The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers Vol. 16 No. 1, Jan-Apr 2014 FROM PRESIDENT’S DESK 2013 was full of struggles yet victorious for IETE as not only did we successfully complete our 60th year, but also carved the path for opening up of an IETE University, demonstrating From President’s Desk 1 our vision. Though it is yet to crystallize and take form, but I am happy to receive positive IETE 45th MTS – 2014 2 vibes from many of our esteemed members & well wishers. Some other memorable moments during the year were organizing of 1st IETE Student Forum National Congress on Apex Forum on "Vocation 4 1st & 2nd Feb 2014 concurrently with the celebrations of IETE Students' Day, giving unique and Skill Development" opportunity to students and scholars to interact with various technocrats & experts. st st Report on 1 IETE 5 Another event worth stating was the celebration of 1 Women's Day at IETE HQs, as well in accordance with this year's cherished objective of empowering women in engineering role. A few selected women in top Women's Day -2014 leadership positions in their profession, were invited to share their experiences. Memorial Lecture IETE's 45th Mid-Term Symposium on "Broadband –Technologies and Services for Rural India", inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of SRM University, Dr M Ponnavaiko, was conducted in the serene News from Centres 7 th th surroundings of SRM University on 4 -5 April 2014 at Chennai. The symposium was very well received, Calender of Events 19 thanks to the efforts put in by the Technical Programme & Resource Generation Committee, Chairman IETE Centre and his team. The seminar was on very topical subject and provided a good opportunity to Celebrating IETE Achievers 20 assess both the technology & market scenario in India. On this occasion, the Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Awards and Distinctions 21 Lecture was delivered by eminent scientist, the Padma Shree Awardee, Dr A S Kiran Kumar, Director SAC, Ahmedabad. Report on 1st IETE 22 It is a matter of great pride that a number of IETE members have been awarded coveted Padma Awards Student Forum National this year on Republic Day celebrations. On behalf of IETE fraternity I congratulate Dr R A Mashelkar, HF- Congress – 2014 IETE, Dr K Radhakrishnan, HF-IETE, Dr A S Kiran Kumar, FIETE & Dr M Y S Prasad, FIETE, for ISFs Activites 23 receiving the Padma Vibhushan, Padmabhushan and Padma Shree Awards, respectively. I am also happy to inform that the Publication team at IETE Hqs is now working with the new Publisher PACs Activites 27 "Taylor & Francis, UK" to achieve increased impact factor and to be referenced in Web of Science. We also hope that soon our IETE journals will have wide submission by range of authors to suit our readership. In MTS-2014 Council bid farewell to 10 Centre Chairpersons who will be completing their tenure on 30th June 2014. I hereby thank these Council Members for their work and continuous efforts to make IETE grow. In these testing times, through their leadership experiences, rich diversity of perspective and initiatives, we saw continuous work shaping IETE for brighter future. I wish to remind one and all that the present issue of recognition of professional courses is a national issue affecting 14 societies and approximately 2 lakh students. I understand how difficult it is for IETE students and all other IETE members to go through these trying circumstances. Rest assured that all your apprehensions would be fully addressed, as the student's future is paramount to us and we are trying to reach out to the concerned authorities, bureaucrats, political leaders, eminent personalities so that the solution to the issue at hand can be arrived at. However, IETE appointed a high level authorized Committee, which interacted with over 500 students on 12 April 2014 at IETE Hqs and worked out a roadmap for months to come to redress their apprehensions. I would like to reiterate that student's concerns would be fully addressed with in a time bound manner. IETE HQs, New Delhi Communications made so far with the concerned institutions, organizations, Govt agencies are being CS AND TEL reflected on IETE website.
