HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

As the Lenten season draws to a close, and we prepare for the joyous feast of Christ’s Resurrection, we should each make a good confession of our sins, so that we might prepare our hearts to be worthy tem- ples for Jesus, our Eucharistic King. We also will offer confessions on Wednesday of , March 31 (1:00-2:00 p.m.). There will be no confessions on or Easter Sunday (April 3-4).

During Holy Week, Our Lord, the Lamb of God, goes to Calvary to make the full, final Sacrifice of the Cross to win our salvation. He invites us to follow Him along His ‘via dolorosa,’ and He says: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). May this Holy Week and Easter open for us the door of faith, that we might enter more profoundly into the Sacred Mysteries. Asking the Lord for Easter blessings for you and your loved ones, may the joy of Christ, risen from the dead, increase your faith, enliven your hope, and set your heart on fire with charity. In the Heart of Jesus,

Rev. Msgr. Richard Zborowski Rev. Scott Haynes Pastor Associate Pastor

The closing event of the spring 40 Days for Life at the Flossmoor Planned Parenthood abortion clin- ic, 19831 Governor's Hwy. in Flossmoor, will be a Jericho March around Planned Parenthood's commercial block on Palm Sunday, March 28th at 2:00 p.m.

A Jericho March takes its name from Joshua having led the Israelites at the command of the Lord to go around the wall of Jericho for 6 days with the priests taking up the Ark of the Cove- nant of the Lord, and on the 7th day when they went around the wall of Jericho for 7 times then it came crumbling down. They have become a common form of prayerful, peaceful protest of abortion clinics.

Good Friday Way of the Cross -- 10 a.m. Roseland AND Flossmoor Planned Parenthoods

The Stations of the Cross will be prayed publicly outside the Planned Parenthood abortion clinics in Roseland, 11250 S. Halsted, Chicago, and Floss- moor, 19831 Governor's Hwy., on Good Friday, April 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. at both locations. Page 5 THE CALL TO DIE The Fifth Sunday of Lent, Year B

“Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” John 12:24

Death does not necessarily sound all that inviting to most people. So, how should we look at death?

First of all, death, literally speaking, is a passing from this world to the next. When our time comes in accord with the will of God, we should welcome it and anticipate our full immersion into the life of God.

But this Scripture passage speaks of death on another level. We should see ourselves represented by the grain of wheat that achieves its potential only by falling to the ground and dying. In that natural act, it is planted in the fertile soil and grows, producing an abundance of good fruit.

How should we see ourselves represented in this natural action? We do so by embracing death to self so that we can be planted in the fertile soil of the grace of God and produce an abundance of good fruit. Dy- ing to oneself means that we let go of all selfishness in life. First, all intentional acts of selfishness must be let go, but then even unintended selfishness must be let go. What is “unintended selfishness”?

Unintended selfishness is a way of referring to everything in life that you hold on to and cling to simply be- cause you want it for yourself. This could include even good things such as a loving relationship. It’s not that we should do away with good things in life, such as loving relationships; rather, we must not cling to any- thing, even good things, for selfish motives. Love, when it is authentic love inspired by God, always is de- tached and selfless, looking only toward the good of the other. This is the purest death to self that we can live. When this level of love is lived, that of complete selfless detachment, God enters into our lives and into each particular situation of our lives, bringing forth an abundance of good fruit. This is a gift that is more powerful than anything we can do on our own, because it is the fruit of a total death to self, transformed by God into new life.

Reflect, today, upon your calling to die. First, reflect upon the literal death from this world that you will one day experience. Do not fear that moment; rather, see it as a glorious transition into the fullness of life. Sec- ond, look for ways that you can die to yourself, here and now. Identify practical and concrete ways that God is calling you to this form of death. Know that in this act, glorious gifts of new life await.

Page 6 VEILING THE CROSS AND SACRED IMAGES DURING

Why are images veiled beginning on the fifth Sunday in Lent, know as “Passion Sunday”? Traditionally, the two weeks of “Passiontide” begin on the fifth Sunday of Lent. The first week is Passion Week, and the second week is Holy Week. The traditional reading for this Sunday focuses on the increasing hatred against Christ from the Jewish authorities. They accuse Him of being a Samaritan, committing sorcery, blasphemy, and as being possessed by Satan. They don’t think that Christ is “a good teacher.” They think He is a demon- ic agent.

The Gospel reading for Passion Sunday in the 1962 Missale Romanum comes from the eighth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel ends with these words: “They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.” (John 8:59) According to Saint Augustine, at this moment when “Jesus hid himself,” Christ in fact became invisible by virtue of His divine nature. Saint Augustine writes: To help signify this mystery, Catholic statues and images are veiled with purple cloth beginning at the Vespers on the evening before Passion Sunday. Jesus “hides Himself.”

The statues remain covered until the Gloria of Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling reveals that Christ has revealed himself as risen and victori- ous. It’s also a pious custom for lay Catholics to cover blessed images and statues at home during Passion- tide with purple veils. Our Catholic Faith is so rich! Be sure to teach your children and grandchildren these beautiful and ancient traditions!
