Summer Skiing in Argentina Kenneth Choi joins Dubai Heats Up San Francisco’s Cool Treats The Zine Scene in Las Vegas

yellowmags.com FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF

It has been so hot and dry for so long, it almost feels like there has only been one season this year—summer! It is the perfect setting for our July/August issue in which our focus is on all things HOT. Of course, hot relates to more than temperature and spiciness—it includes a vast variety of things for which there is high demand, even if those things just happen to be cold. Along those lines, we have included coverage of snow skiing in Argentina in the summer. Why wait for winter in Vail or Aspen when you can easily escape to the mountains of Argentina, right now?

If you want a break from the heat that is a lot closer to home even though it does not offer skiing, you can experience what some have famously described as the coldest winter they ever spent in the summer in San Francisco. But if your strategy is to go somewhere hotter than it is here in Houston so that when you return it will feel cooler by comparison, we suggest Dubai where the average temperature this time of year is in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Even there, you can seek refuge within the confines of the luxuriously cool oasis of the new five star waterfront resort, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. It is on a scale all its own.

We have highlighted some items that will make you look hot and feel hot and others that will make you look cool and feel cool. We clue you in on the healthful benefits of a variety of teas beyond what has been reported exhaustively about green tea. We inform you of a supplement that has been described as a sunscreen in pill form.

Kenneth Choi has a new best friend in July and his name is Captain America. And sometime towards the end of the year he continues the good fight but this time against the North Koreans in the remake of Red Dawn. You may recognize Photo by Collin Kelly Kenneth but not be exactly sure from where. That may be because he has appeared almost everywhere…Glee, Hawthorne, 24, Samurai Girl and in dozens and dozens of other series and films. He offers hope for anyone thinking about getting into acting and moving to L.A. to pursue their dreams of stardom. In his first week in L.A., Kenneth was signed to appear in an independent film. In his first year, he appeared in six television series. It just goes to show you, that it can be done. In fairness, Kenneth says he was “very, very lucky”. So good luck to all of you as you pursue your passion and your dreams.

V. Hoang The color yellow has played a recurrent symbolic role throughout the history of Asian culture. It symbolizes the earth that sustains all life, yet has been embraced by Buddhist monks as an expression of unchallenged power. Such is the role of yellow: always revered but in different ways under different circumstances. The mission of Yellow Magazine is to introduce our readers to the artistic , fashion, lifestyle and entertainment contributions made by Asian Americans. It is our hope that the depth and breadth of the topics and events we cover do justice to the pride that the color yellow has represented throughout the millennia. As the editor in chief of Yellow Magazine, my last name is Hoang, which also means yellow. Just as I am proud of my name, I am proud of my heritage, and proud of Yellow Magazine.

TRAVEL Cool Off This Summer in San Francisco The Signs Say... by LEO SIPRAS

Mark Twain never actually wrote “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer

But the highlight of any meal here is the “Best Damn Crab Cioppino”, a bowl heaping with squid, clams, shrimp, mussels and more. Make sure you are hungry, or bring a friend to share. The interior of the restaurant is intimate and casual, or you can sit at sidewalk seating out front and practice your Italian.

Street Festivals Practically every weekend there’s a festival of some sort going on in one of San Francisco’s unique neighborhoods. Enjoying street festivals is a great way to learn more about a city and the people who live there, and can also be an affordable way to eat a lot of food. For example, the creatively inspired Noodle Fest is a “Cultural and Culinary Celebration” that takes place where Chinatown and the Italian North Beach areas meet. Held in May, festival goers can sample delicious noodle and pasta dishes and drinks from over thirty restaurants in the area, while also enjoying live music and cultural exhibits. other “teas.” Of course, the Asian community has enjoyed those teas for centuries.

The various types of tea (Camellia Sinensis) are categorized by the manner of their

processing and consist of green, black, white, yellow, and oolong varieties. Below

are samplings of these teas that are available in various forms.

Green tea leaves are slightly dried and then baked or roasted. An exception is Sencha, which is steamed and dried. This tea is characterized by a grassy flavor and has little caffeine. The health benefits of green tea are considered to include positive effects in the treatment of cancer, heart and cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, infection and tooth decay. Green tea contains epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant which is considered the source of its healthful properties. Black tea leaves thoroughly ferment while they are exposed to air for a specific period of time during which the leaves darken to a copper color. The flavor is complex and full bodied and it has the highest level of caffeine. Research indicates that black tea aids in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Oolong tea leaves are prepared in a manner that shares similarities with green and black teas. It has a rich flavor and pleasant lasting aftertaste. The level of caffeine is in between green and black teas. Oolongs increase metabolism, aid digestion and weight loss and ease the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. White tea is grown exclusively in China. It is slightly fermented in a manner that gives it different health properties than the other teas.
