HABITAT MANAGEMENT PLAN Green Bay and Gravel Island
HABITAT MANAGEMENT PLAN Green Bay and Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuges October 2017 Habitat Management Plans provide long-term guidance for management decisions; set forth goals, objectives, and strategies needed to accomplish refuge purposes; and, identify the Fish and Wildlife Service’s best estimate of future needs. These plans detail program planning levels that are sometimes substantially above current budget allocations and as such, are primarily for Service strategic planning and program prioritization purposes. The plans do not constitute a commitment for staffing increases, operational and maintenance increases, or funding for future land acquisition. The National Wildlife Refuge System, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is the world's premier system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife, and plants. Since the designation of the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the System has grown to encompass more than 150 million acres, 556 national wildlife refuges and other units of the Refuge System, plus 38 wetland management districts. Habitat Management Plan for Green Bay and Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuges EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This Habitat Management Plan (HMP) provides vision and specific guidance on enhancing and managing habitat for the resources of concern (ROC) at the refuge. The contributions of the refuge to ecosystem- and landscape-scale wildlife and biodiversity conservation, specifically migratory waterfowl, are incorporated into this HMP. The HMP is intended to provide habitat management direction for the next 15 years. The HMP is also needed to ensure that the refuge continues to conserve habitat for migratory birds in the context of climate change, which affects all units of the National Wildlife Refuge System. -

Ludwig,and I havebanded 60,000 downy young Herring Gulls (Larusarqentatus) in coloniesin LakesHuron, Michigan, and Superior.I havegrouped the coloniesaccording to geographical locationin sevenareas (See Table 1). From thesecolonies as of July1961 we have recovered 47 adults(See Tables 2, 3, and4 for eachrecovery) which were banded as chicks.All of theseadults werein full adult plumage,and I have assumedthat they were breedingin thecolonies where we found them. Frequency and Distribution of Polygyny in Great Lakes Herring Gulls in 1978
Condor, 82:426-429 @ The Cooper Ornithological Society 1980 FREQUENCY AND DISTRIBUTION OF POLYGYNY IN GREAT LAKES HERRING GULLS IN 1978 GARY W. SHUGART ABSTRACT.-Polygynous mating in Herring Gulls has been found only in northern Great Lakes breeding colonies. In 1978, I censused 21 colonies in northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron to provide a baseline from which to gauge any future changes in the distribution and frequency of polygyny. Among 10,740 nests, I found 33 (0.3%) double-nests. Double-nests are two contiguous nest cups that contain eggs and are attended by one male and two females. I also found 30 (0.3%) nests with more than four eggs. These nests usually are attended by only two females (female associations). Polygynous groups and female associations were concentrated in northeastern Lake Mich- igan. The simultaneous occurrence of polygyny and female associations in Great Lakes Herring Gulls differs from the situation in other gull species in which only female associations have been described. PREFACE TO 1974 EDITION The seven years since Death’s Door’s publication could hardly have flowed past without washing up a few more facts and insights. We suggest to the reader of this new edition that he glance at pages 29 through 32 before beginning the book. This will permit him to blend the new material with the original text. A simple fact may be of interest: Practically all known marine disasters laid at Death’s Door have been suffered in attempting to pass through the strait (chiefly in the days of sailing ships), while most local hardships and losses — and even the well-known legend itself — are concerned with attempts to cross the notorious passage. And although the Door’s threat has gradually diminished in the wake of technological progress, these waters still work their influence dn daily life in this vicinity. Those who live upon — and those who visit — the islands of Town of Washington can hardly be unaware even today of timeless Porte des Morts’ disturbing presence. -
