Lee) Archival documents were seen to be important tools for restoring the historical character and geographic integrity of the nation in post-colonial Morocco. In a country where the number of historic manuscripts in private collections are believed to outnumber what is currently held by public libraries and archives, where there is a tendency towards nondisclosure and even the hiding of historic manuscripts in Morocco, the Hassan II Prize for Manuscripts and Archival Documents was began in 1968/9 as a way to gain access to records in private collections. This dissertation sets out understand how the Hassan II Prize elicited approximately 35,000 submissions in the almost fifty years since its inception. Specifically, how did the Hassan II Prize overcome resistance to archival disclosure and negotiated access to private collections with or without the perceived loss of possession by owners; and what motivating factors contributed to manuscript holders submitting their records to the Prize? The Hassan II Prize was studied as an explanatory, qualitative case study using multiple sources of data including 14 semi-structured interviews with submitters to and administrators of the Prize, participant observation of the 2015 Hassan II Prize process, analysis of local periodicals, government and historic documents, as well as of microfilm and digital copies of submitted manuscripts that are stored at the Moroccan National Library (BNRM). iii Interviews identified four main themes related to participation in the Hassan II Prize: national identity and heritage, loss (material and intellectual), religious charity, and prize money. This research seeks to introduce participant narratives, which have been absent from the official documentation of the Prize in favor of the texts of their historic manuscripts and documents, into the archival record. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS “The one who has not thanked people, has not thanked God,” is a traditional saying of the Prophet Muhammad. Over the four weeks of the seminar, participants will learn to recognize and read a broad range of medieval scripts and will receive a detailed in- troduction to the entire process of manuscript production, from the prepa- ration of parchment or paper through the stages of writing, decorating, correcting, and glossing the text to the binding and storage of the com- pleted codex. Medieval conventions of punctuation and abbreviation will receive special attention, as will specific genres of manuscripts, including Bibles, Books of Hours, maps, calendars, and rolls and scrolls. Partici- pants will also learn how to recognize and interpret the types of evidence that can help to establish a manuscript’s origin and provenance; they will receive a grounding in the conventions of manuscript cataloguing and an introduction to the science of textual editing. The seminar will focus on manuscripts written in Latin; a basic knowledge of Latin is therefore a prerequisite. Format The seminar will meet for formal sessions on four mornings of each week, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. During the afternoons, the instructor will make himself available for consultation; he will also hold occasional workshops on specific topics and anticipates that partici- pants may wish to meet regularly for guided group transcription sessions.

Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings.

The skill set, and consequently societal contribution, was historically based on individual talents and not on institutionally, or state, defined professions and job responsibilities. Why did the profession of the imam evolve into a distinctive position, one that includes leading five daily prayers, but also giving occasional mentoring and advising to community members? How did the position become practical and applied? Why did it shift away from being a natural service available in mosques to a position that entailed marrying and divorcing congregants, advising and counseling, youth work, representing and political relationship building among many other things? This chapter explores some of the history of the imam in current Muslim imagination along with more contemporary expressions of the expectation of an imam working in a U.S. mosque today.     Directory of Institutions in the United States and Canada with Pre-1600 Manuscript Holdings The Directory of Institutions is the first part of a continuation of the Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada, published in 1935 and 1937, and its 1962 1 Supplement. The present Directory details, when known, the current location of the collections listed in the original Censusand Supplement, and identifies an additional 281 North American repositories of pre-1600 European manuscripts in Western languages that were not included in the earlier works. For all of the 480 North American repositories, this Directory provides updated contact data and general information on pre-1600 manuscript holdings. Detailed descriptions of individual manuscripts are outside the scope of this Directory, but bibliographical references to published catalogues and internet addresses giving access to on-line cataloguing records are provided when available. Following the organizational scheme of the original Census and Supplement, the Directory entries are organized alphabetically by State and City, with public collections listed first for each city, followed by private. (Due to privacy issues, modern private collections are not included). As in the original publications, the Canadian Provinces are found in a separate listing at the end of the directory. Throughout the Directory, an asterisk (*) is used to indicate those collections listed in the Census and/or Supplement that no longer hold pre-1600 manuscripts or have since changed names. We would like to thank the hundreds of individuals who have contributed to this updated directory through their gathering and sharing of information regarding the whereabouts of pre-1600 manuscripts in North American collections.
