TV Club Newsletter; June 6 COVERING THE TV BEAT: GOOD FORMULA: The popularity of FIRESIDE THEATER, can be traced to Frank Wisbar, producer-director, whose most im- portant job, he .says, is the careful selection of material. Wisbar explains that Fireside dramas are not necessarily "arty." They are aimed towards the general public but, says the director, "Ours is not a formula show. It does not follow a set prescription." There, in a few words , you have the secret to one of the most popular telefilm series on the air . .. ... NEW SOURCES NEEDED FOR TV: Television producers are looking over the major magazines as sources for video material. A deal is cooking to film stories used in Cosmopolitan and the Reader's. Digest rna terial is already going before the cameras ....... And, a new source of summer entertainment will be the replacement show of THE GOLDBERGS when DENNIS DAY goes off for the season . .. .. HUSBAND & WIFE: Recently pretty Patti Palmer, wi fe of com- edian JERRY LEWIS , debuted on the COMEDY HOUR. She sings, and very well, too -and now she and Jerry are making some terrific Capital records together . ... .. TRUMAN RUM0RS: The rumors are flying again that former Pres- ident Truman will star in a video series. We doubt them be- cause Mr. Truman has just been signed by Doubleday to com- plete his memoirs for publication in 1955. This will keep the ex-President mighty busy between now and t hen . .. .. NO VACATIONS: The Sunday clown prince of comedy, RED SKELTON, isn't going to rest after all this summer . It looks now as if the Redhead will do some personal appearances across the nation - playing to some of the audiences he's entertained all winter long. His health has improved so that the doctors have given the green light for such a tour . .. WALLY COX, · or Mr . Peepers, if you prefer, will get little rest .on his "vacation" ... The delightful comedian has been signed to play the lead in the strawhat version of the famous Broadway hit "Three Men On A Horse." . .. HE STARTED SINGING: Lyle Sudrow, who plays Bill Bauer in the "GUIDING LIGHT" , started out as a singler and joined the Shuberts to sing baritone roles in operettas, Just as he was warming up to his new success, the induction into the Coast Guards got him, and he spent three years in Uncle Sam's service during World War II .... 2 STAR-LITE : The title, "Coni edy Find of the Yea.r," honorarily tagged on RED BUTTONS by critics and v iewers alike since the "Ho-Ho" comic made his TV debut last October, is ,definitely confirmed by the increased station line-up and current rating of his "RED BUTTONS SHOW." But tons , talented young Broadway and night club comic whose hilarious monologues and sketches have establi shed him a s a solid TV favorite in the short span of six months, is now s e en weekly over 90 stations and has a "Top Ten" rating of 45,1 , according to the latest reports .... BIG DOINGS: This is a b-i-g p-r-o-d-u-c-t-i-o-n! KUKLA, FRAN and OLLIE will appear with the Boston Pops Orchestra on Sunday, June 7 , in an original operetta based on the famous legend, "St. George and the Dragon." . .. .. CHATTER: Lovely MARIA RIVA and WILLIAM RIVA will co-star in a t elevision series to be filmed in Israel, Turkey and Egypt ... .... MARY MARGARET McBRIDE has started her 20th consecutive year in radio and still shuns television GALE STORM, whose popularity has soared due only in part to her acting ability on "My Little Margie , " will be paid a cool $10 , 000 per week for a night club date in Las Vegas . ... ON THE LINE : How do script writers feel about having their lines crossed out for the sake of shortening a script? Ask PEG LYNCH, creator-writer and star of "Ethel and Albert" - she'll tell you it's a trying ordeal.· Since every TV writer must write a little more than is required rather than a little less, television scripts must always be shortened during rehearsals , Miss Lynch admits that she , herself, never can decide on which lines to cut and which lines to keep, therefore always respects the judgement of director Walter Hart on this score. "When I see a line get cut out, it's just as if someone ' ha'd just operated on me" .... .. FROM REEL TO REAL: Handsome GEORGE REEVES, who has become a national hero to millions 6f youngsters for his portrayal of SUPERMAN on television, was signed by Columbia Pictures to play the roll of Sgt . Stark in "From Here to Eternity." He had to get a G.I. haircut for the part, and now WHIT ELLWORTH, the producer of the Superman film series, is waiting patiently for his hair to grow back . .. Production will be held up about a month while the Reeves' locks are sprouting ... .. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • Is Now the Time to Retire the Star-Spangled Banner? by Daniel Hathaway
Is now the time to retire The Star-Spangled Banner? by Daniel Hathaway During the recent demonstrations responding to the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, a number of monuments were toppled that represented the racist history of the United States. Among them, in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and elsewhere, statues memorializing Francis Scott Key were pulled down. Key was author of the poem Defence of Fort M’Henry, inspired by the British bombardment in Baltimore Harbor in September 1814, that became the text of The Star-Spangled Banner. Joined to a tune by British composer John Stafford Smith, the song was officially adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1889 and became our National Anthem by resolution of Congress in 1931. The problem with Francis Scott Key, a Baltimore lawyer and district attorney, is that he had owned slaves since 1800. While he went on public record to oppose human trafficking, he also represented the owners of runaway slaves. The problem with his poem is that for 21st-century America, its sentiments seem less and less conducive to uniting a divided nation. The “Star-Spangled Banner” refers to the mammoth flag (originally measuring 30 by 42 feet) with fifteen stars and stripes symbolizing the states that formed the Union at the time. Raised “by dawn’s early light,” the flag, now owned by the Smithsonian Institution, offered proof of an American victory over the British during the War of 1812. Fittingly for the occasion that inspired it, Key’s poem begins with military imagery.

COVERING THE TV BEAT: GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS ON COLOR TV ARE BEING LIFTED. How- ever, this doesn't bring color on your screen any closer. Color TV will arrive after extensive four-month field tests of the system recently developed through the pooled research of major set manufacturers; after the FCC studies and ap- proves the new method ; and after the many more months it will take to organize factory production of sets and to in- stall color telecasting equipment. TED MACK AND THE ORIGINAL AMATEUR HOUR RETURN to your TV screen April 25 to be seen each Saturday from 8:30 - 9 p.m. It will replace the second half of THE ALL-STAR REVUE, which goes off. WHAM-TV and WBEN-TV have indicated that they will carry the show. THREE DIMENSIONAL TV is old stuff to the Atomic Energy Commission. Since 1950, a 3D TV system, developed in coop- eration with DuMont, has been in daily use at the AEC's Argonne National Laboratories near Chicago. It allows technicians to watch atomic doings closely without danger from radiation. TV WRESTLERS ARE PACKING THEM IN AT PHILADELPHIA'S MOVIE houses where they are billed as added stage attractions with simulated TV bouts. SET-MAKERS PREDICT that by the end of the year 24-inch sets will constitute 25% of production. FOREIGN INTRIGUE is being released for European TV distri- bution with one version in French and the other with Ger- man subtitles. "I LOVE LUCY", WILL PRESENT "RICKY JR.", the most celebrat- ed TV baby, in its forthcoming series now being filmed in Hollywood.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.
