Welcome to Puerto Varas and the 14th International Congress of Ethnopharmacology and VIII Simposio Internacional de Química de Productos Naturales y sus Aplicaciones The 14th International Congress of the Society for Ethnopharmacology is held for the first time in a Spanish-speaking country from South America. We are holding the meeting in Puerto Varas, a city located in the Provincia de Llanquihue, Region de los Lagos, at the shore of the Llanquihue lake, one of the largest natural lakes in South America. Puerto Varas is a touristic city, well known for its German traditions, food, fish and seafood, natural environment which includes the perfect cone of the Osorno Volcano and the snowcapped peaks of the Volcanos Calbuco and Tronador, clearly visible from the lakefront. Puerto Varas is one of Chilean’s most beautiful cities: a charming convention city full with all the facilities you would expect from a large city, while maintaining the individuality and friendliness of the south of Chile. We have put together an exciting and broad program covering all of the major themes of Ethnopharmacology and Natural Products research, including analytical methods in phytochemical analysis, bioactivity and mechanisms of action of natural and synthetic compounds, bioprospecting, ethnobotany, metabolomics and food plants, nature-based design of bioactive compounds, phytochemistry and chemosystematics, synthesis of bioactive compounds, traditional medicines, among many others. The plenary and keynote lectures constitute a wonderful opportunity for us to hear and interact with world famous speakers. You are encouraged to take advantage of the relaxed and informal tone of this meeting and to engage scientific discussions. The oral program will be complemented by poster sessions given by researchers and students from all over the world. The meeting will also provide a series of workshops designed to provide attendees with an overview of a particular field and also to give insight into focus areas for current development and future directions. Many of the activities at the meeting will be centered on the exhibition area (poster sessions, lunches and coffee breaks) so that you will have several opportunities to view and interact with the exhibitors. The meeting is jointly supported by the International Society of Ethnopharmacology, IRD (France), Sociedad Latinoamericana de Fitoquímica and the División de Química de Productos Naturales, Sociedad Chilena de Química. On behalf of the entire team of 14th ISE Puerto Varas, we welcome you to this exciting event. The International Society of Ethnopharmacology (ISE) is a small, collaborative, interdisciplinary group of scientists – anthropologists, pharmacists, pharmacologists, ethnobotanists, phytochemists, and others – all fascinated by the study of the global use of medicines. The ISE is particularly concerned about understanding the medicinal uses of plants in traditional societies. It seeks to understand the cultural and the pharmacological dimensions of human medicinal plant use everywhere. Since the first congress in 1990, the ISE has the ambition to arrange biannual international congresses for its members and other interested participants. Over the last years the intention has been to hold these congresses alternately on various continents, preferably in collaboration with local societies. W e extend a kind invitation to you to participate in the “15 th International Congress of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology” which will be held on May 5-8, 2015, at the BeitZaman Hotel & Resort, Petra, Jordan. http://15icse.bau.edu.jo/inv.html Page 5 14th International Congress of Ethnopharmacology VIII Simposio Internacional de Química de Productos Naturales y sus Aplicaciones PLENARY SPEAKERS . • Phylogenetic Relationships in the Order Cucurbitales and a New Classification of the Gourd Family (Cucurbitaceae)
Schaefer & Renner • Phylogenetic relationships in Cucurbitales TAXON 60 (1) • February 2011: 122–138 TAXONOMY Phylogenetic relationships in the order Cucurbitales and a new classification of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) Hanno Schaefer1 & Susanne S. Renner2 1 Harvard University, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, 22 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138, U.S.A. 2 University of Munich (LMU), Systematic Botany and Mycology, Menzinger Str. 67, 80638 Munich, Germany Author for correspondence: Hanno Schaefer, [email protected] Abstract We analysed phylogenetic relationships in the order Cucurbitales using 14 DNA regions from the three plant genomes: the mitochondrial nad1 b/c intron and matR gene, the nuclear ribosomal 18S, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, and 28S genes, and the plastid rbcL, matK, ndhF, atpB, trnL, trnL-trnF, rpl20-rps12, trnS-trnG and trnH-psbA genes, spacers, and introns. The dataset includes 664 ingroup species, representating all but two genera and over 25% of the ca. 2600 species in the order. Maximum likelihood analyses yielded mostly congruent topologies for the datasets from the three genomes. Relationships among the eight families of Cucurbitales were: (Apodanthaceae, Anisophylleaceae, (Cucurbitaceae, ((Coriariaceae, Corynocarpaceae), (Tetramelaceae, (Datiscaceae, Begoniaceae))))). Based on these molecular data and morphological data from the literature, we recircumscribe tribes and genera within Cucurbitaceae and present a more natural classification for this family. Our new system comprises 95 genera in 15 tribes, five of them new: Actinostemmateae, Indofevilleeae, Thladiantheae, Momordiceae, and Siraitieae. Formal naming requires 44 new combinations and two new names in Cucurbitaceae. Keywords Cucurbitoideae; Fevilleoideae; nomenclature; nuclear ribosomal ITS; systematics; tribal classification Supplementary Material Figures S1–S5 are available in the free Electronic Supplement to the online version of this article (http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/iapt/tax).

Seasonal dynamics of the shoreline vegetation in the Zapatosa floodplain lake complex, Colombia Udo Schmidt-Mumm* & Georg Janauer Department of Limnology and Oceanography, University of Vienna, Althanstraße 14, A-1090 Vienna, Austria; [email protected], [email protected] * Correspondence Received 29-IX-2013. Corrected 20-I-2014. Accepted 18-II-2014. Abstract: Floodplain lakes and associated wetlands in tropical dry climates are controlled by pronounced and severe seasonal hydrologic fluctuations. We examined the plant community response to a bimodal flooding pattern in the Zapatosa Floodplain Lake Complex (ZFLC), Northern Colombia. We measured floristic and quantitative change in four sampling periods emphasizing seasonal differences in plant abundance and life-form structure. Of 79 species identified in the lake complex, 52 were used to characterize eight community types via classification and ordination procedures. Results showed that community structure does not change signifi- cantly during the flooding/receding stages. But maximum drawdown phase significantly disrupts the aquatic community structure and the exposed shorelines become colonized by ruderal terrestrial plants. Early rainfalls at the beginning of the wet season are emphasized as an important feature of plant regeneration and commu- nity development. The general strategy of the ZFLC vegetation can be framed into the flood pulse concept of river-floodplain systems. Thus, plant communities are mainly responding to disturbances and destruction events imposed by extreme water level fluctuations. Rev. Biol. Trop. 62 (3): 1073-1097. Epub 2014 September 01.
