Xbase++ Language Concepts for Newbies Geek Gatherings Roger Donnay Introduction Xbase++ has extended the capabilities of the language beyond what is available in FoxPro and Clipper. For FoxPro developers and Clipper developers who are new to Xbase++, there are new variable types and language concepts that can enhance the programmer's ability to create more powerful and more supportable applications. The flexibility of the Xbase++ language is what makes it possible to create libraries of functions that can be used dynamically across multiple applications. The preprocessor, code blocks, ragged arrays and objects combine to give the programmer the ability to create their own language of commands and functions and all the advantages of a 4th generation language. This session will also show how these language concepts can be employed to create 3rd party add-on products to Xbase++ that will integrate seamlessly into Xbase++ applications. The Xbase++ language in incredibly robust and it could take years to understand most of its capabilities, however when migrating Clipper and FoxPro applications, it is not necessary to know all of this. I have aided many Clipper and FoxPro developers with the migration process over the years and I have found that only a basic introduction to the following concepts are necessary to get off to a great start: * The Xbase++ Project. Creation of EXEs and DLLs. * The compiler, linker and project builder . * Console mode for quick migration of Clipper and Fox 2.6 apps. * INIT and EXIT procedures, DBESYS, APPSYS and MAIN. * The DBE (Database engine) * LOCALS, STATICS, PRIVATE and PUBLIC variables. * STATIC functions.

Crunching numbers Are you divided on how to best use Corel® Quattro Pro® X7? Does the mere thought of working with numbers multiply your fears? If so, read on for insights that will add to your productivity and subtract from your worries. Performing simple math To do simple math (such as 2+2 or 3×6) in a cell, create a math formula: 1. Type a plus sign ( + ), followed by the first number (without commas). 2. Type the math operator for the calculation you want to perform: • a plus sign for addition; a minus sign ( - ) for subtraction • an asterisk ( * ) for multiplication; a forward slash ( / ) for division The input line (at top) shows 3. Type the second number (without commas), and then press Enter to the formula for the selected display the result in the cell. cell, which shows the result. TIP: You can also specify cells (such as G12) or cell ranges (such as H1..H3). Combining math operations You can combine multiple math operations into more complex formulas. The standard mathematical order of operations applies—so multiplication and division are performed before addition and subtraction. If you want to prioritize an operation, you must enclose it (in parentheses): • For example, +5+4*3-2 equates to 15 (that is, 5+12-2). • However, +(5+4)*(3-2) equates to 9 (that is, 9×1). A blue triangle at lower-left indicates that the cell 3 TIP: Specify an exponent (such as 2 ) by using a caret (as in +2^3). contains a formula. Calculating with functions Quattro Pro offers over 500 functions: built-in calculations that you can use within—or instead of—math formulas.

  • Scrivening (.Pdf)
Windows Scrivening Things I’m Martin Rinehart, a professional writer (software how-to) and a newbie novelist who just taught himself to use Scrivener. These are Things I needed to learn to understand Scrivener. I’m jotting these down before I forget what it was like to learn Scrivener. Knowing these Things may flatten your learning curve. At least a little bit. 1 0) Scrivener for Windows Things These instructions are specific to Scrivener for Windows. Got a Mac? Sorry. I don’t. Want a book? Scrivener for Windows cannot be learned from a Scrivener for Mac book. The products are different. 1) Binder Things a) It’s too small. You can’t tell the icons apart. You’ll need to understand those icons when you get to the Compiler. While you’re learning try 18pt type: Tools / Options / Appearance / Fonts,General / Binder / Select_Font / 18 Take that slow. It will make sense. (Nice job hiding it, no?) b) Your Manuscript folder is special. Put your manuscript in it. Front Matter goes in “Front Matter.” Your Manuscript folder may be named “Draft.” You may rename it if you like, but that doesn’t change it’s special relationship to the Compiler. c) The Compiler uses three icons from the Binder: Easy enough to tell folder from the others. Easy enough (far too easy!) to not distinguish text group from text. Note that in the Binder the Folder icon may have a funny little addition. The Compiler doesn’t care: 2 The ‘top text’ (my name) is text that you write directly in the folder.

  • Retrocomputing As Preservation and Remix
Retrocomputing as Preservation and Remix Yuri Takhteyev Quinn DuPont University of Toronto University of Toronto [email protected] [email protected] Abstract This paper looks at the world of retrocomputing, a constellation of largely non-professional practices involving old computing technology. Retrocomputing includes many activities that can be seen as constituting “preservation.” At the same time, it is often transformative, producing assemblages that “remix” fragments from the past with newer elements or joining together historic components that were never combined before. While such “remix” may seem to undermine preservation, it allows for fragments of computing history to be reintegrated into a living, ongoing practice, contributing to preservation in a broader sense. The seemingly unorganized nature of retrocomputing assemblages also provides space for alternative “situated knowledges” and histories of computing, which can sometimes be quite sophisticated. Recognizing such alternative epistemologies paves the way for alternative approaches to preservation. Keywords: retrocomputing, software preservation, remix Recovering #popsource In late March of 2012 Jordan Mechner received a shipment from his father, a box full of old floppies. Among them was a 3.5 inch disk labelled: “Prince of Persia / Source Code (Apple) / ©1989 Jordan Mechner (Original).” Mechner’s announcement of this find on his blog the next day took the world of nerds by storm.1 Prince of Persia, a game that Mechner single-handedly developed in the late 1980s, revolutionized computer games when it came out due to its surprisingly realistic representation of human movement. After being ported to DOS and Apple’s Mac OS in the early 1990s the game sold 2 million copies (Pham, 2001).
