1 Preach the Gospel

'Preach the gospel at all times and use words if you must' is a phrase often attributed to St Francis of Assisi. Actually there is no evidence that it originated from St Francis, although it is the kind of thing he would have said. It was a phrase that came into my mind when I looked at some readings recently before writing a sermon and it’s one that can be used and misused to make various points. The Revd Pamela Macnaughton, currently NSM Ordained Pioneer Minister in the Benefices of Bishopthorpe, Acaster Malbis and with , has additionally been appointed as Diocesan Training Adviser (NSM) for Pioneering Ministry.

The Revd Mike Fairey, NSM Assistant of the Benefice of York St Hilda and of the Benefice of York St Lawrence with St Nicholas, will leave his post with effect from 16th May 2012. The Archbishop has granted Mike Permission to Officiate.

The Revd Paul Johnson, NSM Assistant Curate of the Benefice of Whorlton with Carlton and Faceby, has resigned with effect from 24th June 2012 in order to concentrate on his ministry as School Chaplain at Ian Ramsey School, Stockton on Tees.

The Revd Canon John Waller, RIP

It is with regret that we announce that the Revd Canon John Waller, Canon Emeritus of York Minster and former Vicar of Holy Trinity, Hull, died on Thursday 19th April 2012, aged 76.

Canon Waller was ordained priest in 1962, moved to the Diocese of York in 1988, and served as Vicar of Holy Trinity, Kingston upon Hull from 1988 until his retirement from full-time ministry in 2001. During this time, he also served as Area Dean of Central & North Hull (1994 to 1999), as Rural Dean of Hull (1996 to 2000) and as an Honorary Canon of York Minster and Prebendary of Weighton (1995 to 2004). Canon Waller was granted Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of York following his retirement from the College of Canons in 2004.
