F. D. MAURICE, M.A. (1848) The writer of this play does not differ with his countrymen generally, as to the nature and requirements of a Drama. He has learnt from our Great Masters that it should exhibit human beings engaged in some earnest struggle, certain outward aspects of which may possibly be a spectacle for the amusement of idlers, but which in itself is for the study and the sympathy of those who are struggling themselves. A Drama, he feels, should not aim at the inculcation of any definite maxim; the moral of it lies in the action and the character. It must be drawn out of them by the heart and experience of the reader, not forced upon him by the author. The men and women whom he presents are not to be his spokesmen; they are to utter themselves freely in such language, grave or mirthful, as best expresses what they feel and what they are.

They Call These The Careless Years, But I Know They’re Wrong! THE CARELESS YEARS (Arthur Hiller, 1957).

  • Stanley Kubrick: Producers and Production Companies
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive Stanley Kubrick: Producers and Production Companies Thesis submitted by James Fenwick In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, September 2017 1 Abstract This doctoral thesis examines filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s role as a producer and the impact of the industrial contexts upon the role and his independent production companies. The thesis represents a significant intervention into the understanding of the much-misunderstood role of the producer by exploring how business, management, working relationships and financial contexts influenced Kubrick’s methods as a producer. The thesis also shows how Kubrick contributed to the transformation of industrial practices and the role of the producer in Hollywood, particularly in areas of legal authority, promotion and publicity, and distribution. The thesis also assesses the influence and impact of Kubrick’s methods of producing and the structure of his production companies in the shaping of his own reputation and brand of cinema. The thesis takes a case study approach across four distinct phases of Kubrick’s career. The first is Kubrick’s early years as an independent filmmaker, in which he made two privately funded feature films (1951-1955). The second will be an exploration of the Harris-Kubrick Pictures Corporation and its affiliation with Kirk Douglas’ Bryna Productions (1956-1962). Thirdly, the research will examine Kubrick’s formation of Hawk Films and Polaris Productions in the 1960s (1962-1968), with a deep focus on the latter and the vital role of vice-president of the company.

James Fenwick In 1969, after nearly twenty five years in the business and over fifty screen appearances starting with The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (Milestone, 1946), Kirk Douglas took the decision to begin donating his personal and business papers to the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR). Over the next decade, Douglas continued to donate his papers, leading to the division of the original collection into seven broad categories: correspondence and personal papers; financial and business records; television; theatre; radio; motion pictures – produced; and motion pictures – unproduced. Taken together, the Kirk Douglas Papers cover one of the most important and transformational eras in American film history, commencing with the twilight years of the studio system in the 1940s, through its break-up in the 1950s, and the eventual conglomerization of the Hollywood studios in the 1960s.

  • On Location in Ixopo 45
On location in Ixopo 45 On location in Ixopo The filming of Cry, the Beloved Country in 1950 ‘There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it.’ These lines, the famous opening sentences from Alan Paton’s novel, Cry, the Beloved Country, have been hand-painted on to a large boulder that can be found in the grounds of Carisbrooke School. This rural primary school with 218 pupils and eight teachers was founded in 1911 and is situated in the Carisbrooke valley about 10 kilometres outside Ixopo. Its red corrugated-iron roofs are shaded by a row of mature gum trees, themselves dominated by Mount Nyeza. The school has close associations with Paton’s novel as it was one of the locations for the film version of the book shot in 1950 and released in 1951 which starred Canada Lee, Charles Carson and Sidney Poitier. With the help of production stills featuring younger versions of the gum trees, head- master Dan Shoba pointed out a building used in the film. Though not alive at the time, Shoba recalls the filming with gratitude. ‘After they made the film God has been on our side. First the film-makers donated a building.’ This structure was once a church, but now houses a classroom and a library. A plaque on the wall announces: ‘This building is the rememberance [sic] of the taking of the film ‘Cry the Beloved Country’. Below are added the names of Zoltan Korda and Alan Paton.
