Mid-August and the swifts seem to have departed. I have seen The pied wagtails that have nested every year for several years very few swallows this year but there have been some nests under our solar panels have successfully raised a second brood around town. That day there was a torrent of water under some of throat, but I have seen fewer of them this summer. the beach huts.

I have caught a number of interesting moths in the trap. One rather drab looking specimen turned out to be a Fenn’s Wain- scot. It only occurs around and on the Suffolk coast north of Dunwich. I have been participating in the annual butterfly count, but the garden does not seem so attractive to the insects this year. I am not sure if this is a general decline in butterfly numbers; I hope not. I do like seeing the Holly Blues flitting around, they don’t land for long, but the verbena attract- ed one during one of my counts.

One surprise visitor to the garden was a sparrow like bird which had a red head and breast. I thought it was a rose finch but when I posted it on the Internet, I was informed that it was a male Mexican House Finch. It is an escapee, likely from the low countries. It has a green ring, but it has not been possible to see all the letters on it. Apparently, it has been seen on the coast from Dunwich north.

Another favourite of mine is the colourful Small Tortoiseshell. There is a buddleia along North Road which has attracted some together with Peacocks, Red Admirals and Painted Ladies. Halcyon
