    Vol. 15, No. 85 Sunday, September 9, 2018 USPS 9400 / Cost .75 ¢ THE LORD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS By The Salvation Army TEXAS CITY (September 2018) – Supporters of The Salvation Army were surprised to learn re- cently that the Groundbreaking ceremony they had on their calendar for the new Moody Family Corps Community Center had been changed into a ribbon cutting. “Life threw us a curveball,” Chris Doyle, Campaign Chair, shared with the crowd on September 6 at the Mainland Church of Christ. “Right as we were about to file for our construction permits, Pastor Robert Goolsby came to us and asked if we would be interested in purchasing this facility verses building one right beside it.” “I was a bit taken aback because we had been working on this project for over four years and I wanted to see it come to life,” recalls Doyle. “Captains Patrick and Jennifer Jones came to see me. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 89 Community and Veteran Scholarship Both scholarships will offer $250 to a Texas City High School senior. The recipients will be chosen based on academics, character, and involvement in school extracurricular and community activities. Texas City-LaMarque Chamber of Commerce Deadline: April 24, 2020 The Education Committee of the Texas City-LaMarque Chamber of Commerce will award $1000 to the chosen student. The student will receive $500 a semester upon receipt of copy of registration and an acceptance letter from the college.     Vol. 16, No. 5 Sunday, December 2, 2018 USPS 9400 / Cost .75 ¢ LETTER TO EDITOR: VALERO STEPS UP On, Wednesday, November 28, Valero Texas City Refinery presented checks totaling $415,000 to 23 local charities with programs serving children in our area. Programs included those bat- tling food insecurity, encouraging education, providing mentoring services, and advocating on behalf of kids in foster care. The funds were raised though the Valero Texas Open Benefit for Children (VTOBFC), where Valero employees, business partners and other sponsors rally together across 12 golf courses. This year the VTOBFC raised over $12 million. Since Valero started this effort in 2002, it has raised over $138 million for children’s charities worldwide. The Texas City ISD Foundation for the Future was one of the organizations receiving gener- ous funds enabling the Foundation to: 1. Continue our “Helping Hands Program (HHP)” - Providing assistance to students, who par- ticipate in the free or reduced lunch program and/or do not have basic personal items. 2. Develop and implement two new projects; “The Lunch and Learn” – Teaching prenatal care and child development; and, the “Start Fresh at TCHS with Suds and Stuff” – Creating a resourceful and multipurpose area for Texas City High School’s economically disadvantaged students and their families. MESSAGE fr o m th e FOUNDER s the Terry Foundation approaches our twentieth anniversary, A what began modestly in 1986 is now the largest private source of scholarships for a growing number of Texas public universities. After its first seventeen years at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University, the Foundation expanded for the first time in 2004 to include Scholars at the University of Houston and at Texas State University-San Marcos. In 2005, the Board of Directors approved additional growth for the Terry Foundation Scholarship Program to the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Texas at Dallas. The first Scholars for UTD and UTSA were selected at interviews in April, 2006 and will begin college in the fall of 2006. The Foundation is pleased to welcome these outstanding institutions to the Terry program. In April, the Foundation selected a total of 157 new 2006 Scholars. We are indebted to our Scholars and Scholar Alumni who joined the Howard L. Terry members of our Board of Directors in serving on the panels to select the new class. This new class, when combined with our existing Scholars, will bring the total number of active Terry Scholars at all six universities to more than six hundred students. The spring of 2006 also brought graduation to 137 Terry Scholars, many of whom graduated with honors. They join a growing body of Scholar Alumni that now numbers over 900.
