Alfredo Jaar Hasselblad Award Winner 2020 Hasselbladstiftelsen Hasselblad Foundation Press Release Alfredo Jaar Gothenburg, March 9, 2020 Hasselblad Award Winner 2020 The Hasselblad Foundation is pleased to announce that Alfredo Jaar is the recipient of the 2020 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for the sum of SEK 1,000,000 (approx. USD 100,000). Alfredo Jaar is the 40th winner of the Hasselblad Award. The award ceremony will take place in Gothen- burg, Sweden, on October 19, 2020. The following day, October 20, an exhibition of Alfredo Jaar’s work will open at the Hasselblad Center. A book about the artist will be published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, with an essay by Jacques Rancière. The Foundation’s citation regarding the Hasselblad Award Laureate 2020, Alfredo Jaar: »Alfredo Jaar explores complex socio-political issues, bringing to the fore the ethics of representation. Through quiet and meditative works, Jaar confronts issues of great magnitude, bearing witness to humanitarian disasters and attesting to the impact of military conflict, political corruption and economic inequality throughout the world. His photographs, films, elaborate installations and community-based projects provocatively disturb common perceptions of reality. Alfredo Jaar Biography Alfredo Jaar was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1956. He studied architecture and filmmaking, graduating from the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura in 1979, and Universidad de Chile, Santiago, in 1981. Jaar emigrated from Chile in 1982, at the height of Pinochet’s military dictatorship. His exhibition at Fundación Telefónica in Chile, Santiago (2006), was his first in his native country in 25 years. Jaar lives and works in New York. Throughout his career, Jaar has addressed contentious themes. The Sound of Silence (1995) is a film installation based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning photo- graph of a starving boy and a vulture taken by South African photojournalist Kevin Carter during the famine in Sudan in 1993. Alfredo Jaar’s installation consists of a space with a wall of fluorescent lights on the outside that blinds the viewer. Inside a film is shown describing Kevin Carter’s photograph and the critical reactions it caused, which culminated in Carter’s suicide. The photograph and its reception pointed to the role and responsibilities of a spectator when faced with human suffering. Jaar’s work masterfully probes central journalistic issues concerning the politics and ethics of images, information and narratives. Searching for Africa in LIFE (1995) focuses on the absence of references to Africa in LIFE magazine. It is a collection of 2,128 chronologically sequenced covers of the magazine from the first issue in 1936 to the last in 1996. Jaar uses a similar strategy in the work titled From TIME to TIME (2006) which again brings to the surface the racism that governs the perception of the African continent in the Global North. Hasselbladstiftelsen Hasselblad Foundation Jaar’s best known long-term work, the seminal Rwanda Project (1994–2000), is a response to the silence, indifference and inaction of the Global North to the events in Rwanda that claimed over one million lives. Through a variety of means, including survivors’ testimonies and pictures, the works reveal the world’s silence in the face of genocide, testing the visitor’s desensitization to images of violence and probing the limited capacity of art to represent tragedy. Alfredo Jaar has made numerous public interventions, such as The Skoghall Konsthall (2000), a one-day art gallery made of paper in the small town of Skoghall, Sweden. The art gallery was set on fire as an attempt to visualize the absence of cultural institutions in the community. Other examples of public interventions are the electronic billboard A Logo for America (1987) and The Cloud (2000), a performance project on both sides of the Mexico-USA border. Alfredo Jaar’s work has been shown extensively around the world. He has partici- pated in the Biennales of Venice (1986, 2007, 2009, 2013), São Paulo (1987, 1989, 2010, 2020) as well as Documenta in Kassel (1987, 2002). Important individual exhibitions include The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1992); Whitechapel, London (1992); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1995); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2005) and Moderna Museet, Stock- holm (1994). Major recent surveys of his work have taken place at Musée des Beaux Arts, Lausanne (2007); Hangar Bicocca, Milan (2008); Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie and Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst e.V., Berlin (2012); Rencontres d’Arles (2013); KIASMA, Helsinki (2014) and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK (2017). The artist has realized more than 70 public interventions around the world. Over 60 monographic publications have been published about his work. He became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow in 2000. He