He can belt and proclaim with authority, but he's best when he's smooth and mellow -- an asset, to be sure, since not many modern R&B vocalists trade in subtleties. Lyrically, Foxx is not subtle -- he's a freak who at least balances the crude ("Make you turn around and touch your toes/The next thing, girl, you already know") with the silly ("I know you're used to dinner and a movie/Why not be my dinner while makin' a movie?"). Unpredictable is actually predictable in that all but one of its tracks have something -- or a lot -- to do with baby making. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session.     LOVE SONG JOHANNA STILLMAN MASTER’S PROGRAM IN FINE ART KONSTFACK, 2017 2 A work of art appears like a promise, if I were to compare it to something else in life it would be a romance. Like a romance a work of art asks me to question myself, step into a new world and transform. A work can be long or short, but always creates a life in itself, some sort of bubble that later must crack. In one sense it all ends when I leave a work as a finished piece. The feeling of it, like a break up. The main drive in the process is passion, but also unsure-ness, I cannot stop exploring the things I do not understand. Romantic love is one of the strangest things I know of: the language of it, the “you and I”, the feelings, the attractions, the changes and the break ups. The comparison therefore goes in many directions: I make art about romantic love. And my art making is like romances. In this text I ask questions about muses and lovers, as questions about readers and viewers. You, as a reader, should be prepared to follow my unsure-ness. Kelly Rowland had moderate early success as a solo artist, but her releases seemed reactive to the climate of contemporary R&B -- like she was either struggling to find her own voice, or was stifled by the industry. Just as it seemed like she might be neglected for good, the Top 20 Hot 100 hit "Motivation" and the following Here I Am placed her at the forefront of pop-R&B. Instead of a four- or five-year wait -- the length of the gaps between her second and third albums -- Talk a Good Game followed within two years. Unsurprisingly, its makeup is quite similar to that of Rowland's previous release. It begins with a pair of suggestive/explicit tracks in "Freak," a jam co-produced by Danja and Rico Love, and the Mike Will collaboration "Kisses Down Low." After "Motivation" and the conspicuously absent "Ice," the latter verges on overkill but contains a hard-to-resist melody and light-hearted touch. The following "Gone" is a violent derailment that, like Janet Jackson's superior "Got 'til It's Gone," incorporates Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," but the album quickly stabilizes with satisfying, if mostly unexciting, material. Other than the lack of European dance-pop, the main difference between this set and Here I Am is the presence of Rowland's most revealing and powerful song. "Dirty Laundry," made with the-Dream and Carlos McKinney, is an adeptly ornamented ballad that openly details Rowland's envy of Beyoncé's solo success, as well as the pain that came from an abusive relationship.
