Contrastes Una evidencia queer: trabajo sexual y metodologías afectivas Juana María Rodríguez University of California, Berkeley [email protected] RESUMEN: Este artículo investiga dos libros que combinan fotografía con testimonios biográficos para documentar un albergue para trabajadoras sexuales de la tercera edad en Ciudad de México, Casa Xochiquetzal. La yuxtaposición de biografía y fotografía suscita nuevos interrogantes en nuestra investigación sobre la representación de la subjetividad sexual y las prácticas interpretativas que desplegamos para investigarlas. Este artículo se plantea los modos en que diferentes formas de documentación biográfica problematizan productivamente nuestros encuentros con las representaciones estéticas de la sexualidad; y cómo la presencia corporal del sujeto complica sus testimonios vitales. Este proyecto responde con la propuesta de una metodología queer que descompone las evidencias para valorar lo afectivo como un modo de enlazar con la alteridad. A Queer Evidence: Sex Work and Affective Methodologies ABSTRACT: This article considers two books that combine photography with biographical accounts to document a home for elderly sex workers in Mexico City, La Casa Xochiquetzal. Juxtaposing biographical narrative with visual forms raises new questions for our investiga- tions of sexual subjectivities and the interpretive practices we call upon to investigate them. This project asks, how do different forms of biographical documentation productively trouble our encounters with the aesthetic representations of sexuality? How does the corporeal presence of the subject complicate testimonies of their lives? This project responds by proposing a queer methodology that undoes what functions as evidence in order to valorize the affective as a mode of engaging alterity. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles History, Locality, and Art Worlds: A Case Study of the Center for the Arts at San Agustín Etla (CASA), Oaxaca, México A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by María del Carmen Cebreros Urzaiz 2019 © Copyright by María del Carmen Cebreros Urzaiz 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION History, Locality, and Art Worlds: A Case Study of the Center for the Arts at San Agustín Etla (CASA), Oaxaca, México by María del Carmen Cebreros Urzaiz Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor David Delgado Shorter, Chair This interdisciplinary case study portrays the Center for the Arts at San Agustín Etla (CASA). CASA constitutes a micro-universe—a system in scale—dedicated to art production, art education and professionalization, art display, and development of audiences. Established in the restored building of a Porfirian textile industry, in a semi-rural municipality in the central valleys of Oaxaca in Southern México, the center inaugurated in 2006. CASA results from private and public efforts galvanized by the artist Francisco Toledo (1940-2019), who campaigned to recuperate and restore the mill for public uses. In this center, negotiations of cultural, symbolic, artistic, and aesthetic values happen regularly. Such deliberations engage national and international cultural producers, artistic forms, and traditions, as well as the local population, the environment, and the history of the site. ii This dissertation argues that the dynamism stimulated by the foundation of the Center for the Arts at San Agustín plays an active mediating function in the configuration of a heterogeneous culture in which divergent lifeways coincide and coalesce without attempting to resolve or be reduced to a singular one. -

I am the Senior Fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy, a nonprofit 5 organization based in Houston, Texas, working to improve the lives of maltreated and 6 traumatized children by establishing practices, programs, and policies. I am also 7 adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the 8 Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. 9 2. I was an undergraduate at Stanford University and Amherst College. I 10 attended medical and graduate school at Northwestern University, receiving M.D. and 11 Ph.D. degrees in 1984. I completed a residency in general psychiatry at Yale 12 University School of Medicine and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 13 at the University of Chicago. My curriculum vitae is attached as Appendix A hereto. 14 3. I was on the faculty of the Departments of Pharmacology and Psychiatry 15 at the University of Chicago School of Medicine from 1988 to 1991. From 1992 to 16 2001, I served as the Trammell Research Professor of Child Psychiatry at Baylor 17 College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. During that time, I was also Chief of 18 Psychiatry for Texas’s Children’s Hospital and Vice-Chairman for Research within 19 the Department of Psychiatry. From 2001 to 2003, I served as the Medical Director 20 for Provincial Programs in Children’s Mental Health for the Alberta Mental Health 21 Board. -

It is a linguistic mode where rules are broken and foundations are shaken, where reality twists and changes its shape, where metaphors startle and confound us. Looking at the work of Southern Cone writers Delmira Agustini (1886-1914), Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972) and Marosa di Giorgio (1932-2004), this dissertation explores the ways in which poetry becomes a discourse of resistance. I argue that these writers, though traditionally considered apolitical, have created a discourse that is actually politically charged. Drawing extensively on literary theorist Maurice Blanchot’s The Space of Literature, I argue that all three poets seek contact with a “space of knowledge” of an ultimate reality, refusing to abandon their quest even as it proves unrealizable. Through this search, all three poets subsequently create a “space of resistance” that subverts the epistemic structures of their social context. Whether or not these authors intended for their work to make a political statement lies ii beyond the scope of this investigation and, in my view, has little bearing on the outcome. -

Professor Mariano Siskind Lotte Bernarda Buiting Abstract Echoes of the Child in Latin American Literature and Film This dissertation explores the rhetoric of childhood to comprehend how Latin American literature and film signify childhood. It furthermore analyzes the figure of the child as a rhetorical device in the construction of literary and cinematographic meaning in twentieth and twenty-first century poetry, narrative prose and film. I claim that, contrary to prevailing cultural notions of childhood innocence, the child often constitutes an unsettling presence, signaling textual as well as extradiegetic opacities and tensions. -

PRINCE CLAUS AWARDS 2018 2 FOREWORD: UNDER THE PRINCE CLAUS SPOTLIGHT by HRH Prince Constantijn Honorary Chairman of the Prince Claus Fund Every year the Prince Claus Awards Committee comes up with another selection of outstanding artists and cultural organisations. It never fails: the range and diversity is always impressive. Each year we are filled with admi ration for all the creative people who come up with fresh ideas, different approaches, new combinations and forms of expression. Again, the Laureates this year are enriching lives and challenging fixed ideas in their own societies, from Adong Judith, whose plays energise theatre goers in East Africa, to Eka Kurniawan, whose literature mercilessly but with humour raises issues that Indonesia has long kept buried, to Marwa alSabouni, whose architectural perspectives open the possibility of building more peaceable communities, to Kidlat Tahimik, whose energetic creativity and promotion of indigenous people in the Philippines never fails to delight, and O Menelick Act 2 and Market Photo Workshop that – through their different mediums – have given expression to rarely seen realities of black life in South Africa and Brazil. One change in this year’s celebration is the addition of a Next Generation Award. The Prince Claus Fund has always been open to young and emerging artists but this new award reflects a more conscious emphasis, in all the Fund’s programmes, on developing the creative possibilities of young people. Dada Masilo, the Fund’s first Next Generation Laureate, started young and already has a remarkable career. She has broken through conventions and created her own melding of African dance and classical ballet that is relevant to modern life and speaks to audiences of all ages. -
