 (1) Hammurabi believes that Hesperus is visible in the evening. (2) Hammurabi believes that Phosphorus is visible in the evening. The Substitution Objection is basically this: utterances of (1) and (2) can differ in truth value. More cautiously: a competent speaker could rationally think that they differ in truth value, and that is very strong evidence that they can. Two of the best-known proponents of Russellianism, Nathan Salmon and Scott Soames, have formulated a (by now familiar) reply to the Substitution Objection.2 They say that speakers who think that utterances of (1) and (2) differ in truth value are failing to distinguish correctly between what the utterances semantically express and what they pragmatically convey. Utterances of these sentences can pragmatically convey propositions that differ in truth value, 1 and so speakers who do not correctly distinguish between what they pragmatically convey and what they semantically express may wrongly judge that the utterances themselves differ in truth value.

DIRECT REFERENCE AND VAGUE IDENTITY In 1957, reporters asked maverick producer Mike Todd why he bought a huge 29-carat engagement ring for Elizabeth Taylor. Todd answered “Thirty carats would have been vulgar.” Todd’s quip absurdly implies he knew that 30 carats is the threshold for vulgarity. But most philosophers think stopping here misses the root of the joke. They think there is a more fundamental absurdity; that it is even possible for a single carat to make the difference between a vulgar ring and a non-vulgar ring. We epistemicists defend the possibility. The law of bivalence implies that discriminative terms (ones that apply to some but not all things) have sharp boundaries. Consequently, classical logic permits few degrees of freedom when solving the sorites paradox. One can follow the incoherentists (Wheeler 1967, Unger 1979) and conclude that nothing is vulgar. One can blaze a new path and conclude everything is vulgar. Or one could follow the epistemicists and say that there are some vulgar things, some non-vulgar things, and nothing lies between the Vulgar and the Non-vulgar. Epistemicism goes beyond conservatism about logic. Ordinary vocabulary must also be preserved. We epistemicists think that ordinary words apply to pretty much what ordinary folks assume they apply to. Thus our double conservatism obeys the time-honored dictum Loquendum enim est ut plures, sentiendum ut pauci (Augustine Niphus Comm. In Aristotelem de 1 Gen. Et. Corr., Bk. I, folio 29). “Think with the learned and speak with the vulgar.” Do epistemicists have a passion for precision?     COMMENTS ON NATHAN SALMON “ARE GENERAL TERMS RIGID”* Robert May Princeton Semantics Workshop 17 May 2003 1. Nathan Salmon paper is entitled with a question: are general terms rigid? He asks this question in way of engaging the issue of the extension of the notion of rigidity beyond the domain of singular terms. While singular terms has been the province of most of the discussion of this rigidity since Naming and Necessity, it is well known that Kripke saw the notion extending to at least certain general terms such as terms for natural kinds. Scott Soames has recently weighed in on this issue in the latter chapters of his book Beyond Rigidity. His conclusion is that although there are significant overlaps in the properties of singular and general terms, there is no direct extension of rigidity to the general terms, and that rigid designation is properly applied only to singular terms. Salmon disagrees. His view, based in part of views dating back to his book Reference and Essence, is that there is an extension to be had, one which allows the application of the standard Kripkean characterization of rigidity to be applied to both sorts of terms. Central to his thesis is a claim about the status of certain definite descriptions. In these remarks, I will try to outline the issues to which NS is reacting, and the proposal he posits in response.     May 2005 May 2005 Kripke on Epistemic and Metaphysical Possibility: Two Routes to the Necessary Aposteriori by Scott Soames School of Philosophy USC To Appear in Saul Kripke Edited by Alan Berger Cambridge University Press 1 Saul Kripke’s discussion of the necessary aposteriori in Naming and Necessity and “Identity and Necessity” -- in which he lays the foundation for distinguishing epistemic from metaphysical possibility, and explaining the relationship between the two – is, in my opinion, one of the outstanding achievements of twentieth century philosophy.1 My aim in this essay is to extract the enduring lessons of his discussion, and disentangle them from certain difficulties which, alas, can also be found there. I will argue that there are, in fact, two Kripkean routes to the necessary aposteriori – one correct and philosophically far-reaching, the other incorrect and philosophically misleading.2 Propositions Although Kripke avoids the word ‘proposition’ in Naming and Necessity, and tries to keep his theoretical commitments to a minimum, he speaks repeatedly of the necessary or contingent “statements,” and “truths” knowable apriori or aposteriori, that sentences express. Evidently, then, he thinks that there are things expressed by sentences that are that are both bearers of truth value and objects of attitudes like knowledge. Since this is what propositions are supposed to be, his discussion can be understood as implicitly involving propositions, while avoiding, as far as possible, substantive theoretical commitments about what they are. Thus, it should be safe to introduce the word into our discussion, so long as we limit our assumptions about propositions to those that are least objectionable, and most in tune with Kripke’s implicit presuppositions.

