Albany Institute of History & Art Library MORRIS GERBER PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION 1860-1970s bulk, 1910-1960 23 lin. ft., 47 boxes Series I. Street Views Series II. Subjects Series III. Photo Acquisition of 1983 2002 Biographical Note Morris Gerber was a typesetter at the Albany, NY newspaper, the Times-Union. The collection was assembled by Morris Gerber from the archives of Stephen Schreiber and William Klein, both Albany photographers; discards from the Albany NY newspaper Knickerbocker News morgue and purchases. Photographers in the collection include: Stephen Schreiber; William Klein; Fellowcrafts Studio; Joseph H. Winchell III; Ed Driscoll; Robert Wilder; Roberta Smith; Joe Higgins; Bernie Kolenberg; Ray Joy; Morris Gerber. Scope and Content Note The Morris Gerber Photograph Collection represents a significant documentation of the architectural, social, cultural and economic development of Albany's history from the 1860's into the 1970's, although the bulk of the collection covers the 1910's through the 1950's. Views include building interiors and exteriors, action photos (such as fires, floods, parades, and building construction), urban and suburban residences and businesses. The collection provides researchers with photographic documentation of a wide variety of public and private spheres of human activity in Albany ranging from city sponsored parades to life in a suburban home. Concentrated mostly in the second quarter of the 20th century, the images depict the growth of some of the more "suburban" neighborhoods in Albany (such as Pine Hills) and the flourishing and decline of certain types of businesses. The Morris Gerber Photograph Collection provides a valuable record of streetscapes and facades that have been altered or have vanished over the years. The collection contains: approximately 12,500 black and white 8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photographic prints approximately 600 8 x 10 in. glass plate negatives approximately 3,400 black and white 8 x 10 in. film negatives approximately 13,000 black and white 4 x 5 in. film negatives (unprocessed) Many of the photographs were used in publications so they have annotations, crop marks and retouching; condition varies widely due to their former lives; some images are poorly exposed or focused. Duplicates exist. This finding aid covers only the photographic prints. The 8 x 10 negatives have been processed and foldered but not described here. The 4 x 5 in. negatives are unprocessed. The Morris Gerber Photograph Collection holds 969 folders, each of which contain approximately 15 photos. An additional 370 prints – mostly 8 x 10 in – that Mr. Gerber delivered to the Library subsequent to the initial processing are contained as Gerber Supplement, and follow the catalogue for the main collection. Series I, STREET VIEWS, is contained in 266 folders, or about one-quarter of the collection. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by street name. Order within the folders generally follows a pattern of starting addresses (low numbers) to end of the street; this applies especially to the larger streets ie., Broadway, North Pearl, and State Streets. Street views are defined as images of streets (at street level), intersections, street repair, crowds, sidewalk activity, storefronts, buildings, homes, realty photos, and businesses. A business photo will be included in the appropriate street address folder unless it is accompanied by ten or more related photos; then it qualifies for its own folder under the business name. Photographs of unidentified streets can be found in Box 44. Series II contains images filed by SUBJECT categories. There are 703 folders in the series that make up seventy-five percent of the 8 x 10 collection. The subject categories are listed and stored in alphabetical order. Sub-headings within the individual subject categories (such as Churches - St. Peter's) will generally be listed and stored in alphabetical order. A very small portion of this collection contains images of towns and villages outside of Albany. Any images outside of Albany will be housed in a folder with its town or village name. These folders are created for groups of ten or more images from a single town or village, otherwise, they are placed in folders under the heading, "Outside Albany." Series III holds prints purchased from Mr. Gerber in 1983. Series I.
