I don’t believe the religion of Islam or Christianity condones acts of terror –nothing is wrong with the religions. Many of these crimes were committed by people who never should have been able to purchase a gun in the first place. A B The executive actions proposed by President Obama will work to decrease violence in Milwaukee neighborhoods and communities across the country.” The White House also put sellers on notice that the administration planned to strengthen enforcement — including deploying 230 new examiners the FBI will hire to process background checks. To lend a personal face to the issue, the White House assembled a cross- section of Americans whose lives were altered by the nation’s most searing recent gun tragedies, including former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and relatives of victims from shootings at Charleston, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Mark Barden, whose son was shot to death along with 19 other children at a Connecticut elementary school in 2012, introduced the president with a dec- laration that “we are better than this.” Invoking the words of Martin Luther King Jr., Obama said, “We need to feel the fierce urgency of now.” Sen. Harris Dodd calls on Committee Chair to hold hearings after President

Obama’sMADISON- In response toExecutive President Obama's recent executive Order actions con- cerning gun violence, Senator Nikiya Harris Dodd (D-Milwaukee) today sent a letter to Senator Van Wanggaard (R-Racine), Chair of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, asking him to hold a public hearing on Senate Bill 159 (SB 159) which would require background checks on the sale of all firearms in the state. "Every week, families across my district grieve the deaths of their loved ones," Senator Harris Dodd stated in the letter. "Our state and our nation have been shaken throughout 2015 by deadly acts of gun violence." In 2015, the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission has so far recorded 145 homicides in Milwaukee, with many deaths still being under investiga- tion. Over 80% of those homicides were firearms-related. Senator Harris D Dodd introduced a number of proposals in 2015, including SB 159, in an ef- C fort to combat the growing violence across the city. Senator Harris Dodd's letter explained, "We must be willing to have tough conversations about the use of deadly weapons if we are going to begin to address gun violence in Wisconsin." Outside of her work on legislation to combat gun violence, Senator Harris Dodd annually hosts Unite Milwaukee, an anti-violence summit aimed at con- necting community members of all ages to the resources they need to combat violence in their neighborhood. The 2016 summit is scheduled to be held this upcoming April. MPS families invited to
