Herbs That Attract Butterflies Cooking with Herbs If you’re cutting back on your dietary salt, try using herbs as flavorings. Add most herbs about thirty minutes before the end of cooking time. Simmer them slowly Catmint with the food to release the flavor and retain the volatile oils. Dill  Dried herbs are more potent than fresh – one teaspoon dried equals one Lavender Oregano tablespoon fresh. Mint Parsley  Experiment with herbs! Try them in old recipes, taste new ones, combine herbs. Sweet Marjoram  Use moderation. Some herbs may be overpowering if too much is used. Familiarize yourself with the strongly flavored ones – sage, rosemary, thyme, and oregano.

Did you know? Dill is an important host plant for caterpillars of swallowtail butterflies. It’s also a must for pickling.

Many gardeners choose to plant annual flowers because they are relatively inexpensive. They are also easy to grow if planted correctly at the right site. Annuals also provide leeway for experimentation, since they last for only a single season. Annuals compliment perennials well, making them great to fill in empty spaces.

- 9 - Growing Perennials

Annuals bloom often during the growing season, but perennials bloom only once or twice per season. Perennial shapes range from ground hugging and creeping like phlox to very tall like hollyhocks. Perennials can last many years while annuals usually only last one season. Perennials grow and multiply each year but can be kept in check by dividing the plant and replanting the division in another area of your garden. Most perennials prefer soils that are well drained and high in organic matter. Many varieties that can tolerate poor soil conditions will thrive in richer soil. Trimming dead flowers and damaged parts during the growing season helps to conserve the plant’s strength. This can extend the growing season of most perennials.

While perennials are still small, hand-weed or hoe lightly in-between your plants to prevent weeds from becoming established. As your perennials grow and spread, there will be fewer weeds. A mulch of bark, applied to bare soil, and spread in-between plants will also help prevent weed development and will conserve moisture.

After the first killing frost remove all dead foliage to reduce disease and prevent areas where insects can winterize. To protect perennials from the winter, cover your plants with a layer of leaves. Place evergreen branches over the leaves to prevent the leaves from blowing away, and to keep plants dry.

Strawberry Care: The biggest weed in many strawberry fields is the strawberry itself. Overcrowding of fruiting beds is a serious problem. It decreases berry size, increases disease problems, and makes picking more difficult. Plants should be no closer than 6” in any direction with 10’12” wide rows. Strawberries can be grown in most soil types; however, a good well drained loam soil will consistently produce a better crop. Select an area that will receive full sun most of the day. Avoid shaded areas and any place where water will stand after a rain as standing water can greatly increase the chances for disease. Do not grow strawberries for five or more consecutive years on the same site with some type of crop rotation. Do not plant strawberries in areas where tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or eggplant have been grown within the past 4 years. These vegetables carry the root rot fungus Verticillium, which also attacks strawberries. (Excerpt from Indiana Berry & Plant Co. catalog.)

- 26 - Pepper Plants Peppers absolutely demand warm weather, as they are more susceptible to cold weather damage than tomatoes. Never rush transplanting of seedlings to the garden. Be certain all danger of frost and cold weather has passed. Peppers thrive best in soils rich in organic matter, with adequate moisture. They should be grown in full sun, and caution should be exercised in the application of fertilizers containing nitrogen, as plants will tend to produce excess foliage rather than fruits. 4-Pack $2.50 Flat: $17.00 4-inch pot: $2.25 Pricing (4 plants per pack) (8 packs per flat) Name Description Size Maturity Sweet Types Big Bertha TMV resistant. - 27 - Tomato Plants

The “determinate” (D) or “bush” varieties are those that reach a certain plant height and then stop growing, with most fruit borne over a four- to six-week period. “Indeterminate” (I) varieties continue to grow and flower throughout the season but have less mature fruits at any one time. More recently “Indeterminate Short Internode” (ISI) varieties have been developed, which combine the controlled growth habit of a “determinate” with the unlimited production potential of an “indeterminate.”

Tomato Transplanting & Culture Tips

When transplanting hardened-off tomato plants to the garden, choose a cloudy, wind-free day, if possible, or plant in the late afternoon. Water plants thoroughly about one-half hour prior to planting, using a full- strength solution of water- soluble fertilizer. Plants should be set in deeper than they originally were in the containers. Since tomato plants root freely from any portion of the stems buried beneath the soil, they may be planted down to the first leaves. Even if some of your plants have become leggy, dig out furrows and lay in the plants, burying excessively tall stems. Partially fill the hole with soil to within about 3” of the surface and water in thoroughly, being careful to settle soil around roots, eliminating air pockets. Finish filling the hole with soil and firm soil around stem. Keeping plants well-watered during the growing season, particularly during periods of drought, will help ensure better yields and help control problems such as blossom end-rot. Blossom end-rot is a blackening of the fruit on the blossom end due to a calcium deficiency often related to water uptake. Proper soil testing, lime applications and foliar treatment with calcium solutions like our “Yield Booster” will also help avoid this problem. - 29 -
