.............................................................................................................. 37 Page 2 of 2 This report is the formal product resulting from the work of a team of people over a six month period of time. Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, asked that a task force to be formed in order to critically look at the fraternity and sorority community at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. The official charge was to analyze the fraternity and sorority experience here at UMKC through identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (challenges), with a special emphasis on how the student experience can be improved. The task force looked at, but did not focus on the future of fraternity and sorority housing and the idea of a Fraternity and Sorority Row. The Fraternity and Sorority Task Force has generated a report which covers a great deal of territory and presents some concrete recommendations with input from students, alumni, chapter advisors, faculty and

Coit, Greek Chapter Housing History Project June 5, 2002 Information courtesy of University of Illinois Archives and the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing This history was produced as part of the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing’s Greek Chapter History Project. The Society was founded in 1988, with the goal of preserving the historic buildings that embody the history of the nation’s largest Greek system, and educating the public about the historical significance of fraternities and sororities on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Dues paid by member fraternity and sorority chapters and donations from chapter alumni fund the Society’s work. In keeping with their mission, the Society began the Greek Chapter History Project in May 2000 in conjunction with the University of Illinois Archives. The GCHP aims for nothing less than producing a complete historical record of fraternities and sororities on the University of Illinois campus by employing a graduate assistant to research and write histories of campus chapters. Making the work possible are the extensive collections of the University of Illinois Archives, especially its Student Life and Culture Archival Program. Supported by an endowment from the Stewart S. Howe Foundation, the heart of the SLC Archives is the Stewart S. Howe collection, the world’s largest collection of material related to fraternities and sororities. 2002 The Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing and the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. The national sorority now known as Alpha Delta Pi, the first recorded secret society for college women, spent its first half-century as one of the nations’ most prominent local fraternities.

    OF KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA WINTER 1966 Intelle~t Plus Drive Equals Su~~ess The capability to achieve high scholastic standing is herein well demon­ strated by our roster of 1966-67 Kappa Undergraduate Scholarship winners. It is indispensable to be knowledgable and to know something about life. The women of our fraternity and society should not and cannot be satisfied with drabness, uniformity and cultural emptiness. We should crave beauty in music and fine arts and excellence in scholarship. We in turn trust that all Kappa women recognize that knowledge is limited but that the intellect is unlimited. Using one's intellect in the pursuit of knowledge and inner resources of dedica­ tion to relevant accomplishment should garner academic success. There is little correlation between creativity and high marks but if you sally forth with will­ ingness, enthusiasm and conscientiousness you provide a direct assault upon scholarship. The act of creating is an act of commitment, an attitude, a position, a stand; it is nothing less than building your stance in life. The vitality and sense for relevant accomplishment gained by hard work and good scholarship should spread to academic work and thence to your lifetime work whether it be the arts, sciences, domesticity or business. Academic endeavor is something like delving in an untidy drawer wherein some find a key to a gate. The key unlocks a gate to fertile fi elds of creativity and exciting adventure in the realm of speculative thinking. For others, the key is shoved aside as the thought flashes through the mind, "What is it I'm looking for"? We are unsullied in our belief in the essential value of academic achievement and it needs to be said that we must increase and improve or find ourselves sorely handicapped in attaining it.
