What is the Difference between a Magnet Program and a CTE Program?

Magnet Programs: • Allow students to pursue special interests, talents or career goals through specialized academic programming within Pittsburgh schools. • Enroll students in schools other than a child’s home school. • Require application for admission, where placement is determined by lottery to fill available spaces. Once the lottery has been conducted, any remaining spaces will be given on a first come, first serve basis to eligible applicants. If more students apply to a program than there is space available, students will be placed on a waiting list. • Are available at all grade levels from K–12.

Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE): • Provide students with the opportunity to pursue academics as well as a career or trade, providing earning advantages before and after graduation, as well as hands-on learning opportunities. Space is limited by the maximum safe capacity per laboratory or classroom. • Required application for admission, where placement is determined by available spaces in each program. Applications are processed on a first come, first serve basis. If more students apply than there is space available, students will be placed on a waiting list. • Are available to students beginning in 10th grade. (Exceptions are Cosmetology, which is available to students beginning in 9th grade, and Engineering Technology, which is available to students beginning in 11th grade.) • Not all CTE programs are offered at each school site. • Signature programs exist at some schools.

Who is Eligible? • All programs are available to students living in the City of Pittsburgh, the Borough of Mt. Oliver, and to Wilkinsburg students in grades 7–12. • Non-resident students are required to pay tuition to attend any CTE or Magnet program and are not considered for admission until after all city residents have been placed. Applications for magnet admission for Wilkinsburg students assigned to Pittsburgh Public Schools will be evaluated in the same manner as those from city residents. • Students who are home schooled or attend private school may attend any Career and Technical Education program within their regional cluster. • Charter School students are not eligible to attend Career and Technical Education programs.

Offerings and Options in Pittsburgh Public Schools 8 Parent Hotline: (412) 529-HELP (4357) | www.pps.k12.pa.us Understanding Preferences and the Weighted Lottery

In the spring of 2009, the Board voted to adopt a new Magnet admissions process that incorporates the use of preferences and a weighted lottery system. Under this system, after preferences, children can gain additional chances in the lottery based on meeting certain requirements.

Students New to Pittsburgh Public Schools / Students Attending Non-PPS Schools: If you wish to receive additional weights for PSSA/Standardized test proficiency, attendance rate, free or reduced lunch or behavior/conduct, please submit evidence with your application. If you do not, you will not receive these weights.

What does it mean to have preference for a program? If you have preference for a program, it means you are automatically placed at the top of the admissions list at your first choice only. Sibling preference only applies during the lottery period, and only at K–5 or K–8 schools.

What preferences and weights (extra chances) exist for each Magnet and CTE program?

Preferences Weights

If more applications are submitted then there are spaces available after preferences are issued, then a School Program Sibling Preference Program Continuity weighted lottery will occur where children will receive additional chances for each of the following:

How do I get an extra chance for a “completed application?” All you need to do is apply and you have at least one chance to be admitted.

How do I get an extra chance for “Free and Reduced Lunch?” If you currently qualify for reduced price lunches or free lunches as part of the federal program, our records will indicate this, and you will receive an additional chance to be admitted. Though all students receive school lunch at no cost, this weight applies to students who are identified as economically disadvantaged.

How do I get an extra chance for having a “sibling” at the school to which I am applying? You must note on the application (online or on paper) the name of the sibling in the school where you are applying. This will be verified on our end—and this child must be attending the school during the year for which the child is applying. If it is not noted on the application, the weight will not be applied. If it is later found that this child is not a sibling of the child, the weight will not be applied.

How do I get an extra chance for having “previously attended Pittsburgh Public Schools?” Our computer records will indicate this, and you will receive an additional chance to be admitted.

How do I get an extra chance for having “95% or higher attendance” the year before? Our computer records will indicate this, and you will receive an additional chance to be admitted.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are evolving to keep up with today’s technology and tomorrow’s workforce needs. Jobs with family sustaining wages are out there and CTE can give students a great head start on getting one by offering project-based learning activities, hands-on training and industry certifications.

Beyond the education students get in the classroom, CTE programs are uniquely engaging and valuable because of the experiences they get outside the classroom. Our programs are enriched by partnerships with local organizations and businesses— providing opportunities for our students to learn from and network with industry professionals.

Students have the opportunity to earn advanced standing in a post-secondary institution upon completion of a CTE program. Students also have the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school. Several programs provide dual enrollment opportunities for students to earn college credits while in their CTE program through our partnership with the Pittsburgh Promise.

Our CTE programs make sure that all students are workforce-ready when they enter the job market. We are pleased to offer a wide variety of CTE programs across our high schools.

Career and Technical Education Programs are divided into two categories, Signature Programs and Regional Programs.

Signature Programs (descriptions can be found on page 18) Signature Programs are programs that are only offered at one school in the District. Students who are applying for a CTE program that is not within their region must transfer to the school which houses the CTE program. These programs are often in high demand, so early application submission is encouraged. Students are not able to transfer to a CTE program outside of their feeder pattern, if their CTE program of choice is available within the same region as their home school. In the share-time program, students attend their home schools for a half-day and travel to the school housing their CTE program of choice for the remainder of the school day.

Transportation Children who live more than 1.5 miles from school in grades K–8 or more than 2 miles away from school in grades 9–12 are eligible for transportation services. If you have questions regarding transportation to and from your child’s school, please call (412) 529-8125.

Transportation for Career and Technical Education (CTE) Students Any student who is a resident of the City of Pittsburgh or the Borough of Mt. Oliver, and attends either a Pittsburgh Public School High School or a private high school, is able to enroll and attend any Career and Technical Education program within his/her regional cluster. If a Career and Technical Education program is not at the school that the student currently attends, then the student may travel to another high school, within the same region, and attend the program.

To provide the means to travel between schools, a monthly bus pass will be issued to each student at the home school. Thus, a morning program student would be expected to arrive at their CTE School via PAT bus. At the end of the morning CTE program, students would use a shuttle bus to return to their home school. Afternoon students would travel by shuttle bus from their home school to the CTE program school mid-day. These students would then use a PAT bus to return home. Children who enroll in Signature CTE programs (see page 17) must attend school in that facility or in that regional cluster.

Non-Resident Students If you are not a resident in the City of Pittsburgh or the Borough of Mt. Oliver, and are interested in tuition rates for enrolling your child in Pittsburgh Public Schools, please call (412) 529-HELP (4357).

Tuition Waivers Children of Pittsburgh Public School employees who do not live within the City of Pittsburgh or Borough of Mt. Oliver may be eligible for tuition waivers to attend the Pittsburgh Public School that corresponds to the feeder schools of their parent/guardian’s place of work. If applying for a tuition waiver, acceptance to a program is only granted if space is available after City residents have been placed. This includes Pittsburgh CAPA 6–12.

English as a Second Language English as a Second Language (ESL) is an instructional program for students whose dominant language is not English. The program is designed to increase the English language proficiency of eligible students so they can achieve academic success. Call (412) 529-3516 for more information.
