Sculpture, painting, architecture and crafts will be analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective, for what they reveal about the religion, mythology, history, politics and social context of the periods in which they were created. Student Learning Outcomes Students will learn to recognize and identify all monuments on the syllabus, and to contextualize and interpret art as the product of specific historical, political, social and economic circumstances. Students will understand the general characteristics of each historical or stylistic period, and the differences and similarities between cultures and periods. The paper assignment will develop students’ skills in visual analysis, critical thinking and written communication. This is an Explorations course in the Humanities and Fine Arts. Completing this course will help you to do the following in greater depth: 1) analyze written, visual, or performed texts in the humanities and fine arts with sensitivity to their diverse cultural contexts and historical moments; 2) describe various aesthetic and other value systems and the ways they are communicated across time and cultures; 3) identify issues in the humanities that have personal and global relevance; 4) demonstrate the ability to approach complex problems and ask complex questions drawing upon knowledge of the humanities. To find evidence for this ideal and how it was regarded at the time, in this study a survey is made of woolworking references in the contemporary Augustan poets Vergil, Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. Other extant versions of the Lucretia legend do not mention woolworking; Livy appears to have added Lucretia’s devotion to wool, a tradition in keeping with Augustan propaganda.

Jeffrey Collins Anyone who doubts that a society’s art market reveals its underlying values need only consider the case of Inigo Philbrick, the high-flying young dealer who sold investors overlapping shares of the same blue-chip contemporary works and who was recently apprehended in Vanuatu. The present volume boasts no one quite so colourful, though it too concerns a moment in which the business side of art acquired new prominence. Based on an international congress held at Rome’s Palazzo Barberini, the anthology’s ten chapters consider diverse facets of art’s production, circulation, and recirculation in early modern Rome, unfortunately not all centred on the time and place announced in the title. This is a limitation in a study of art markets, which are typically localized and responsive to shifting conditions. While less focused than one would wish, the collection nonetheless illuminates a key phase in the market’s development while contextualizing our own age of glossy magazines, glamorous fairs, ‘specullectors’, and illicit trafficking of cultural property. Both symposium and anthology reflect the efforts of Paolo Coen, professor of the history of art at the Università degli Studi di Teramo, to bring to Rome something of the economic perspective long established in studies of the seventeenth-century Netherlands.

    Livy’s Early History of Rome: The Horatii & Curiatii (Book 1.24-26) Mary Sarah Schmidt University of Georgia Summer Institute 2016 [1] The Horatii and Curiatii This project is meant to highlight the story of the Horatii and Curiatii in Rome’s early history as told by Livy. It is intended for use with a Latin class that has learned the majority of their Latin grammar and has knowledge of Rome’s history surrounding Julius Caesar, the civil wars, and the rise of Augustus. The Latin text may be used alone or with the English text of preceding chapters in order to introduce and/or review the early history of Rome. This project can be used in many ways. It may be an opportunity to introduce a new Latin author to students or as a supplement to a history unit. The Latin text may be used on its own with an historical introduction provided by the instructor or the students may read and study the events leading up to the battle of the Horatii and Curiatii as told by Livy. Ideally, the students will read the preceding chapters, noting Livy’s intention of highlighting historical figures whose actions merit imitation or avoidance. This will allow students to develop an understanding of what, according to Livy and his contemporaries, constituted a morally good or bad Roman. Upon reaching the story of the Horatii and Curiatii, not only will students gain practice and understanding of Livy’s Latin literary style, but they will also be faced with the morally confusing Horatius.

You will need to have your wiki page completed for me to check by the date above. 3. Include your sources, properly formatted [MLA style], at the bottom of your wiki page. You will need to read Livy’s “ab urbe condita” [“From The Founding of the City”] in translation to get the best parts of the story.
