OUR OPINION ‘Grace’ should be extended in education

hile it’s not surprising the Florida Department of Education has decided to extend “grace” Wto graduating seniors again this year and suspend its demands for standardized testing require- ments, it does open the door for an educated discus- sion on the merits of this system. Last year, there were no standardized testing requirements for graduation and this allowed any student who had not already achieved the state’s approved score on these tests to graduate without any repercussions. The same situation will play out this year. Any student struggling to make a passing score on a test will not have to sweat it. They will graduate anyway this year. The state has allowed each school district to make its own evaluation and extend “grace” to the students who may be struggling. Florida now will have gone two years without state-sanctioned standardized testing, just like “the olden days” of education when students learned what they could consume in class and either passed that material, locally, or didn’t. If classes were passed, stu- dents graduated and went on with their lives, most of the time becoming productive citizens. Deep-seated memories Standardized testing is big business, an indoctrinat- ed thought process for all parties involved and public education’s go-to mantra. Who cares about public notices?

You have the right to know what’s happening in your community. Public notices – information local governments are obligated to provide citizens – are required to be published in local newspapers to provide a public record that’s accessible to everyone.

Public notices keep you informed about your government. But, in some states legislators are trying to keep public notices from appearing in local newspapers. This severely impacts government transparency and, in turn, limits the public’s right to hold them accountable for their actions.

Let your state legislators know that you value being able to access notices in your newspaper and that they are worth the investment.

Protect public notices in newspapers and protect your right to know.
