Yet the discovery of gold and the white settlers’ appetite for land soon overturned the agreement. The

Remind stu- dents that the novel’s most joyful character is Gram, who shouts “Huzza, huzza” from the center of a Native American circle dance. • Have students experiment with concrete poems of their own. Suggest that they begin with a visual concept and then create the words to fit the idea.
