A Genetic Context for Understanding the Trigonometric Functions Daniel E. Otero∗ July 22, 2019 Trigonometry is concerned with the measurements of angles about a central point (or of arcs of circles centered at that point) and quantities, geometrical and otherwise, that depend on the sizes of such angles (or the lengths of the corresponding arcs). It is one of those subjects that has become a standard part of the toolbox of every scientist and applied mathematician. It is the goal of this project to impart to students some of the story of where and how its central ideas first emerged, in an attempt to provide context for a modern study of this mathematical theory. -

Preface Due perhaps to a recognition of the wide applicability of their elementary concepts and techniques, both combinatorics and linear algebra have gained increased representation in college mathematics curricula in recent decades. The combinatorial nature of the determinant expansion (and the related difficulty in teaching it) may hint at the plausibility of some link between the two areas. A more profound connection, the use of determinants in combinatorial enumeration goes back at least to the work of Kirchhoff in the middle of the 19th century on counting spanning trees in an electrical network. It is much less known, however, that quite apart from the theory of determinants, the elements of the theory of linear spaces has found striking applications to the theory of families of finite sets. With a mere knowledge of the concept of linear independence, unexpected connections can be made between algebra and combinatorics, thus greatly enhancing the impact of each subject on the student's perception of beauty and sense of coherence in mathematics. If these adjectives seem inflated, the reader is kindly invited to open the first chapter of the book, read the first page to the point where the first result is stated (\No more than 32 clubs can be formed in Oddtown"), and try to prove it before reading on. (The effect would, of course, be magnified if the title of this volume did not give away where to look for clues.) What we have said so far may suggest that the best place to present this material is a mathematics enhancement program for motivated high school students. -

Appendix 1 Letter from Descartes to Desargues 1 (19 June 1639) Sir, The openness I have observed in your temperament, and my obligations to you, invite me to write to you freely what I can conjecture of the Treatise on Conic Sections, of which the R[everend] F[ather] M[ersenne] sent me the Draft. 2 You may have two designs, which are very good and very praiseworthy, but which do not both require the same course of action. One is to write for the learned, and to instruct them about some new properties of conics with which they are not yet familiar; the other is to write for people who are interested but not learned, and make this subject, which until now has been understood by very few people, but which is nevertheless very useful for Perspective, Architecture etc., accessible to the common people and easily understood by anyone who studies it from your book. If you have the first of these designs, it does not seem to me that you have any need to use new terms: for the learned, being already accustomed to the terms used by Apollonius, will not easily exchange them for others, even better ones, and thus your terms will only have the effect of making your proofs more difficult for them and discourage them from reading them. If you have the second design, your terms, being French, and showing wit and elegance in their invention, will certainly be better received than those of the Ancients by people who have no preconceived ideas; and they might even serve to attract some people to read your work, as they read works on Heraldry, Hunting, Architecture etc., without any wish to become hunters or architects but only to learn to talk about them correctly. -

The methods are so novel and the results so easily reached that they cannot fail to awaken enthusiasm. Our work as editors in this revision has been confined to some slight modifications of the proofs, some additions in the way of references, and the insertion of a considerable number of half-tone reproductions of actual photographs instead of the line-drawings of the original. Kaleidoscopic Symmetries and Self-Similarity of Integral Apollonian Gaskets Indubala I Satija Department of Physics, George Mason University , Fairfax, VA 22030, USA (Dated: April 28, 2021) Abstract We describe various kaleidoscopic and self-similar aspects of the integral Apollonian gaskets - fractals consisting of close packing of circles with integer curvatures. Self-similar recursive structure of the whole gasket is shown to be encoded in transformations that forms the modular group SL(2;Z). The asymptotic scalings of curvatures of the circles are given by a special set of quadratic irrationals with continued fraction [n + 1 : 1; n] - that is a set of irrationals with period-2 continued fraction consisting of 1 and another integer n. Belonging to the class n = 2, there exists a nested set of self-similar kaleidoscopic patterns that exhibit three-fold symmetry. Furthermore, the even n hierarchy is found to mimic the recursive structure of the tree that generates all Pythagorean triplets arXiv:2104.13198v1 [math.GM] 21 Apr 2021 1 Integral Apollonian gaskets(IAG)[1] such as those shown in figure (1) consist of close packing of circles of integer curvatures (reciprocal of the radii), where every circle is tangent to three others. These are fractals where the whole gasket is like a kaleidoscope reflected again and again through an infinite collection of curved mirrors that encodes fascinating geometrical and number theoretical concepts[2]. The central themes of this paper are the kaleidoscopic and self-similar recursive properties described within the framework of Mobius¨ transformations that maps circles to circles[3]. Can One Design a Geometry Engine? on the (Un) Decidability of Affine