received the Hiroshima Art Prize in 2018. Eggleston focused on an older woman having coffee at the next table, who returns his gaze. A bright stripe on the wall behind her and a nearby neon clock sign also vie for the camera's attention. The sign's message, "Payroll checks cashed free," addresses the diner's working-class patrons—a friendly message in an alienating interior. Diners are ubiquitous places, fixtures of American road culture where inexpensive food can be had quickly. The diner is also an iconic subject of twentieth-century American art; it featured in Edward Hopper's paintings of the 1930s and Robert Frank's photographs in The Americans, published in the 1950s. Eggleston's image extends their theme of lone city-dwellers sitting forlornly in harshly lit © Eggleston Artistic Trust eating establishments, looking as if they are trapped there. Now in its twenty-second year, this highly regarded annual prize, originated by The Photographers’ Gallery and subsequently awarded in collaboration with the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, recognises artists and projects deemed to have made a significant contribution to photography over the previous 12 months in Europe. This year’s nominees survey a vast range of topical issues through the lens and language of photography. Collectively their projects explore state and gender politics, social injustice, human rights and conceptual approaches to image making. An exhibition of the shortlisted projects will be on show at The Photographers’ Gallery from 8 March to 2 June 2019, before touring to Deutsche Börse's headquarters in Eschborn/Frankfurt. On Abortion is a visual research project that draws on the past, present and current history of abortion to highlight the continuing erosion of women’s reproductive rights. For centuries, people have searched for ways to terminate unsafe or unwanted pregnancies. Despite the fact that today safe and efficient means of abortion exist, many women are still forced to resort to ancient, illegal or risky home methods resulting in approximately 47,000 deaths due to failed procedures each year.

    Corrupting Photography Kerry Brougher Joel Sternfeld’s 1979 photograph made in Woodland ,Washington seems at first to be merely a country road sweeping through a rather nondescript landscape. Then you're pulled further in through the images of a parked sheriffs car and bystanders in the road, staring at some kind of activity; there, at the point where the road stripes and telephone lines converge in a demonstration of renaissance perspective, lies a wet grey-brown mass—an elephant that has collapsed on the highway. Seen at a distance, the runaway beast, which could seems so incongruous or even surreal in this context, becomes merely one elements of the overall scene a prospect among many. The landscape, spotted with sheds, weeds, and rather ragged pine trees, seems as drained of energy and miserable as the elephant, it's Edenic beauty spoiled by encroaching development. “Exhausted Renegade Elephant, Woodland, Washington June 1979” first appeared in Joel Sternfeld's landmark photographic book American Prospects. Revealing much about the contemporary landscape in the American psyche both then and now, the 1987 publication depicts an exhausted garden ruins by unchecked growth, where troubling situations are camouflaged as the norm—a place unable to escape the phone circus-like behavior. Throughout the book, America lies collapsed in the middle of the road it cannot stop building. However, as an American photography from Carlton Watkins to Ansel Adams is inextricably bound with the landscape, American Prospects it's a book not just about the countries complex and troubled relationship to nature, but about photography itself. Its publication wasn't part a response to a dilemma facing many photographers in the 1970s who found themselves, like Sternfeld’s elephant, exhausted on a highway looking for a way forward.

We will explore the history of the medium, from 19th century daguerreotypes and wet plate to digital imaging; the relationship between photography and American history, especially in relation to popular culture, social depiction, and war. We will be especially interested in photographic works that attempt to represent the nature of America and American life. A one semester seminar cannot hope to cover all the essential topics concerning American photography, let alone photography in general. That is why the papers you will be writing are essential not only to your own work but to the seminar. Each of you will have c. 20 minutes to introduce the photographer about whom you are writing in the last sessions of the class. These reports will not only be helpful in gleaning suggestions from other members of the class, but will add to the breadth of knowledge begun with the earlier class sessions and readings. In addition to considering how others have photographed American life, students will have the opportunity to make their own photographs. Any camera or cell phone with the capacity to take photographic images will do for equipment.
