    Crunching numbers Are you divided on how to best use Corel® Quattro Pro® X7? Does the mere thought of working with numbers multiply your fears? If so, read on for insights that will add to your productivity and subtract from your worries. Performing simple math To do simple math (such as 2+2 or 3×6) in a cell, create a math formula: 1. Type a plus sign ( + ), followed by the first number (without commas). 2. Type the math operator for the calculation you want to perform: • a plus sign for addition; a minus sign ( - ) for subtraction • an asterisk ( * ) for multiplication; a forward slash ( / ) for division The input line (at top) shows 3.     Quattro Pro 9 vs. Excel 2000 vs. Lotus 123 version 9 vs. Star Office Spreadsheet 9 Preface: I should point out that I do not depend upon the use of spreadsheets for my bread and butter. I teach the basic use of spreadsheets in some of my math classes, and use them to organize data and to do fairly simple operations. I have personal limited uses for spreadsheets. Because the address book in WP 7 was notoriously unstable, I stored my address information in Quattro Pro, which could then be easily exported as a data base and imported into pretty much any address book, including Organizer, Corel’s Address Book in Corel Central, Outlook and Sidekick. When comparing the presentation software of the various suites, I left out Lotus Freelance Graphics, as Lotus is no longer producing this suite. However, Lotus 123 has long be held up as the mother of all spreadsheets and often as the standard; so I had to include their final version in this comparison. I read some superficial reviews on the various suites. Some commented how Lotus 123 was the standard; however, I continued to find it inferior in many ways. The only reason I can see someone using Lotus 123 is that is the spreadsheet that they cut their teeth on. Then, another reviewer mentioned how Excel 2000 showed few improvements over Excel ‘97; however, there were several things which in Excel ‘97 were like pulling teeth to do, which were quite easy to do in Excel 2000. It makes me wonder if these people spend more than an hour with the program before reviewing it or whether they have actually used the program for any reason.

In fact, it may be hard to fathom, but there really was a time when electronic spreadsheets weren’t available. Back then, people relied instead on clumsy mainframes or calculators and spent hours doing what now takes minutes. It all started with VisiCalc The world’s first electronic spreadsheet, VisiCalc, was conjured up by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston back in 1978, when personal computers were pretty much unheard of in the office environment. VisiCalc was written for the Apple II computer, which was an interesting little machine that is something of a toy by today’s standards. (But in its day, the Apple II kept me mesmerized for days at aCOPYRIGHTED time.) VisiCalc essentially laid theMATERIAL foundation for future spreadsheets, and you can still find its row-and-column-based layout and formula syntax in modern spread- sheet products. VisiCalc caught on quickly, and many forward-looking companies purchased the Apple II for the sole purpose of developing their budgets with VisiCalc. Consequently, VisiCalc is often credited for much of the Apple II’s initial success. In the meantime, another class of personal computers was evolving; these PCs ran the CP/M operating system.
