  • VOCAL 78 Rpm Discs Minimum Bid As Indicated Per Item
VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just slight marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the era of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. Also featured are many “Z” shellac Victors, their best quality surface material (later 1930s) and PW (Pre-War) Victor, almost as good surface material as “Z”. Likewise laminated Columbia pressings (1923- 1940) offer particularly fine sound. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-‘14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually featuring translations of the text or similarly related comments. VERTICALLY CUT RECORDS. There were basically two systems, the “needle-cut” method employed by Edison, which was also used by Aeolian-Vocalion and Lyric and the “sapphire ball” system of Pathé, also used by Rex. and vertical Okeh.

  • Vladimir Rosing Memoirs of a Social, Political and Artistic Life
1 Vladimir Rosing Memoirs of a Social, Political and Artistic Life Transcribed, Edited & Annotated by Richard Rosing 2 To G.L. with all my love and gratitude1 1 The identity of “G.L.” is a mystery. The dedication exists in one of the earliest manuscript books, written in the 1930s. Because it is the only dedication Val ever made, it has been retained here. 3 Prologue Without an End, Without Beginning One never knows what lies beyond the instant; one never knows when and where began the chain that brought this instant or the next. Our finest intellect vainly tries to grasp, to understand what lies beyond its scope — the infinite — the endless space and time, without an end, without beginning. As I write this very instant, and as you read this line, somewhere a new life is born, and somewhere a life has ended. To understand the reason for and the purpose of our lives, to understand the cruelty of nature — when God who has created all and rules is a God of love — is a vain effort. We must accept that it exists beyond our understanding, yet the human brain in all its arrogance and conceit refuses to accept defeat, and carries on the struggle to conquer nature, space, and maybe time; but it cannot conquer time, that goes relentlessly forward, forward, bringing in its course the endless joys, misery and suffering of human minds and bodies. In any case, here on this Earth some say true life only begins unhampered by the body — [the] bones, flesh, nerves and senses that bring to us mortals such joy and such cruel suffering.

It predominantly concerns her performances on the stage of the Warsaw Government Theatres. The account is supplemented with a report on her other activities in that period. The work is based on source material gathered from the press published in Poland, Leipzig (“Signale für die musikalische Welt”) and Saint Petersburg (the Polish-language weekly “Kraj”). The reviews of Kruszelnicka’s performances constitute a valuable record of the reception of her art and, at the same time, paint an interesting picture of a fragment of Warsaw’s musical culture at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – a time when traditional views on art clashed with modernist trends. Keywords: Salomea Kruszelnicka, operatic vocalism, Warsaw opera, Polish musical culture in the period of the Partitions, Polish musical criticism at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The most important events in the history of Polish opera at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries undoubtedly include the employment of Emil Młynarski as the direc- tor of the opera, the premiere of Goplana by Żeleński, the first staging of Widma [Phan- toms] by Moniuszko and, finally, the recruitment of outstanding soloists.

All the Records in this List are 10=inch Size, Price 10/- each, FOR USE ONLY on the GRAMOPHONE Which is MADE in various styles by THE GRAMOPHONE AND TYPEWRITER LTD. GRAMOPHONERECORDS. In issuing the present Supplement to our Catalogues of Gramophone Records, we add yet another famous name to the long list of musical celebrities who have recognised the wonderful perfection to which the Gramophone has attained. Madame Albani, the world-renowned Diva, while staying a short time ago at Truro, heard, to her astonishment, 'l'amagno's voice singing the " Morte d'Otello" in an adjoining room in her hotel. Filled with amazement she sent to the room in question and discovered that one of our representatives was entertaining some friends with his Gramophone. Madame Albani immediately requested him to bring the instrument to her salon, and our representative was not released until he had pjayed every one of the records he had with him, some of them twice over. The result was that Madame Albani visited the Gramophone Laboratory and made several records for us, two of which we now give to the world, only remarking in publishing them that Madame Albani has accorded the most unstinted praise to the Gramophone, and has expressed her entire satisfaction with our records of her voice.