Special attention will be devoted to discussing the con- ception of modes of presentation as mental files and to elucidating the nature of coordination. A third solution to Frege’s puzzle will be ex- plored which, like Salmon’s and Braun’s, adopts the Millian-Russellian semantics but, like Fine’s, involves coordination instead of modes of presentation; however, coordination will not be conceived as a semantic relation but as a cognitive and subjective relation, which provides no contribution to semantic content. This novel Millian-Russellian account involving cognitive coordination will be labelled cognitive relationism. Not much later, his seminal work on “Semantical Analysis of Intuitionistic Logic” appeared. Shortly after that came his founding of transfinite recursion theory with his two classic papers, “Transfinite Recursions on Admissible Ordinals” and “Admissible Ordinals and the Analytic Hierarchy.” Had he accomplished nothing else in his intellectual life, Kripke would have already earned his claim to fame. But his thoughts in what turned out to be his greatest area of accomplishment, philosophy, were just beginning to gel. Already as a college student he had the basic ideas of his classic seminal work, Naming and Necessity, which was to revolutionize the field of philosophy. The work revealed what has become a hallmark of Kripke: his conceptual clarity par excellence. While continuing to develop his ideas in mathematical logic, he developed many important thoughts in philosophy. His work on a new theory of truth for dealing with the Epimenides paradox (the semantical paradox of the liar), on a puzzle about belief, and on his novel interpretation of Wittgenstein on rules and private language have dominated discussion and generated an industry on these topics. Today, Kripke’s accomplishments span several areas of philosophy, including epistemology; metaphysics; and philosophy of language, logic, mathematics, and mind; as well as areas of mathematical logic and more recently of linguistics as well.

If it has not been established already, this book will doubtless cement Stevens’ place amongst the leading Russell scholars in the world today.     Frege’s puzzle is about identity after all Elmar Unnsteinsson Preprint. Please cite published version: Philosophy and Phenomenological Research (2019) 99(3):628–643 doi:10.1111/phpr.12516 Abstract Many philosophers have argued or taken for granted that Frege’s puzzle has little or nothing to do with identity statements. I show that this is wrong, arguing that the puzzle can only be motivated relative to a thinker’s be- liefs about the identity or distinctness of the relevant object. The result is important, as it suggests that the puzzle can be solved, not by a semantic theory of names or referring expressions as such, but simply by a theory of identity statements. To show this, I sketch a framework for developing so- lutions of this sort. I also consider how this result could be implemented by two inuential solutions to Frege’s puzzle, Perry’s referential-reexivism and Fine’s semantic relationism. 1 A puzzle about identity What exactly does Frege’s puzzle have to do with identity or identity statements? Interestingly, according to what Joan Weiner (1997: 269) calls ‘the standard in- terpretation,’ there is not supposed to be any connection at all between the two. Michael Dummett held, in his ‘What is a Theory of Meaning?’, rst published in 1975, that the puzzle can be formulated in terms of any ‘atomic statement’ (Dum- mett 1993: 24, 86).
