La plupart des œuvres présentées quittent pour la première fois l’atelier new- yorkais de l’artiste. Et pour la première fois, elles vont permettre au public de saisir son mode de travail foisonnant et rigoureux : entre son esquisse préparatoire et l’œuvre définitive, Spiegelman exécute souvent quatre ou cinq études successives qu’il synthétise ensuite. Surtout, l’exposition juxtapose la face publique – les couvertures provocantes du New Yorker, par exemple – et la face secrète – les carnets de croquis – de cet artiste complet et complexe. Peu d’auteurs savent comme Spiegelman devenir en même temps narrateur et sujet de leurs récits : À l’ombre des tours mortes, vision personnelle d’un 11 septembre vécu aux RELATIONS PRESSE premières loges, en est le meilleur exemple. Par un légitime retour aux sources, il participe aujourd’hui, comme auteur et collaborateur, à la collection de livres pour enfants Toon Books, lancée par Françoise Mouly. Toutes ces dimensions du travail d’Art Spiegel- man sont représentées dans l’exposition. Exceptionnellement, un certain nombre des pièces exposées seront disponibles à la vente ainsi qu’un porte-folio publié par la galerie Martel et les éditions Squadro comprenant cinq sérigraphies numérotées et signées à cent exemplaires. Après Alberto Breccia, Milton Glaser et Art Spiegelman, elle ouvrira ses portes à Tomi Ungerer (exposition prévue en septembre-octobre 2009). This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

    NACAE National Association of Comics Art Educators English 100-v: Writing about Comics From the wild assertions of Unbreakable and the sudden popularity of films adapted from comics (not just Spider-Man or Daredevil, but Ghost World and From Hell), to the abrupt appearance of Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman all over The New Yorker, interesting claims are now being made about the value of comics and comic books. Are they the visible articulation of some unconscious knowledge or desire -- No, probably not. Are they the new literature of the twenty-first century -- Possibly, possibly... This course offers a reading survey of the best comics of the past twenty years (sometimes called “graphic novels”), and supplies the skills for reading comics critically in terms not only of what they say (which is easy) but of how they say it (which takes some thinking). More importantly than the fact that comics will be touching off all of our conversations, however, this is a course in writing critically: in building an argument, in gathering and organizing literary evidence, and in capturing and retaining the reader's interest (and your own). Don't assume this will be easy, just because we're reading comics. We'll be working hard this semester, doing a lot of reading and plenty of writing. The good news is that it should all be interesting. The texts are all really good books, though you may find you don't like them all equally well. The essays, too, will be guided by your own interest in the texts, and by the end of the course you'll be exploring the unmapped territory of literary comics on your own, following your own nose.

In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus— which por- trayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controver- sial content. He believes that in our post-literate culture the im- portance of the comic is on the rise, for “comics echo the way the brain works. People think in iconographic images, not in holograms, and people think in bursts of language, not in para- graphs.” Having rejected his parents’ aspirations for him to become a dentist, Art Spiegelman studied cartooning in high school and began drawing professionally at age 16. He went on to study art and philosophy at Harpur College before becoming part of the underground comix subculture of the 60s and 70s. As creative consultant for Topps Bubble Gum Co. from 1965-1987, Spie- gelman created Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids and other novelty items, and taught history and aesthetics of comics at the School for Visual Arts in New York from 1979-1986.

    Literature Compass 12/10 (2015): 509–516, 10.1111/lic3.12263 Spiegelman Studies Part 2 of 2: Breakdowns, No Towers and the Rest of the Canon Philip Smith* Loughborough University Abstract Art Spiegelman is one of the most-discussed creators in Comic Book Studies. His Pulitzer-winning work Maus (1980 and 1991) was, alongside The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and Watchmen (1987), the catalyst to a sea change in the commercial and critical fortunes of the alternative comic book during the mid-1980s. It has been a landmark text in critical discourse on comics ever since. The purpose of this and its companion paper is to offer a synthesis and reinvestigation of both the existing critical literature on Spiegelman as well as, perhaps most importantly, the lacunae within that literature. The aims of these two papers, then, are two-fold: firstly, to establish where we have got to and, secondly, to suggest some directions for the fu- ture of Spiegelman scholarship. The first paper concerned Maus. This, the second of the two, is devoted to In The Shadow of No Towers (2004), Breakdowns (1977 and 2008), and Spiegelman’s other works. Spiegelman’s Maus is, inarguably, one of the most important comics in the history of the medium and has accordingly, as we saw in Part 1 of this survey, attracted a great deal of critical attention. His subsequent works In the Shadow of No Towers (2004) and the reissue of his first collection Breakdowns (originally 1977, reissued in 2008) have generated considerable further interest. Breakdowns is Spiegelman’s first collection of comics.
