ABSOlutELY NORMAL CHAOS Setting the Scene Mary Lou Finney is less than excited about her assignment to keep a journal over the summer. But then cousin Carl Ray comes to stay with her family, and what starts out as the dull dog days of summer quickly turns into the wildest roller coaster ride of all time. I have lived most of my thirteen years in Bybanks, Kentucky, which is not much more than a caboodle of houses roosting in a green spot alongside the Ohio River. Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings (no, that is not true - he did not bring the chestnut tree or the willow or the maple or the hayloft or the swimming hole or any of those things which belong to me) and we drove three hundred miles straight north and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio. 'Where are the trees?' I said. 'This is where we're going to live?' 'No,' my father said. 'This is Margaret's house.' The front door of the house opened, and Margaret, the lady with the wild red hair, stood there. I looked up and down the street. The buildings were all jammed together like a row of birdhouses In front of each one was a tiny square of grass, and in front of that was a long, long cement sidewalk running alongside the cement road. 'Where's the barn?' I asked. 'Where's the river? Where's the swimming hole?' 'Oh, Sal,' my father said. 'Come along. There's Margaret.' He waved to the lady at the door. 'We have to go back.' Stripped of family, friends, pos- sessions and freedom, she lived to tell her story, a story she tells eloquently and power- fully in One Survivor Remembers. A Polish Jew, Gerda Weissmann lived six years under German rule. It was a time when Jews were stigmatized, discriminated against, harassed and beaten. Their houses of worship were burned; their places of business, looted. They were driven from their homes, imprisoned in ghettos and forced to work in slave-labor camps. And they were murdered — some where they lived, town by town, person by person; others in death camps, where millions were gassed in an assembly-line process that mimicked the great factories of industrialized Europe. -

It’s inherently pleasurable to trace so much of what we think and do today to their roots in ancient Greece and Rome, to make sense of their world and our own world through their world and of both worlds through their interrelationships with each other. That is, I believe, what is most special about the study of antiquity: we find, if we look closely, so many firsts in western culture: the first epic and lyric poems, the first plays, the first theaters, the first histories, even the first cinema (huh?). And through the literature of ancient Greece and Rome we encounter the first expression of certain ideas like community, democracy, and imperialism and of certain emotions like courage, curiosity, and love. If tracing things back to their roots, their origins in the past, excites you, you are in the right place, because that is what I am primarily interested in: getting back to the roots. With the prodding of his teacher, though, he begins to write poems of his own — about a mysterious blue car, about a lovable dog. Author Information Known for writing with a classic voice and unique style, Sharon Creech is the best- selling author of the Newbery Medal winner Walk Two Moons, and the Newbery Honor Book The Wanderer. She is also the first American in history to be awarded the CILIP Carnegie Medal for Ruby Holler. Her other works include the novels Love That Dog, Bloomability, Abolutely Normal Chaos, Chasing Redbird, and Pleasing the Ghost, and two picture books: A Fine, Fine School and Fishing in the Air. These stories are often centered around life, love, and relationships -- especially family relationships. Growing up in a big family in Cleveland, Ohio, helped Ms. Creech learn to tell stories that wouldn't be forgotten in all of the commotion: "I learned to exaggerate and embellish, because if you didn't, your story was drowned out by someone else's more exciting one." Love That Dog Recommended for Grades 4-8 Book Summary: Love That Dog Written as a series of journal entries, we meet a boy named Jack. Jack thinks poetry is for girls. With some encouragement from his teacher, he begins to write his own poems. As time passes, he goes from not wanting anyone to know he wrote the poems to offering advice on how to best format the poems for the class to read. [SPOILER] Influenced by one of his favorite writers, Walter Dean Meyers, Jack writes a special poem about the death of his dog. He becomes so passionate about poetry that he writes to Walter Dean Myers and convinces him to visit his school. In the end, Jack has discovered that he really enjoys reading and writing poetry. He uses poetry to express his feelings. Just as he was inspired my many famous poets, his poems now inspire his fellow classmates. At the end of the book, we can read all those poems which Jack referred to in his journal. Author Biography: Sharon Creech Sharon Creech was born on July 29, 1945 in South Euclid, Ohio. Her rowdy family consisted of Mom, Dad, one sister, and three brothers. (A fictional account of what it was like in her family can be found in her book Absolutely Normal Chaos. In the summertime, her family would take a vacation to Wisconsin or Michigan. Once they went to Idaho, which became the basis of her book Walk Two Moons. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Hiram College and a Master of Arts from George Mason University. -

Briginshaw This thesis has been completed as a requirement for a higher degree of the University of Southampton Thisthesis, by examining relationships between dancing bodies and space, argues that postmodern dance can challenge traditional representations of subjectivity and suggest alternatives. Through close readings of postmodern dances, informed by current critical theory, constructions of subjectivity are explored. The limits and extent of subjectivity are exposed when and where bodies meet space. Through a precise focus on this body/space interface, I reveal various ways in which dance can challenge, trouble and question fixed perceptions of subjectivity. The representation in dance of the constituents of difference that partly make up subjectivity, (such as gender, 'race', sexuality and ability), is a main focus in the exploration of body/space relationships presented in the thesis. Based on the premise that dance, space and subjectivity are constructions that can mutually inform and construct each other, this thesis offers frameworks for exploring space and subjectivity in dance. These explorations draw on a selective reading of pertinent poststructuralist theories which are all concerned with critiquing the premises of Western philosophy, which revolve around the concept of an ideal, rational, unified subject, which, in turn, relies on dualistic thinking that enforces a way of seeing things in terms of binary oppositions.
