searching for a newA freedom Companion to African American History499 Edited by Alton Hornsby, Jr Copyright © 2005 by Blackwell Publishing Ltd Chapter Twenty-nine Searching for a New Freedom HASAN KWAME JEFFRIES In the immediate aftermath of emancipation, the lives of former bondsmen and bondswomen failed to meet their basic expectations. Quite simply, their lives too closely resembled the status quo antebellum. Indeed, African Americans remained landless, lacked ownership of the fruits of their labor, lost the vote (through elec- toral fraud and discriminatory changes to state constitutions) shortly after they had received it, and were subject to vicious, vulgar, and random acts of racial terrorism as a result of the federal government being more interested in protecting the southern economy than in protecting black folk. In response, African Americans organized to implement their vision of freedom, which differed substantially from that of white southerners and white northerners. By agitating for their civil and human rights, especially for good-quality education, political participation, personal safety, and control of their own labor, the former slaves launched the fight for racial justice that continues to this day (Harding 1981). The most important link in this intergenerational struggle is the modern Civil Rights Movement. It represents the most highly organized manifestation of African Americans’ post-emancipation search for a new freedom and, if measured narrowly in legislative terms, the most successful. Popular interest in the Civil Rights Movement has swelled during the last two decades. Evidence of this trend is the surge in the number of feature-length films that explore aspects and events of the civil rights era, such as Freedom Song and Boycott. -

LPB MISSION STATEMENT To air programming that is intelligent, informative and entertaining and challenges the viewer to explore new ideas and views. To produce Louisiana programming that showcases the state’s rich history, explores the issues that are important to people of the state and profiles the people and places that make Louisiana such a unique place to live. STATEMENT FROM LPB PRESIDENT/CEO BETH COURTNEY This was a year filled with elections…both national and local, and this was a year that Louisiana Public Broadcasting expanded our role as a forum for deliberative democracy. We staged a traditional debate with our partner, the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), for the U.S. Senate race and followed the campaigns in all the races on Louisiana: The State We’re In. We also explored difficult issues and complex topics with average citizens in our new monthly series Louisiana Public Square. Each month, LSU’s Public Policy Research Lab at the Manship School of Mass Communication’s Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs selects citizens who reflect our community to join together in a conversation about topics as diverse as education, property taxes, roads, and religion and government. Civil and thoughtful dialogue is needed in our state and country and LPB is the only place all Louisianians can come together to have that conversation. We also come together to celebrate our unique history and culture. This year, our Louisiana: A History series was honored with a duPont Columbia Award, one of the highest national honors a documentary can earn. We applaud our home-grown talented production team. -

Document A DocUMENT A was prepared as an offer of proof in the trial of ihe United States of America v. William L. Patterson, executive secretary of the Civil Rights Congress. It will be recalled that Mr. Patterson was cited for contempt of Congress after Representative Henderson Lanham o.f Georgia, acting chair man of a Congressional committee investigating lobbying, had called him "a black son of a bitch" and had attempted to assault him. Although the purpose of the document was to show that Congressman Lanham had been illegally elected under the Fourteenth Amendment, it is also a social document of unusual worth, revealing how state officials combine with the Ku Klux Klan, and use the Klan as a quasi-official arm of govern ment, to prevent the Negro people from exercising their Constitutional right to vote. It is valuable, too, in that it reveals methods and techniques in widespread use in other states throughout the South. -
