PALABRAS CLAVE: eSports, televisión, streaming, plataforma, producción audiovisual ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis is to define and historically place eSports as a multimedia genre, to present the advantages and disadvantages of the main streaming platforms that broadcast content related with eSports, and to observe in which manner the presence of eSports is increasing in television. In the same way, the main broadcasting and directing features and particularities of an event have been analyzed, using an applied example. The present research is structured in three sections. The first one conducts an analysis of the evolution of eSports, from its origin until today. For this purpose, a bibliographic review has been made, including scientific articles from academic magazines and specialized press. The second part address eSports from a technical perspective, especially from the content distribution field, both via the Internet and traditional media. Finally, the third part consists of an applied analysis of an eSports event, from the media production point of view. The event chosen has been broadcasted both via streaming and traditional television. Both distribution channels have been studied in this thesis.

  • Pioneering E-Sport: the Experience Economy and the Marketing of Early 1980S Arcade Gaming Contests
International Journal of Communication 7 (2013), 2254-2274 1932–8036/20130005 Pioneering E-Sport: The Experience Economy and the Marketing of Early 1980s Arcade Gaming Contests MICHAEL BOROWY DAL YONG JIN Simon Fraser University This article sets out to historicize the development of e-sport (organized competitive digital gaming) in the early 1980s using three new conceptual frameworks. We identify e-sport as an accompaniment of the broader embryonic gamer culture, a hallmark of the “experience economy” concept, and as a succession of consumer practices whose development was coterminous with the rise of event marketing as a leading promotional business strategy. By examining the origins of e-sport as both a marketized event and experiential commodity, we see this period as a transitory era bridging different phases in the areas of sports, marketing, and technology, resulting in the expansion of competitive cyberathleticism. Keywords: e-sport, professional gamer, arcade, experience economy, event marketing, video games, public events Introduction In the early 2000s, competitive player-versus-player digital game play (henceforth e-sports) has been a heavily promoted feature of overall gamer culture. Although e-sport—known as an electronic sport and the leagues in which players compete through networked games and related activities (Jin, 2010)— has existed since the early 1980s, the increased attention toward the activity in the 21st century has signaled that the gaming industry is adopting more flexible avenues of public event consumption with the goal of generating higher profit margins. While stand-alone e-sports events are common, their use as adjuncts of other industry events, including major trade shows, press conferences, and even traveling orchestras, demonstrates that competitive gaming continues to play a major role in the machinery of game industry event marketing.

  • By Placing Its Thumb on the Scale of Competition, the Commission by This
....@-- by placing its thumb on the scale of competition, the Commission by this Rule has distorted and restricted competition in other ways affecting pro gram producers, syndicators, independent stations, new networks, and network affiliates. The Rule has come to be seen largely as a measure to promote the fortunes of independent and UHF stations. The evidence shows that today many independent stations are more profitable than affiliates. Further, UHF affil iates of ABC, CBS and NBC are victims of the Rule, yet on average are fi nancially weaker than UHF independents, intended beneficiaries of the Rule. Furthermore, any "handicapII affecting independent UHF stations in the past has been reduced or eliminated, due to forces other than PTAR. The economic costs, penalties, restrictions and consumer harms caused by PTAR cannot be justified by an increase in diversity, because PTAR has not increased diversity. The number of outlets for local broadcast programming is unchanged by the Rule. The number of sources of programming avail able to those outlets is reduced by the terms of the Rule. There is no basis to believe that the Rule enhances the diversity of prime-time broadcast program content (or the variety of viewpoints), and there are some reasons to believe that diversity has been reduced. In any event, the flowering of new media alternatives makes irrelevant whatever marginal change in broadcast network affiliate content diversity, if any, can be attributed to the Rule. • Project Horseshoe 2018 Report Section 4
Participants: A.K.A. "Who Watches The Watchmen" Steve Meretzky, Independent Dave Rohrl, Mobile Game Doctor Juan Gril, Independent Ian Schreiber, RIT Kenny Shea Dinkin, King Mission statement: to understand why players passively watch games … either as a pure spectator, or in their own gameplay during periods of low interaction or low agency … and to give gamemakers a blueprint for creating watchable games. What makes games watchable? YouTube influencers and Twitch streaming have become a major force affecting the game industry. Each year, tens of millions of players enjoy spectating the growing category of esports, while at the same time the growing phenomenon of player walkthroughs has many millions of players watching videos for game hints and help or pure entertainment. In addition to these purely passive experiences, there are important and widely adopted forms of gameplay that in many ways looks more like traditional experiences of watching rather than traditional experiences of playing. These include games where the player has little or no control of the game’s outcome (as in a slot machine or an on-rails linear narrative game) and games where the player only interacts with the game quite infrequently (as in idle games, anthill-type simulations, and map-based MMORTS games like Travian). We now live in an environment where games don’t just have to consider what it’s like to play them, but also what it’s like to watch them - even if the player gets to interact with them sometimes. Professional sports have been designed this way for many years (although we only get a new one of those that catches on once every several generations), but it’s a relatively new design consideration for today’s video game and board game designers.
