Shaver (Volume 1): 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing collection of true outsider artBy Christian M.My name is Christian Mengele and I'm an artist. Often my art has been classified as "outsider art" and I have not fought that label. However, in my opinion, the true definition of outsider or Art Brut comes from Dubuffet. Only a few American artists -- Ramirez, Darger, Aarning, MacIntosh -- and Shaver, really fit the definition.Artists like Traylor, Hawkins, Dial, Edmondson, and Basquiat are really self taught contemporary. I would classify myself in that same vein. The Outsider label is limiting and most of the dealers are further outside mainstream collectors than the artists themselves. The term Art Brut was coined by Dubuffet and somehow turned to Outsider, which makes sense if you are talking about Darger or Ramirez. Unfortunately, with the Outsider Art Fair in NYC, everything from folk art to self taught contemporary got lumped into the genre. But Richard Sharpe Shaver is the real deal. In this book, we learn a lot about the man and his art. This isn't just a coffee table book with beautiful reproductions, this is a treasure trove of information about this man's processes and history. You will never find a more interesting backstory to any artist.Through an elaborate physical and spiritual process, Shaver would extract from rocks the hidden images etched into them thousands of years ago by the ancient civilisations within the Hollow Earth. He'd fight great scenes of destruction, fighting, harmony, seduction, a universe that constantly grew, gave birth, killed, died and spread out. His rock images breathed, pulsated with lust and greed, domination and submission, insanity and bliss, all deposited there by the ancients, ready to be read like books by those attuned to their vibrations.Expertly edited by Richard Toronto, THE go-to man for anything related to Shaver, this is a must-have for any serious Shaver aficionados as well as outsider art collectors.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Man Bats are Bleeding from the Trees!By Christian M.In my review for Vol. 1 I explained how Richard S. Shaver's amazing Rokfogo would be categorised as outsider art. In this second volume, we are treated with yet more of the phantasmagorical imagery that he liberated from the rocks around his Rock House Studio in Summit, Arkansas. Shaver would find striking beauty, sexuality, horror and infernal damnation within the rocks, and present them in artisanal fashion, through a complex system that one would not expect given his materials. Some of his paintings, it's revealed, were made on cardboard or plywood, often framed with structures hand-made out of whatever he had lying around. The book presents more than just his art, it allows a glimpse into his carefully studied persona. Richard Shaver was a well-read, brilliant man, with an amazingly layered sense of humour.I already owned two out-of-print volumes about Shaver's Rokfogo art, "This Tragic Earth" by William Mott, and "The Secret World", by Ray Palmer. Richard Toronto's book surpasses both in quality and readability, and possibly the final word on Rokfogo from the perspective of an authour who's forever linked to the Shaver Mystery. Another must-have!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Rokfogo rocks!By WMMottRichard Toronto has done a great service to fans of The Shaver Mystery with this first volume of his two- volume work on Shaver's artwork and world view. He has uncovered treasures indeed, and brought them to light in full color for the rest of us. He has approached the subject of Shaver's art and thoughts as a studied examination of an artist, and this is a welcome addition to the few books on the topic. BRAVO, and well done! In 1960, science fiction writer Richard Sharpe Shaver discovered "rock books" on his Wisconsin farm. He concluded they were not just rocks, but intelligently designed documents, the recorded history of an ancient, pre-deluge civilization. For 15 years he decoded the rock book texts and images he found embedded in stone, and soon began painting and photographing what he found. It was an alien world that few other than Shaver could see. Shaver also wrote essays to compliment his paintings. He wrote of the people and customs of Earth's pre-history—the half human, half fish Mermen and women—documenting their daily lives in intimate detail. He left behind a body of work that has languished in obscurity for decades. Richard Toronto has gathered together the largest collection of Shaver's art ever to see print. Presented in two volumes, with more than 300 illustrations, Rokfogo: The Mysterious Pre-Deluge Art of Richard S. Shaver presents the paintings, photographs, and essays that made up Richard Shaver's ante-diluvian cosmology. Now considered an Outsider artist, Shaver was a pulp fiction writer during Amazing Stories' golden era. Shunned by mainstream science fiction fans for his radical ideas, Shaver died in obscurity in 1975, leaving behind his legacy of the "sensual art of the ancients." "The Hidden World of Richard Shaver is, perhaps, not for everyone. It is dark; it is bizarre; it is mad. It is also, for those with eyes to see and with ears to hear, wondrous, thrilling, magical. His stories and his pictures reflect what he heard and what he saw, and they reveal, if not the Hidden World that is underneath our feet and buried in our past, then at least the Hidden World of this remarkably creative man." -- Dr. Gregory Reece, PhD. @ PopMatters.com"As with all else concerning Shaver, the present volumes take us into a mysterious place, not the caves where menacing creatures from the Elder World survive to torment us but the psyche of an endlessly odd man who will not let us forget him. Enter here, if you dare." -- Jerome Clark, The Fortean TimesAbout the AuthorIn 1972 Richard S. Shaver opened a letter from an inquisitive California kid named Richard Toronto. As the story goes, Shaver’s reply changed Toronto’s life forever. For the next four years until Shaver’s death in 1975, Toronto enrolled in Shaver’s rock book correspondence course, where Shaver encouraged him to photograph rocks and become a writer. A few years after Shaver’s death, Toronto founded Shavertron, a fanzine for Shaver Mystery buffs. In time it gathered a cult following, keeping Shaver’s memory alive for 29 issues from 1979 to 1992 as “The Only Source of Post-Deluge Shaverania.” It took another 35 years before Toronto wrote the book that became Shaver’s first published biography: War Over Lemuria. Since its publication in 2013, Toronto's California-based Shavertron Press has produced several ground- breaking new works on Shaver and the Mystery. ROKFOGO, a two-volume set devoted entirely to Shaver's Outsider Art career of painting and photography, was the first of its kind. The Shavertron collection, Toronto says, is his farewell to Shaver, as he plans to gafiate from the Shaver Mystery in 2014. Toronto attended San Francisco and Sacramento State Universities, graduating in 1994 with a BA in Journalism. He worked in the Arts in Mental Health program at Napa State Hospital in Napa, California, where he taught photography to the criminally insane. He also covered the arts and entertainment beat, among others, as a reporter for a suburban daily newspaper in the San Francisco Bay Area. His first magazine article about Richard S. Shaver appeared in Beyond Reality magazine in 1976. In 2002 he converted Shavertron to an E-zine, where it can be found at www.shavertron.com to this day. I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture.

Is there a single intelligent force behind all religious, occult, and UFO phenomena? Strange manifestations have haunted humans since prehistoric times. Beams of light, voices from the heavens, the "little people," gods and devils, ghosts and monsters, and UFOs, have all had a prominent place in our history and legends. In this dark work, John Keel explores these phenomena, and in doing so reveals the shocking truth about our present position and future destiny in the cosmic scheme of things. Are we pawns in a celestial game? In the Orient, there is a story told of the seven towers. These citadels, well hidden from mankind, are occupied by groups of Satanists who are chanting the world to ruin. Perhaps this is just a story; perhaps there is some truth behind it. But what if there is yet another tower, a tower not of good or evil but of infinite power? What if all our destinies are controlled by this cosmic force for its own mysterious purposes? And what if UFOs and other paranormal manifestations are The Eighth Tower: On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum tools being used to manipulate us and guide us toward the The Eighth Tower: On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum role we are fated to play? Fanzines which are not “in motion,” which have no intended deadline for publication, may remain inert in perpetuity. And there is no end to the opposing forces in the way
