Dramaserien 9-1-1 med Angela Bassett, Peter Krause och Connie Britton premiär på FOX tisdag den 20 mars kl 21.55. 2018-03-09 14:31 CET Action- och drama i premiäravsnittet av 9-1-1 med Angela Bassett i en av huvudrollerna Det tar ett team av människor för att svara på den berömda frågan ”Vad är din nödsituation” och i serien 9-1-1 är det en återkommande fras. I den kritikerrosade dramaserien 9-1-1 med premiär på FOX den 20 mars är det poliser, brandmän, sjukvårdare, ambulanspersonal och larmoperatörer som står i centrum. Varje dag hanterar de pressade, stressade och utsatta situationer, ofta med risk för sina egna liv. Men att kombinera sitt krävande och tuffa arbete, som många gånger handlar om att rädda liv, samtidigt som de ska hantera sina privata problem och åtaganden är inte alltid det lättaste. I centrum av 9-1-1 står polisen Athena (Angela Bassett), brandmannen Bobby (Peter Krause) och larmoperatören Abby (Connie Britton). Athena är polis i Los Angeles och gift med Michael, tillsammans har de två barn. Athena ställs dagligen inför svåra fall som kräver hennes skarpa sinne och expertis, samtidigt som hon försöker jonglera sitt eget familjedrama. Bobby är brandman och utför dagligen räddningsaktioner som ofta innebär livshotande situationer. Även Bobby har ett familjedrama bakom sig som ledde till år av alkohol- och drogmissbruk som han försöker ta sig ur. Abby ägnar alla sina arbetsdagar åt att svara på nödsamtal och vill alltid veta vad som händer personerna efter att hon skickat hjälp. Samtidigt tyngs hennes samvete av att inte ha tillräckligt med tid för och med sin alzheimersjuka mamma. Redan i premiäravsnittet av 9-1-1 blir det som utlovat mycket drama då man försöker lokalisera barnskrik från en vägg samt rädda en kvinna från att bli kvävd av sin orm. Men mellan allt drama finns det även plats för mycket humor och komiska situationer. Och så fort en situation blir löst kommer nya nödsamtal och däremellan har huvudpersonerna egna personliga problem att konfrontera. Det finns ingen vila för dessa modiga hjältar. Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.
