Facebook news feeds and Twitter timelines are constantly flooded with photos, videos and articles concerning both local and global issues. UNC Monsoon aims to ride this wave and produce marketable online and print content that brings South Asian voices to the forefront. Prior to Monsoon, UNC Sangam sponsored Diaspora, a campus magazine devoted to South Asian affairs. However, we felt that Diaspora was in need of a rebranding in its mission and name. Monsoon’s mission is to creatively foster dialogue about all eight South Asian countries: Ban- gladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Maldives, Afghanistan, and Bhutan. It seeks to fight both the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of South Asia in mainstream media by producing original content that informs, entertains, and also fosters discussion. The problem UNC Monsoon addresses is the symbolic annihilation of South Asians by the mainstream media.

HOPE SPEECH DETECTION:ACOMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE VOICE OF PEACE A PREPRINT Shriphani Palakodety∗ Ashiqur R. KhudaBukhsh∗ Jaime G. Carbonell Onai Carnegie Mellon University Carnegie Mellon University [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] February 25, 2020 ABSTRACT The recent Pulwama terror attack (February 14, 2019, Pulwama, Kashmir) triggered a chain of es- calating events between India and Pakistan adding another episode to their 70-year-old dispute over Kashmir. The present era of ubiquitious social media has never seen nuclear powers closer to war. In this paper, we analyze this evolving international crisis via a substantial corpus constructed using comments on YouTube videos (921,235 English comments posted by 392,460 users out of 2.04 mil- lion overall comments by 791,289 users on 2,890 videos). Our main contributions in the paper are three-fold. First, we present an observation that polyglot word-embeddings reveal precise and ac- curate language clusters, and subsequently construct a document language-identification technique with negligible annotation requirements. We demonstrate the viability and utility across a variety of data sets involving several low-resource languages. Second, we present an analysis on temporal trends of pro-peace and pro-war intent observing that when tensions between the two nations were at their peak, pro-peace intent in the corpus was at its highest point. Finally, in the context of heated discussions in a politically tense situation where two nations are at the brink of a full-fledged war, we argue the importance of automatic identification of user-generated web content that can diffuse hostility and address this prediction task, dubbed hope-speech detection.

  • Mapping Partition: the Cartographic Construction of Pakistan
Mapping Partition: The Cartographic Construction of Pakistan by Shaheer Tarar A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Department of Geography & Planning, University of Toronto Copyright by Shaheer Tarar, 2020 Mapping Partition: The Cartographic Construction of Pakistan Shaheer Tarar Master of Arts Department of Geography & Planning University of Toronto 2020 Abstract In the summer of 1947, a British barrister who had never before set foot in India used paper maps to sketch out the lines that would lead to its partition. Today, the border he designed is one of the most militarized and surveilled spaces on earth. Thousands of floodlights installed along its perimeter render it visible from space in a bright orange hue, underscoring the power of pencil lines drawn decades ago. In this thesis, I investigate how British and Muslim political interests used cartography to construct, reinforce, and contest ideas of nationhood and statehood during India’s partition; and show how maps can at once be used as tools of colonial intervention and decolonial struggle. ii Acknowledgements Though this thesis was written between me, a computer, and the texts I have cited, so much of it was also shaped by uncitable forces in unknowable capacities. Among them, numerous converging local and global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the global movement against racist policing; my mood and tenor as I wrote amidst widespread discontent and unrest; and my discussions with friends and family which may have felt like they had nothing to do with the topic. In ways I cannot directly point to, the ideas underpinning this work were shaped and sharpened by numerous conversations with my dear friends Ali, Atif, Jandell, Khalood, Mariba and Tucker.

The unity that was witnessed in Partition was responsible for both, the chaos and the calm. The stories taken in this discourse speak of family, homeland and the inevitability of one's belongingness to the greater part, be it family, community and/or religion. Jadein, a story that speaks of homeland adhering to, Benedict Anderson’s concept of Imagined Communities would be analysed through the story. • The United Struggle of 1946
Pakistan Perspectives Vol. 15, No. 1, January-June 2010 Notes The United Struggle of 1946 * Ajeet Javed The history of our freedom movement is the saga of innumerable armed- struggles. One after another, these struggles kept on challenging the British rule in India. However, during and after the Second World War, these struggles acquired a new momentum and new strength. The revolutionary spirit of Indian National Army (INA) had greatly affected the British Indian Armed Forces. Between March 1942 and the beginning of 1946 there were nineteen uprisings in the Royal Indian Navy alone. The most important was the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) revolt of 1946 which paved the way for freedom. The revolt began in Bombay when on 18 February 1946 some ratings at the shore training establishment Talwar refused to eat bad food served to them. They went to the duty officer who was a British to complain about rotten food. Instead of paying any heed to their complaint, the duty officer remarked, ‘Beggars can not be choosers’ and shouted at them ‘you sons of coolies, you sons of Indian bitches’. This attitude and arrogance on the part of the duty officer made the ratings angry and agitated. For years they had been treated like dirt; they had suffered humiliations, hardships and discriminations, but now things were different, their outlook had been transformed. They had fought the Germans, the Italians and the Japanese shoulder to shoulder with Allied forces. Their heroism and gallantry had won them praise of the world. It had increased their self-confidence. Beside this, they had seen with their own eyes the freedom struggle of the peoples of the countries they had helped to liberate from the fascists.
