Megan Thee Stallion) (Explicit) Daniel Dumile, MF DOOM, lived a thousand lives and his career was a succession of false starts and bright flashes. Before passing away on the 31st of October, 2020, Dumile had been a young virtuoso rapper welcomed with open arms by the music industry, then an outcast that sneaked back onto the scene through the back door after years of wandering (now masked), the 'go-to-guy' of independent rap during the 2000s and then some kind of Indie messiah as dubbed by Thom Yorke and Flying Lotus. Elusive, whimsical, a trickster and a money maker, DOOM rewrote the rules of rap music, rubbed people up the wrong way and paved the way for a whole generation of MCs. A combination of Jamaican dancehall, American hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and Spanish wit, reggaeton has, since its birth in the early 90s, shaken the world of pop music time and time again. From DJ Playero’s first mixtapes to Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” and Don Chezina’s “Tra- Tra-Tra, Puerto Rican musicians and their Colombian counterparts in Medellin have done their utmost to take over the world. In the last decade, they have done just that thanks to artists such as Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. Read on for 10 of the genre’s most important albums. Reggaeton won’t be going anywhere any time soon. At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence. Moosh and Twist - Growing Pains. It wasn’t all that long ago that DeQuincy “Moosh” Coleman McRae and Oliver “Twist” Feighan were Haverford High School kids matching up beats with their rhymes and envisioning one day when they’d be rocking massive crowds with their party-positive jams. In just about five years, OCD: Moosh & Twist has grown from being an after school hobby of two dudes who have been friends since sixth grade to becoming their legit careers. They’ve put out a string of well-received mixtapes – The Welcome Mat in 2011, The Vestibule in 2012, and Back to the Basement in 2013 – and last year dropped their first official album, Living Out Loud. Continue reading → #Selfies4Ebola: Forbes 30 Under 30 party was fun, and that’s about it. What does “Young Professional” even mean? It’s such a nebulous term that gets bandied about with no concrete definition, and until Sunday night I had never really seen how actually strange the young professional crowd can be. Forbes 30 Under 30 summit is taking over Philadelphia this week, for better or worse, and kicked off Sunday with a one-day music festival at NoLibs social engineering space The Piazza at Schmidts. photo by Jeremy Zimmerman | Jeremy-Zim.com. Local young rap-fessionals OCD Moosh & Twist got the brisk Fall night off to a fun start. Even though it’s fair to say most of the twenty-going- on-fifty-something crowd didn’t know any of their music, it didn’t keep hands from being thrown in the air, and plenty of smiles from showing as the trio bounced its way through a tragically short and sweet opening set. The group has been steadily climbing in popularity over the past year or so, and it’s really great to see them getting on bills like this one, and Made in America earlier this year. You can see all of these big-ticket artists for free this weekend. Some big names in a such small venue, right? Well, the aim of these shows is to involve major artists with intimate concerts to join the movement to end severe poverty by 2030. Gettin’ Real OCD with Moosh & Twist (playing the First Unitarian on 12/29) Friends since childhood, rap duo DeQuincy “Moosh” Coleman McRae and Oliver “Twist” Feighan, better known by their performance name, OCD: Moosh & Twist, continue their rise as one of Philly’s most popular hip-hop acts. The pair have been recording together since they were still in high school–which, surprisingly, was not so long ago, despite their seasoned performance style. Moosh and Twist caught audiences by surprise in 2011 with a fresh perspective on following dreams and keeping cool under pressure with addictive tracks like”Possibilities” and “Take Me Back.” After the explosive success of their debut mixtape, Up Before The World , Moosh and Twist continued recording and started popping up in different venues throughout the area, which landed the pair to a tour with Aer this past summer. In the midst of the chaos preparing for their upcoming headlining tour, we swapped e-mails with Moosh and Twist to get the skinny on how they started, what they’ve got coming up projects and their shared excitement about performing.
