F ASHION LIFESTYLE ART ENTERTAINMENT July/August 2011 FREE Summer Skiing in Argentina Kenneth Choi joins Captain America Dubai Heats Up San Francisco’s Cool Treats The Zine Scene in Las Vegas yellowmags.com FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF It has been so hot and dry for so long, it almost feels like there has only been one season this year—summer! It is the perfect setting for our July/August issue in which our focus is on all things HOT. Of course, hot relates to more than temperature and spiciness—it includes a vast variety of things for which there is high demand, even if those things just happen to be cold. Along those lines, we have included coverage of snow skiing in Argentina in the summer. Why wait for winter in Vail or Aspen when you can easily escape to the mountains of Argentina, right now? If you want a break from the heat that is a lot closer to home even though it does not offer skiing, you can experience what some have famously described as the coldest winter they ever spent in the summer in San Francisco. But if your strategy is to go somewhere hotter than it is here in Houston so that when you return it will feel cooler by comparison, we suggest Dubai where the average temperature this time of year is in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Even there, you can seek refuge within the confines of the luxuriously cool oasis of the new five star waterfront resort, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. It is on a scale all its own. We have highlighted some items that will make you look hot and feel hot and others that will make you look cool and feel cool. We clue you in on the healthful benefits of a variety of teas beyond what has been reported exhaustively about green tea. We inform you of a supplement that has been described as a sunscreen in pill form. Kenneth Choi has a new best friend in July and his name is Captain America. And sometime towards the end of the year he continues the good fight but this time against the North Koreans in the remake of Red Dawn. You may recognize Photo by Collin Kelly Kenneth but not be exactly sure from where. That may be because he has appeared almost everywhere…Glee, Hawthorne, 24, Samurai Girl and in dozens and dozens of other series and films. He offers hope for anyone thinking about getting into acting and moving to L.A. to pursue their dreams of stardom. In his first week in L.A., Kenneth was signed to appear in an independent film. In his first year, he appeared in six television series. It just goes to show you, that it can be done. In fairness, Kenneth says he was “very, very lucky”. So good luck to all of you as you pursue your passion and your dreams. V. Hoang The color yellow has played a recurrent symbolic role throughout the history of Asian culture. It symbolizes the earth that sustains all life, yet has been embraced by Buddhist monks as an expression of unchallenged power. Such is the role of yellow: always revered but in different ways under different circumstances. The mission of Yellow Magazine is to introduce our readers to the artistic , fashion, lifestyle and entertainment contributions made by Asian Americans. It is our hope that the depth and breadth of the topics and events we cover do justice to the pride that the color yellow has represented throughout the millennia.
