Gratitude- the virtue I encountered and experienced in Haiti

I am grateful to return to Minnesota where it is 85 degrees colder than in L'Saile, Haiti. The impoverished town is about 4 hours west of Port au Prince, Haiti's capital. In L'Saile we encountered gratitude in the young and old. The young were grateful for our attention, candy, volleyball and soccer. They expressed gratitude through excitement. For example, when they saw our group they would run up to us yelling our names with great joy! They were excited we were there. We celebrated three Masses with the Catholics there and each time they thanked us for our presence. What was it they were so thankful for? Personally, I think they felt remembered and that someone cares about them. We as human beings desire to know we are cared for and God showed us that he does indeed care by sending Jesus Christ to save us! So my prayer is that the people of Haiti encountered Jesus Christ in us.

Adam Fierro, Steven Fierro's son, is a full time missionary in L'Saile. He ministers to the elderly in a very powerful way by bringing them Jesus in the Eucharist. We visited the elderly with him. We celebrated the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick and gave them Holy Communion. It was very beautiful to see their grati- tude. We visited one lady on Saturday and told her we would bring her Holy Communion on Sunday and she was very emotional. We brought her Holy Communion around 5pm as her house was our last stop of the day. When we arrived, she told us she had not eaten anything all day so she could receive Holy Communion! She was already malnourished and elderly, but she desired to receive Jesus in Holy Communion that she fasted the whole day! Granted, the Church has reduced the Communion fast to one hour, but she continues to practice the whole day fast! I am very moved by her piety and devotion to the Lord.

We gave out candy, food, crucifixes and rosaries. Each time we encountered gratitude. The priests at the parish welcomed us into their home for dinner twice during our trip. At one of the Masses, a young man climbed 40 feet up a palm tree to get us coconuts! They were so grateful to have us there and wanted to express that to us! An elderly man chopped up the coconuts so that we could drink the fresh coconut juice! An elderly lady brought me a cup so that I could drink it out of that! It was amazing! We were all so grateful for their hospitality and welcome!

As we return back to Minnesota, I am grateful for many things that I take for granted, like smooth roads, running water, hot water, lights, restaurants, vehicles, orderly traffic, garbage cans, the ability to communi- cate, washing machines, bussing for the students, good medical care, and many other things! In L'Saile there are 30,000 people. The police department in that town has one beat up truck! In fact, that truck could be pulled over and cited for many infractions in New Brighton, including broken lights and obstructed view due to the cracked windshield. However, that one vehicle serves its purpose in L'Saile and helps keep the people there safe. That is just one example of many, that displays the poverty we encountered. Yet despite this poverty, the people had a sense of dignity and joy. Where do they get that joy? It comes from the Lord! Each time we prayed with them, their deep faith was expressed through their enthusiastic participation in the prayers! They are grateful to God for each blessing they are given. Their gratitude inspires me to be grateful to God for the many, many blessings he continues to bestow on me. Take time to thank God for things you take for granted in your life.

Join the missionaries and I for a Haitian dinner and a presentation about our time in Haiti this Wednesday, February 13 at 6pm in St. Joseph Hall. We will begin with the meal and then share stories and photos from our trip. RSVP to Steven Fierro at the parish office for the meal.
