Report of Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry Regarding Alleged Disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Shri Subrata Bose (Nephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose): Mr. Chairman, Sir I thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to speak on this motion moved under Rule 193. Sir, at the outset, I would like to point out to you and all the hon. Members that this is a matter of 60 years old. If one has to understand the issue properly, one has to tell the tale of the last 60 years. In all humility, before I begin, I crave the indulgence of you, Mr. Chairman, Sir, the hon. Minister of Home Affairs, the hon. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the hon. Members to speak at length on this subject. I shall certainly not repeat what my previous speaker, the hon. Shri Probodh Panda, has said. I thank him for initiating this discussion. But I will have to give a little background. When in the first week of August, 1945 the Second World War in the Asian Theatre came to a close after atom bombs were hurled over Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan resulting in the surrender of Japan, Netaji’s Azad Hind Fauz had also to accept defeat. They were two alternatives before Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at that time. There were two alternative courses of action. One was to surrender to the Anglo-American Forces, and the second was to go to another country, seek asylum and continue to involve himself in the struggle for the freedom of our country.

  • Badal Sircar
Badal Sircar Scripting a Movement Shayoni Mitra The ultimate answer [...] is not for a city group to prepare plays for and about the working people. The working people—the factory workers, the peasants, the landless laborers—will have to make and perform their own plays. [...] This process of course, can become widespread only when the socio-economic movement for emancipation of the working class has also spread widely. When that happens the Third Theatre (in the context I have used it) will no longer have a separate function, but will merge with a transformed First Theatre. —Badal Sircar, 23 November 1981 (1982:58) It is impossible to discuss the history of modern Indian theatre and not en- counter the name of Badal Sircar. Yet one seldom hears his current work talked of in the present. How is it that one of the greatest names, associated with an exemplary body of dramatic work, gets so easily lost in a haze of present-day ignorance? While much of his previous work is reverentially can- onized, his present contributions are less well known and seldom acknowl- edged. It was this slippage I set out to examine. I expected to find an ailing man reminiscing of past glories. I was warned that I might find a cynical per- son, an incorrigible skeptic weary of the world. Instead, I encountered an in- domitable spirit walking along his life path looking resolutely ahead. A kind old man who drew me a map to his house and saved tea for me in a thermos. A theatre person extraordinaire recounting his latest workshop in Laos, devis- ing how to return as soon as possible.

  • An Indian Pilgrim an Unfinished Autobiography and Collected Letters 1897-1921
AN UNFINISHED AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND COLLECTED LETTERS 1897-1921 S SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE Subhas Chandra Bose is increasingly becoming a subject of study and research in academic and political circles in India and abroad. It has been felt, however, that although much is now known of the later and the more spectacular events of his life, materials relating to the preparatory period of his boyhood and youth have been ra¬ ther inadequate. This is a book that fills this lacuna in considerable mea- , sure. The Netaji Research Bureau has combined in this work the authori¬ tative version of Bose’s unfinished autobiography with a most fascinating collection of letters of his boyhood, adolescence and youth. This, therefore, is certainly the book with which to begin a study of the socio-cultura' environment of Netaji’s origin and th background of his early mental and in¬ tellectual development. What is more, this work will contribute in no small measure to an understanding of the social milieu at the turn of the nine¬ teenth century which produced a gal¬ axy of outstanding men in the Netaji Bose wrote the early part of his life during a short vacation in. Europe in 1937 immediately prior to his election as President of the Indian National Congress. Although incom¬ plete and covering only the first twenty- five years of his life, it is a most valuable piece of writing for a number of rea¬ sons. It provides a real insight into the influences—religious, cultural j intellectual and political—that shaped, and moulded the personality andj character of the man who now defiant- (continued on 2nd flap.

INDIAN TRAVEL NARRATIVES: NEW PERSPECTIVES Himadri Lahiri Netaji Subhas Open University [email protected] Received: 30-01-2021 Accepted: 02-02-2021 The study of travel narratives as a genre has received a boost with the emergence of new disciplines like Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies and Postcolonial Studies. These cross-disciplinary fields trace in travel accounts not only a picture of contemporary society but also micro-narratives of agency and reverse gaze. While well-known travelogues written during the colonial period by men and women from the West usually project the imperial eyes, those of travellers from the East to the West reveal worldviews altogether different. The gaze of women looking at unfamiliar spaces obviously follows variant trajectories. The travel narratives of racially or ethnically marginalized individuals have more complex patterns. A diachronic study of travelogues would reveal distinct changes in material conditions of travel and attitudes of travellers. Advent of modernity, growing secularization of the travel as a process and consumerisation of the tourist sector have made travelling more comfortable but at the same time have robbed it of the old, pristine charms. The book under review displays some of these trends. Indian Travel Narratives: New Perspectives offers multiple perspectives by covering accounts of varied travel experiences of the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Set in both India and abroad, the travelogues in this volume speak of the unique experiences of men and women.

  • A Non Linear Multifractal Study to Illustrate the Evolution of Tagore Songs Over a Century
A NON LINEAR MULTIFRACTAL STUDY TO ILLUSTRATE THE EVOLUTION OF TAGORE SONGS OVER A CENTURY Shankha Sanyal*1,2, Archi Banerjee1,2, Tarit Guhathakurata1, Ranjan Sengupta1 and Dipak Ghosh1 1Sir C.V. Raman Centre for Physics and Music, 2Department of Physics Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] ABSTRACT: The works of Rabindranath Tagore have been sung by various artistes over generations spanning over almost 100 years. there are few songs which were popular in the early years and have been able to retain their popularity over the years while some others have faded away. In this study we look to find cues for the singing style of these songs which have kept them alive for all these years. For this we took 3 min clip of four Tagore songs which have been sung by five generation of artistes over 100 years and analyze them with the help of latest nonlinear techniques Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA). The multifractal spectral width is a manifestation of the inherent complexity of the signal and may prove to be an important parameter to identify the singing style of particular generation of singers and how this style varies over different generations. The results are discussed in detail. Keywords: Rabindrasangeet, Evolution, Hurst Exponent, MFDFA, Multifractal spectral width INTRODUCTION: The great visionary from Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore once said “Whatever fate may be in store in the judgment of the future for my poems, my stories and my plays, I know for certain that the Bengali race must accept my songs, they must all sing my songs in every Bengali home, in the fields and by the rivers..