Makowsky Received: June 4, 2018/ Accepted: date Abstract We survey the status of decidabilty of the consequence relation in various ax- iomatizations of Euclidean geometry. We draw attention to a widely overlooked result by Martin Ziegler from 1980, which proves Tarski’s conjecture on the undecidability of finitely axiomatizable theories of fields. We elaborate on how to use Ziegler’s theorem to show that the consequence relations for the first order theory of the Hilbert plane and the Euclidean plane are undecidable. As new results we add: (A) The first order consequence relations for Wu’s orthogonal and metric geometries (Wen- Ts¨un Wu, 1984), and for the axiomatization of Origami geometry (J. Justin 1986, H. Huzita 1991) are undecidable. It was already known that the universal theory of Hilbert planes and Wu’s orthogonal geom- etry is decidable. We show here using elementary model theoretic tools that (B) the universal first order consequences of any geometric theory T of Pappian planes which is consistent with the analytic geometry of the reals is decidable. The techniques used were all known to experts in mathematical logic and geometry in the past but no detailed proofs are easily accessible for practitioners of symbolic computation or automated theorem proving. Pure Mathematics
Why Study Mathematics? Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that help us understand the world around us. Now much more than arithmetic and geometry, mathematics today is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurements, and observations from science; with inference, deduction, and proof; and with mathematical models of natural phenomena, of human behavior, and social systems. The process of "doing" mathematics is far more than just calculation or deduction; it involves observation of patterns, testing of conjectures, and estimation of results. As a practical matter, mathematics is a science of pattern and order. Its domain is not molecules or cells, but numbers, chance, form, algorithms, and change. As a science of abstract objects, mathematics relies on logic rather than on observation as its standard of truth, yet employs observation, simulation, and even experimentation as means of discovering truth. The special role of mathematics in education is a consequence of its universal applicability. The results of mathematics--theorems and theories--are both significant and useful; the best results are also elegant and deep. Through its theorems, mathematics offers science both a foundation of truth and a standard of certainty. In addition to theorems and theories, mathematics offers distinctive modes of thought which are both versatile and powerful, including modeling, abstraction, optimization, logical analysis, inference from data, and use of symbols. Mathematics, as a major intellectual tradition, is a subject appreciated as much for its beauty as for its power. The enduring qualities of such abstract concepts as symmetry, proof, and change have been developed through 3,000 years of intellectual effort. Like language, religion, and music, mathematics is a universal part of human culture. -
Strophoids, a Family of Cubic Curves with Remarkable Properties
Hellmuth STACHEL STROPHOIDS, A FAMILY OF CUBIC CURVES WITH REMARKABLE PROPERTIES Abstract: Strophoids are circular cubic curves which have a node with orthogonal tangents. These rational curves are characterized by a series or properties, and they show up as locus of points at various geometric problems in the Euclidean plane: Strophoids are pedal curves of parabolas if the corresponding pole lies on the parabola’s directrix, and they are inverse to equilateral hyperbolas. Strophoids are focal curves of particular pencils of conics. Moreover, the locus of points where tangents through a given point contact the conics of a confocal family is a strophoid. In descriptive geometry, strophoids appear as perspective views of particular curves of intersection, e.g., of Viviani’s curve. Bricard’s flexible octahedra of type 3 admit two flat poses; and here, after fixing two opposite vertices, strophoids are the locus for the four remaining vertices. In plane kinematics they are the circle-point curves, i.e., the locus of points whose trajectories have instantaneously a stationary curvature. Moreover, they are projections of the spherical and hyperbolic analogues. For any given triangle ABC, the equicevian cubics are strophoids, i.e., the locus of points for which two of the three cevians have the same lengths. On each strophoid there is a symmetric relation of points, so-called ‘associated’ points, with a series of properties: The lines connecting associated points P and P’ are tangent of the negative pedal curve. Tangents at associated points intersect at a point which again lies on the cubic. For all pairs (P, P’) of associated points, the midpoints lie on a line through the node N.
