2012-13 Season Outlook by Coach Campion

After experiencing a rough season last year, all five starters and ten letter-winners are determined to improve in the 2011-12 season. They have been pushing each other throughout the summer and pre-season. Losing no seniors from last year’s team, this year includes twelve returning players comprised of five seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores. Bolstering our team with quality recruits, we took special effort in widening our scope of targets previously limited by geography by utilizing modern tools at our disposal. This effort has provided one of our most diverse rosters spanning the country from California to Florida, bringing in a total of eleven new players comprised of two transfers and nine freshman.

This year’s team is quicker, bigger, stronger, and more experienced than the last several years’. The competition from the top to bottom of the roster has never been as narrow. We are encouraged by the level of intensity, effort, and competition that is being put out every day as we progress.

Tasha Wagoner was the cornerstone in our offense last season and will likely still be as important. We hope to build around her in keeping junior Heather Eddings on the floor longer as her impact is paramount, and she struggled with fouls last season. Point guard Nicole Felker continues to run the offense, and with her vast experience on the varsity level, we look forward to the stability she affords us at the position. Kendra Austin gives us a mismatch in the guard position, given her size and quickness, which allows us to use her inside and out. Tanya Garner returns as a multi-position, big effort player who will keep us from losing performance as she comes on the floor. Kaitlyn Norton gives us a high motor, quick back-up at the point guard position with little drop-off in production and capability. Alex DeLong provides us stability in the forward position and will provide invaluable leadership on the team.

Challenges will include wiping the slate from last year’s disappointing record and focusing on being the team we are capable of being. Improvements are a renewed emphasis on conditioning and strength training, which we feel will help us win the games we were unable to finish during last year’s season.

2012-13 Season Outlook by Coach Oleen

The 2012-13 team will be a very good defensive team as we return to our roots. Defense, regrettably, was a weakness last year by our standards.

We have shooters this year who will be much better at offensive execution and shot selection, which will make us a much better shooting team.

We do not have Mack trucks in the paint this year, but we have some quick, athletic “bigs” who have good skill sets and better fit into the way we like to play the game.

Our returners are providing great leadership. After finishing in a tie for second in the conference for the previous two years, this past season was unacceptable to them. A renewed level of accountability is returning to Bethany basketball under their leadership.

We have added a lot of experience to the 2012-13 team as well as some good freshmen to add to our returning core. The relentless level of play has returned to Bethany basketball.
