PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER

March 8, 2019 We’re celebrating BIG this week, Vikings! As you have probably heard by now, our beloved math teacher, Mr. Greg Murach, has been awarded 2019 HOWARD COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR!!!! Dr. Martirano surprised Mr. Murach yesterday, and we had a celebration for him in the Media Center with many of his students, his family, staff members, and community members. This is such an incredible honor for both Mr. Murach and our school, and I still get emotional just thinking about it. The selection process for Teacher of the Year is very competitive and includes a multi-part application, classroom observation, initial interview and second interview with Dr. Martirano. On behalf of Mr. Murach, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the efforts of our remarkable PTSA President, Ms. Bodziak, and Ms. Nolan, both of whom were instrumental in reviewing and revising multiple iterations of our application. Ms. Brittany Gutierrez, our math ITL, wrote a beautiful letter of support, as did countless students, staff and community members. And over and over, I heard the same message, “This was an easy letter to write because Mr. Murach is so deserving.” I couldn’t agree more, so allow me to share a few excerpts from my own letter of support: It is an honor to recommend Mr. Greg Murach for Teacher of the Year. Mr. Murach is a hardworking, caring teacher, a natural leader amongst peers, and is dedicated to serving others in and beyond the classroom. He is a role model teacher, sponsor and mentor at Mt. Hebron High School, a majority- minority school with an economically and culturally diverse student population. Not only does he work hard, he attacks every task with excellence. Mr. Murach is brilliant, creative, exudes warmth, compassion and understanding. His peers and teachers highly respect him. We are fortunate to have Mr. Murach as a mathematics teacher at Mt. Hebron High School. Mr. Murach is all about students, and he continually pursues instructional practices and strategies to engage all learners in his classroom. He developed a co-taught ESOL Algebra I class, integrating native languages and math. Multiple students facing challenges such as interrupted education, cultural transitions, language barriers, and socio-economic instability attained passing PARCC scores due to his creative teaching methodology. He is involved in many facets of Mt. Hebron High School that have a positive impact on our students, staff and the community. His initiative and drive enables our clubs and organizations to be successful, thrive, and establish traditions at our school. Mr. Murach, a leader by nature, inspires his peers to become involved. His character and values are evident in everything he is involved in at school and in the community. He takes pride in everything he attempts; he makes intelligent decisions; he is determined to do his best; and his effort and energy are boundless. This win for Mr. Murach is truly a win for all of us: our students, our staff, and our community! Congratulations, Mr. Murach! We’re so lucky you’re a Viking! Joelle

Pi Week for Mental Health Awareness is Next Week, March 11-15 Pi Week for Mental Health Awareness is Next Week, March 11-15

Get ready to celebrate the number Pi, 3.1415…! What is Pi beside the kind you eat? Pi is one of the most revered constants of our mathematical world which represents the ratio of the circumference to the diameter for any circle. Pi Day is March 14 and is so important that we are celebrating a whole week, March 11-15!

Just like Pi is important to the Math world, so is our mental health. Over 47,000 Americans died by suicide in 2017. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds. At any given time, 1 in 5 Americans is struggling with a mental health issue. 1 in 6 high school students have seriously contemplated suicide.

Pi Week will include educational presentations by professionals in the field of Mental Health and fun activities designed to reduce stress. We will also be having Pi A Teacher Contest. For $1, a student can purchase a ticket and specify a teacher’s name they want to throw a pie in their face (gently). When they purchase a ticket, they will get a pass to the event. The Pie A Teacher contest will occur the following week, during Viking Time on March 20 in the gym. For the teacher to be pied, ticket will be randomly drawn and the students whose name is on the ticket will get to throw the pie in their face! The three teachers with the most tickets will be pied, and two students will be selected for each teacher. Only students with a pass will be able to attend the Pie A Teacher Contest on March 20. All proceeds will be put towards the Pi Week initiative.

During Pi Week, optional donations of $3.14 or more will be collected and donated to Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Howard County's 24-hour crisis center and homeless shelter. Our goal is to raise $2,400 or more to buy a day of support at Grassroots. Donations can be made in cash or check made payable to “”.

The Pi Day Buy-A-Day campaign is happening across Howard County as many HCPSS middle and high schools raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention to buy a day of support at Grassroots. Please support Pi Day Buy-A-Day. Support Life!

Elevator Keys – Health Room Throughout the school year many injuries occur. Because the elevators require a key for use, students are issued a temporary key if they are on crutches, in a wheel chair or a boot. Unfortunately, some of the students have not promptly returned the keys even though they have been released from the doctor. If you have a child who was issued an elevator key and no longer needs it, please check with them to make sure that the key is returned to the health room. The health room is almost out of keys.

ATTN: Current and Former MTH Band Students We are looking for any MTH band instruments that might be lying around your house. It seems that several instruments have been borrowed over the years and not returned to the band program upon graduation or leaving the program. If you have an instrument that belongs to Mt. Hebron, please kindly return the instrument to the front office or directly to Mr. Fischer in the Band Room. No questions asked. Thanks for your assistance as we work together to ensure the success of the band program for years to come.

Do you play a Woodwind, Brass or Percussion instrument? If YES, I have just the thing for you… JOIN BAND! I wanted to reach out and let you know how excited I am to be joining the Mt. Hebron community as the new Band Director. I know that for many of you, band was once an important part of your daily schedule, and I am reaching out to encourage you to consider joining band again. The Mt. Hebron Band Program has a storied history that dates back to 1964 when the band first performed as an integral part of the Mt. Hebron Community. I am looking forward to building on the tradition of excellence that has become the cornerstone of the program.

I recognize that there are many reasons why students choose not to participate in band in high school. I respect that band may no longer be a top priority or even an interest, however I want you to know that I would love to speak with you to discuss ways that you might enjoy band in high school. You can find me in the band room before school or during lunch (4A). There is a place for everyone in our band family. So… If you currently play, used to play or wish you could play an instrument, stop by to see me or feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]. I look forward to meeting you and building an even greater band program together.
