MIKA | Les Ardentes 2013*** Recensie: MIKA | Les Ardentes 2013*** Parc Astrid Luik vrijdag 12 juli 2013 foto © Deborah Digneffe Recensie: De popmuziek die MIKA brengt, staat altijd garant voor good vibes en happy feelings. Ook zo op Les Ardentes waar de Libanees-Britse zanger een best of-optreden neerzette en songs uit zijn drie albums liet horen. De man blijft trouw aan zijn concept: het kinderlijke is nooit ver weg. Deze keer koos ie voor witte vlaggetjes, die doen denken aan verjaardagsfeestjes én symbolen zoals hartjes, wolkjes, een M, … zoals uit het spel Memory. Maar of dat concept eeuwig houdbaar blijft, is maar de vraag … Straks wordt Michael Holbrook Penniman, ofwel MIKA, 30. Zes jaar geleden ondertussen al brak hij door met singles Grace Kelly, Relax take it easy en debuutplaat Life In Cartoon Motion. Het ging snel voor de Libanees-Britse zanger, erg snel. En zo snel als het instant succes er voor zijn instant pop kwam, zo snel taande het ook. Gevolg: MIKA ging zich concentreren op die markt waar hij het sterkst stond: Frankrijk met nummers als Karen, L‘amour dans le mauvais temps, Un soleil mal luné en Elle me dit op het jongste album. Gevolg: in Frankrijk haalde het derde full album "The origin of love“ dat bijna een jaar oud is, de eerste stek. Maar in de rest van Europa moest de flamboyante zanger met karakteristieke kopstem en mimiek het met minder, veel minder stellen. Niet voor niets dus dat de zanger zowel op Les Ardentes als enkele weken later op Ronquières Festival staat. MIKA opent met de ballade "Un soleil mal luné“. Thema lijkt de jaren '30. De zanger heeft een bolhoed op, de andere muzikanten bretellen aan. Zeer veel songs start ie alleen of samen met toetsenist Curtis Stansfield. Dat moet uiteraard uitmonden in één van de muzikale hoogtepuntepunten van de avond: een 4 mains met MIKA en Stansfield tijdens "Stuck in the middle“. De zanger spreekt ons in het Nederlands, Frans en Engels aan. En net zoals het verjaardagsfeestje op het podium, zal ook in het publiek rond klokslag 12 een verjaardag gevierd worden. Twee kaarsjes die de nieuwe leeftijd verraden – 30 – halen een tiental vrienden boven. Ook toeters mogen niet ontbreken die soms de muziek overstemmen. Andere jonge tieners proberen zowat elke MIKA-song uit te beelden. Underwater krijgt een hilarische zwem-, vissen, - en verzuipchoreografie mee die ons doen denken aan de eigen jeugd, terwijl er één enkele gloeilamp brandt boven de piano. Het jonge grut amuseert zich kostelijk, terwijl papa's en mama's met hun lagere schoolzoon of -dochter op het gras zitten te kijken naar het grote ledscherm. Heerlijk hoe geconcentreerd een jong meisje – we schatten dat ze 9 was – elke beweging van haar idool volgde. Bij "Relax take it easy“ kruipt ie zoals gewoonlijk op de vleugel om er in een split jump af te springen. "Blue Eyes“ valt op in zijn meerstemmige versie en dialoog op vleugel-en buffetpiano. De saxofonist zet zich op de piano voor "Brown Eyes“, waarbij het publiek meezwaait. MIKA doet een rondvraag wie er al iets gedronken heeft en hoeveel dat dan wel mag zijn. Met "feze is voor alle dronken verliefden“ kondigt ie "Love you when I'm drunk“ aan. Luik en zijn bewoners paaien doet ie een intro voor "Big girl you are beautiful“ start. Bij de titeltrack van het jongste album dansen een drietal tienermeisjes de polonaise en liggen er zelf in een deuk mee. De rest laat de handjes vrolijk mee wapperen wanneer MIKA daarom vraagt. Het hoge entertainmentgehalte moet echter maskeren dat de song té middelmatig is net zoals het banale "Celebrate“. Funky pianospel domineert een heerlijk "Popular song“. Penniman laat een la horen op een lange "mmmm“ dat het publiek overneemt. En jawel hoor, de eerste koppeltjes slowen bij de eerste noten van "Happy ending“, anderen voelen zich "wasted“, en proberen een gevecht te voeren met de zwaartekracht. Na twaalven valt ons op dat de muzikanten de songs beginnen rekken. Een erg snel begin van de show, zorgt ervoor dat ze tijd te veel hebben. Zo wordt "Love Today“ onder andere erg lang uitgesponnen. MIKA start als beatboxer en halfweg blijft de plaat van bassist Max Taylor erg lang hangen. "Als hij dit melodietje hoog mag zingen, is ie niet te stoppen“ weet MIKA. En zo bouwt de song opnieuw op via basdrum. Aan trucs uit het Grote Entertainmentboek geen gebrek op Les Ardentes: grote ballonnen in het publiek, songs neerleggen zodat het publiek na een tijdje massaal kan rechtveren: de fans doen er graag aan mee. Maar MIKA heeft die truukjes ook nodig om de aandacht te blijven houden. Heel wat festivalgangers blijken tijdens minder bekende songs hun Luikse wafel niet of nauwelijks te kunnen houden tot "We are golden“ door de speakers klinkt en het ultieme feesten begint, finaal ondersteund met kleurrijke confetti.  MIKA bezorgde Les Ardentes een fijne afsluiter van dag twee. Pretentieloos entertainment noemen ze dat al valt ons op dat de man steeds vaker zijn veelzijdigheid als pianist én dat van zijn muzikanten uitspeelt. Muzikaal zit het dus erg lekker, al is het lang, te lang geleden dat MIKA nog een verpletterende hit scoorde. Binnen het genre pop waarvoor ie koos, is dat welkom.
