Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists.

Israel is a small nation. She occupies a mere 33,000 square miles, approximately one third the size of Great Britain. The nation of Israel contains less than six million inhabitants. Yet she is almost never out of the mainstream news. A word search on ‘Israel’ on the BBC site alone (in September 2002) yields over 9,000 ‘hits’, whereas a search for ‘Iraq’, arguably one of the most important nations in the Middle East for Britain, yields less than 7,000. Searches for Israel’s other nearest neighbours yield approximately 3,000 for ‘Egypt’, 6,000 for ‘Iran’, 2,000 for ‘Jordan’, 2,000 for ‘Kuwait’, 2,000 for Libya, 3,000 for ‘Saudi Arabia’, 2,000 for ‘Syria’ and 5,000 for Turkey. It is noteworthy that with the exception of Jordan and Libya, all these nations are more heavily populated than Israel, some of them several-fold. Yet given that the additional word ‘Palestinians’ yields almost 8,000 ‘hits’, Israel and her Palestinian problem individually far outstrip any of her neighbours with respect to western (or at least British) interest.

    Astronomical Calculations for The Real Star of Bethlehem While the spectacular astronomical signs in the 18 months from May 3 B.C. to December 2 B.C. would have caused wonderful interpretations by astrologers on behalf of Augustus and the Roman Empire, the Magi decided to go to Jerusalem with gifts to a newborn Jewish king. The Magi focused on Judaea and not Rome at this crucial time in history. Let us look at some of the astrological and biblical factors that may have brought the Magi to Jerusalem and then to Bethlehem. Since the New Testament says the Magi saw the “star” rising in the east, it would most naturally be called a “morning star.” The Book of Revelation has Jesus saying of himself, “I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” 1 The apostle Peter also mentioned that Jesus was symbolically associated with “the day star.” 2 The above verses refer to celestial bodies that were well known and recognized in the 1st century and they inspired symbolic messianic interpretation by early Christians. There were several prophecies in Isaiah which generally were interpreted as referring to the Messiah. One has definite astronomical overtones to it. Isaiah said, “The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” 3 This prophecy could easily refer to the rising of some star. It would be particularly appropriate to a “morning” or “day” star. Luke, in his Gospel, referring to the celestial symbolism of Isaiah 60:3 which spoke of God as being “the daybreak [the rising] from on high that hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness.” 4 Astronomy and the New Testament These references reveal that celestial bodies were symbolically important to the New Testament writers.

    The Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7-8) The so-called Johannine Comma (also called the Comma Johanneum) is a sequence of extra words which appear in 1 John 5:7-8 in some early printed editions of the Greek New Testament. In these editions the verses appear thus (we put backets around the extra words): ὅτι τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες [ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, ὁ Πατήρ, ὁ Λόγος, καὶ τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα· καὶ οὗτοι οἱ τρεῖς ἔν εἰσι. 8 καὶ τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες ἐν τῇ γῇ] τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ τὸ αἷμα, καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν. The King James Version, which was based upon these editions, gives the following translation: For there are three that bear record [in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth], the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. These extra words are generally absent from the Greek manuscripts. In fact, they only appear in the text of four late medieval manuscripts. They seem to have originated as a marginal note added to certain Latin manuscripts during the middle ages, which was eventually incorporated into the text of most of the later Vulgate manuscripts. In the Clementine edition of the Vulgate the verses were printed thus: Quoniam tres sunt, qui testimonium dant [in caelo: Pater, Verbum, et Spiritus Sanctus: et hi tres unum sunt. 8 Et tres sunt, qui testimonium dant in terra:] spiritus, et aqua, et sanguis: et hi tres unum sunt.

Coombes Introduction: The subject of “Mystery Babylon” has fascinated many Bible Prophecy students in the past twenty years or so as questions arise as to the identity of Mystery Babylon. There are many different theories proposed as to the identification, all but two are fairly new. This recent upsurge of different theories has provoked many a debate within internet discussion forums whether they be Christian or secular forums. As a scholarly researcher on the subject since 1987, I have developed a vast treasure house of facts, data points if you will, on the subject of Mystery Babylon and all of its facets, not merely the identity issue. What I have noticed in various online discussion forums by posters making assertions on the subject of Mystery Babylon, is that a lot of myths and errors are stated and repeated over and over, again and again, creating tremendous confusion. In an effort to counter this problem, it seemed appropriate to me to present at least some of the factual inaccuracies and set the record straight What follows is an attempt to list some of the more egregious, factual errors on the subject and present the correct those errors for the record. Myth/Error #1. – The name of “Mystery Babylon” Many people refer to the prophetic passages of Revelation chapters 17 and 18 as referring to a “Mystery Babylon” as if “Mystery” was part of the title name.

The argument of this paper is that certain salient passages in the New Testament concerning Christology, as it was defined in the Nicene creed in A.D. 325, reflect such orthodoxy better in the Textus Receptus Greek texts and the English translations made from them than do the Alexandrian texts. Arian theology, which was condemned as heretical at Nicea, is examined. Patristic quotations, historical texts, and arguments of the scholars are cited and traced, along with a comparison of Christological verses.
