Prior to 1962, both the USSR and Egypt had been cultivating alliances with al-Badr in an effort to secure their strategic interests in South Arabia. In the days following the 1962 coup d'état, Abdullah Sallal and his cohort of Yemeni officers established a republic and concealed the fate of al- Badr who had survived an assault on his Sana’a palace and whose supporters had already begun organizing a tribal coalition against the republic.

During the 11th century an earthquake occurred, causing damage to the octagonal part. The bottom survived, but it could only serve as a watchtower, and a small mosque was built on the top. In the 14th century there was a very destructive earthquake and the whole building was completely destroyed. The extensive Montaza Palace grounds first had the Salamlek Palace, built in 1892 by Khedive Abbas II, the last Muhammad Ali Dynasty ruler to hold the Khedive title over the Khedivate of Egypt and Sudan.

Ministry of Tourism and Issue: 7 July Antiquities Newsletter 2020 Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Resumption of Tourism to Egypt on 1 July with 147 Flights arriving to Sharm El- Sheikh and Hurghada Egypt started resuming inbound tourism to the coastal touristic governorates of South Sinai and the Red Sea. Tourists flocked to Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada during this month, as the two cities received 147 flights coming from Ukraine, Belarus, Switzerland, Hungary and Serbia. The two governorates received 26,000 tourists during the month of July. A lot of the tourist groups have returned to their countries after finishing their trips on the picturesque beaches of Egypt, enjoying the warm and sunny weather. No cases of COVID19 have been reported since the resumption of tourism to Egypt in those governorates.
