Director of Public Health's Annual Report Looks at the Challenges Ahead
Team Update Issue 74 November 2010 www.nhshighland.scot.nhs.uk Director of Public Health’s Annual Report looks at the challenges ahead Alcohol misuse, smoking and obesity are major public health challenges facing NHS Highland, according to the first annual report from its Director of Public Health. Dr Margaret Somerville’s report also highlights the increasing number of older people in the local population and the corresponding increase in the number of people living with long- term conditions, such as hypertension, depression, asthma, coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer. And it looks at lessons learned from last year’s influenza pandemic and explains that a major challenge for the future will be preparing and planning for climate change. Dr Somerville, (pictured top right) who took up the post in February of this year, points out that the health service, along with the rest of the public sector, still has to deal with these issues at a time when their budget is under increasing pressure. She said: “This report reflects my own observations about the health of people in NHS Highland in my first few months in post and the major challenges that lie ahead if we are to continue improving health and closing the gap between the best and worst off in society. “With the prospect of real cuts in spending on health over the next few years, it is more important than ever that we do not lose sight of the long-term health improvement work through which we hope to contain and reduce health service use and cost.” Dr Somerville explained that the population of NHS Highland had increased by more than 5% over the last 10 years and was predicted to increase by a further 10% over the next 20 years, with the number of people aged over 75 more than doubling in the same period. -

NHS Highland Board November 2019 Item 6 CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND DIRECTORS REPORT – EMERGING ISSUES AND UPDATES Report by Iain Stewart, Chief Executive The Board is asked to: • Note the updates provided in the report. Introduction from CEO The engagement strategy which is helping to shape the ‘Culture Fit for the Future’ has been moving ahead. Fiona Hogg will be giving a detailed update on our progress with our Culture Programme later in the agenda. I am pleased with the progress which is being made, it’s a long-term piece of work which needs careful research and planning to make sure we understand the problems we need to address. There are some key milestones being achieved and presented at this Board meeting. A governance structure is in place and our revised plans are ready to be agreed and rolled out. Many of the actions planned have been shaped by our ongoing engagement with the Board and with our colleagues across North Highland and Argyll & Bute and I’m delighted that our impending review in Argyll & Bute is going to provide further valuable insights and information. In terms of the cost improvement programme, we continue to make good progress, with the current level of identified opportunities valued at £29M which when adjusted for the likelihood of delivery reduces to £22M. Of particular note is that 80% of the forecast savings are recurrent so the savings gain will benefit future financial years. Workstreams are ensuring the remaining plans in this financial year are approved, that ideas are progressed to plans and that changes already implemented go on to deliver the expected savings. -

Rosskeen Parish Church of Scotland SCO 10093 Rosskeen is a small but active church in the middle of Alness about 20 miles north of Inverness. Since becoming vacant we have been very fortunate to have the services of the Rev Carol Rattenbury, an O.L.M. who is also our Interim Moderator. Carol is pictured here with some of our weekly collections for HomeStart and Highland Foodbank 1 Rosskeen Parish Church of Scotland SCO 10093 Like many churches we have struggled with falling numbers in our Sunday school so recently our committed team of leaders launched a new initiative. The “J-Team” The children meet in our hall at 11am and then come into the church for the last ten minutes of the service to tell us what they have been doing. They may still be few in number but they are having a great time and the congregation really enjoy hearing from them at the end of the service. 2 Rosskeen Parish Church of Scotland SCO 10093 Another initiative with young people has been to start having Messy Church. This is on the first Sunday of the month and is held at 3pm in the big hall. People are warmly invited to join the fun crafting, singing and snacking and find out in a different way about Jesus Sometimes it is really messy This initiative has been very popular and we have had up to twenty children plus adults on a Sunday afternoon with many of the children having no previous church connection. 3 Rosskeen Parish Church of Scotland SCO 10093 Mums and Toddlers For a long time now we have successfully run a Mums and Toddlers group which meets in the church halls once a fortnight on a Tuesday morning at 10am. -

Team Update Issue 71 August 2010 www.nhshighland.scot.nhs.uk New Admissions Lounge at Raigmore Hospital THE cancellation of twelve operations has been avoided within the first 10 days of the opening of the new admissions lounge at Raigmore Hospital. It is on the first floor, near theatres and allows most patients to be admitted on the day of their planned surgery. This will save most patients having to spend the night in hospital before their operation. The lounge is staffed by trained nurses who prepare patients for their operation and after care. A member of the surgical team also speaks to the patient before their operation. An important part of the service is the contacting of patients two days before they are due to be admitted to go through some pre-hospital checks and answer any questions. Within days of opening this had identified 12 operations which wouldn’t have taken place under the previous arrangements. The potential cancellations were for a variety of reasons that were overcome. Two patients were no longer available and their theatre slots were given to other patients. Business Transformation Manager Linda Kirkland told the Raigmore Hospital Governance Commit- tee meeting it was already improving patient care and making the service more efficient: “Theatre time is expensive and avoiding 12 cancellations means we’re cutting out waste. Staff are also ensur- ing patients are supported during an anxious time.” The Admissions Lounge staff also help support patients with preparations for going home. Jean Martin, Nurse in Charge of the Admissions Lounge, said: “We want to make the process of coming into hospital as smooth as possible for patients but also to plan for their discharge. -

Professor Angus Watson won the Innovation Award for his work in research, development and innovation and Lesley Blaikie, won the Nurse Award for her work to support people living with cystic fibrosis at the Scottish Health Awards in No- vember. Specialist pharmacists Liz Buist and Rebecca McLelland’s poster about the pilot to improve the wellbeing of patients with mental health issues in remote and rural practices won the Service Development Category at the College of Mental Health’s International Conference. The Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service team at Osprey House, Inverness were awarded an HQA for improving access for patient’s drug and alcohol support. Raigmore Hospital’s domestic services team also won an HQA for demonstrating their willingness for going ‘above and beyond’ to support patients, especially earlier this year after the clostridium difficile outbreak, the ‘Beast from the East’ the flu outbreak, and significant issues in the hospital’s theatres. -
