2 On-stage Music Adjudicator Andrew Snell

Andrew Snell was born in Taunton, Somerset, and started playing trombone at the age of 10. After playing with the local town bands and county youth bands and orchestras he moved to Manchester to study at University College, Salford.

After gaining a BA (Hons) in Band Musicianship he was offered the position of Bass Trombone with the world-renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

With Grimethorpe he toured extensively, including , Japan, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Hong Kong, and won the National Brass Band Championships and the British Open Championships. He was involved in the recording of many CDs, radio and television programmes, including the Eurovision Song Contest and the making of the hit film Brassed Off!

Andrew was a finalist in the Young Conductor of the Year competition in 1996 and has conducted bands including Grimethorpe, Yorkshire Imperial and EYMS. Whilst conducting EYMS the band won the North of England Championship and gained a place in the prizes at the prestigious Grand Shield Contest.

Leaving Grimethorpe in 2002, after 11 years as a member, Andrew emigrated to New Zealand where he was engaged as Musical Director with Waitakere City ‘Trusts’ Brass; one of New Zealand’s premiere brass bands, which he directed to become the Champion Band of Australia in 2003. Since leaving NZ for Australia in 2004 he has worked as Lecturer in Brass and Musicianship at Charles Darwin University, Orchestra Manager for the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (Opera Australia) in Sydney and Chief Executive Officer of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. In October 2013 he took up the position of Managing Director of Victorian Opera. Andrew is currently Musical Director of Darebin City Brass - Preston Band, which he conducted to victory in the A Grade of the Victorian State Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

Andrew has a deep commitment to the enrichment of quality of life through performing, teaching and the management of all things musical. He is fiercely passionate about music and music education.

3 Parade of Bands Music Adjudicator Layton Hodgetts OAM. – BA (Mus) Dip. Ed TTC, MACE

Layton recently retired after a distinguished career in music education spanning the past forty years. He has been actively involved in various capacities with the TBL over many years; including being a member of the Music Advisory Board and Chairman and Convenor of the 2010 National Band Championships in Hobart. He received the TBL Badge of Honour in 2015 in recognition of his services to the TBL. Layton is the founding conductor of the Derwent Valley Concert Band who celebrate their 25th Anniversary of formation this year and he currently serves as the Music Director on the Band’s Management Committee. Layton has extensive experience in marching band competition, having led and directed the DVCB successfully on their numerous overseas tours where they have competed and participated in major international marching events. Layton has served on the jury for WAMSB (World Association of Marching Show Bands) at international competitions in Malaysia, China and Europe. He is very pleased to have the opportunity to be a member of the adjudicating team at the 2018 State Band Championships in Hobart.

Parade of Bands Drill Adjudicator David Peters (OAM)

David Peters commenced his banding with the City of Launceston RSL Band (then called the Invermay Silver Band) in 1965 at the age of 10. He was actively involved with that band, both as a player and drum major, until his move to Hobart in 2003 when he joined the Glenorchy City Concert Brass. David has won the Bill Welling Shield for Champion Tasmanian Drum Major in 1995, 1996, 2008, 2013 and 2015. In 2012, he won the National A Grade Champion Drum Major trophy.

David has been drill adjudicator at numerous Tasmanian State tiles as well as several National Band Championships. David was President of the Tasmanian Bands League from 1996 to 2011 and President of the National Band Council of Australia from 2000 to 2003. He has both Life Memberships of the Tasmanian Bands League and the National Band Council of Australia. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2014 for his services to music through the brass band movement.

Parade of Bands Drill Adjudicator Geoff Brown

Geoff Brown joined the Latrobe Federal Band in 1952. During this 54-year association he has played cornet and tenor horn and was Drum Major for 23 years. Geoff’s interest in drill and marching started in the school cadets in 1953, which lead him to being bass drummer of the National Service Drum Band. He was awarded Life Membership of the Latrobe Federal Band in 1972, became a Drill Adjudicator in 2000 and has been a member of the Drill Advisory Board for the past eighteen years. Geoff won the Bill Welling Trophy for Champion Drum Major in 2003 and 2005. In 2004 Geoff received the Champion Drum Major award for C Grade Brass. Geoff retired from the position of Drum Major in 2006 but has continued his involvement in drill and marching as an Adjudicator.

• The TBL sourced and paid for the first year of premiums for all registered TBL Band organisations

Tasmanian Bands League Contest Rules

• The TBL formed a working party to review the contest rules for Tasmanian in light of the Tasmanian context. Changes included: redefining the Junior age U19@ 1st January; increasing the number of permits for brass and concert bands; allowing mixed band ensembles at the TBL Solo and Party

National Band Council of Australia Contest Rules

• The TBL proposed the change in Junior age for the National contest – this was agreed upon and voted in by the NBCA Executive

Visiting Conductors

• Nigel Seaman –Conductor and Musical Advisor of the Cory Band and Teacher of Tuba at the Cardiff Royal College of Music and Drama - Nigel worked with bands in each region • Mark Eager (in association with Launceston College) – Musical Director of the Welsh Symphonia and Cardiff University Orchestra– Mark worked with NW and Northern Bands

TBL Solo and Party

• The TBL ran a successful Solo and Party Championships in May 2018
