Outreach Notice—Fire Positions USDA FOREST SERVICE- Eastern Region Temporary Fire Hire July 15, 2018 The Eastern Region is looking for a committed, hardworking, highly skilled workforce to work in a variety of fire program positions on 15 national forests located in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The Fire and Aviation Management Program is very rewarding and requires talented people working safely as part of a team in a variety of specialized positions including district assistant fire management, fuels management, air tanker bases, dispatch, dozers, engine crews, hand crews, , interagency hotshot crews, and prevention.

The Fire Hire program is being implemented to streamline the hiring process for temporary fire positions and provide consistent hiring around the Region. This hiring process assists the national forests in the Eastern Region to fill vacancies in a more efficient and timely manner.

Job Announcements will open in USAJOBS.gov on August 1, 2018 and close on August 31, 2018 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.

Vacancy announcements may have an application limit so it is best to apply early for the positions, do not delay.

Duties:

Engine/Fuels/Suppression Crew: Serves as a member of fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of wildland fires, may independently perform recurring prevention, preparedness, fuels and suppression duties. Performs assignments as a wildland in developing a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices and terminology.

Midewin Interagency : As part of the National Fire Plan, the Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew was established in 2001. It is the only Hotshot crew within Region 9 and is strategically located in Wilmington, Illinois to serve both regional and national demands. The configuration is in alignment with the USDA Forest Service – Interagency Hotshot Crew supporting a 22 person crew configuration. The Midewin Hotshots operate as a Type 1 Crew from March thru August of each year. The Midewin Hotshot Crew can divide into small teams to engage in multiple incidents in different environmental settings, utilizing a variety of fire management and adaption strategies in both prescribed and wildland fire.

Eastern Region Outreach – 2019 Temporary Fire Hire Great Lakes Interagency Wildland Fire Module: Wildland Fire Modules (WFMs) facilitate the use of fire and other management techniques involving planned and unplanned wildland fire events. WFMs are highly skilled and versatile fire crews, which provide technical and ecological based expertise in the areas of: long term planning, ignitions, holding, and suppression, prescribed fire preparation and implementation support, hazard fuels reduction, and fire effects monitoring, resulting in fire fulfilling its natural/historic role to meet resource and management objectives.

Helitack: “Helicopter tactical delivered fire resources”. Crewmembers perform recurring fire suppression duties on a Helitack crew as a skilled aerial delivered firefighter. Functions as a crewmember during initial attack fires and large fire support working with helicopters to deliver water, cargo and personnel to remote locations. Loads and manifests helicopter personnel and cargo considering methods, weight distribution, necessity for securing, and safety briefings. Constructs helispots in remote areas and provides operational and logistical support. There are two exclusive use helicopter crews in R9. The Superior NF Helitack programs support regional and national aviation fire management efforts year round.

Dispatch: Serves as a dispatcher, receiving, filling and tracking resource requests for fire and other emergency incidents. Follows established procedures to perform a variety of technical duties common to the dispatch of personnel, equipment, aircraft and/or supplies according to pre-defined plans or in response to resource orders from the field.

August 1, 2018 ─ Application announcements will be activated in USAJobs (www.USAJobs.gov). August 31, 2018 ─ Application deadline for all announcements, 11:59 Eastern standard time. Apply through USAJobs.

November 12-16, 2018 ─ Fire Hire Application evaluation. Subject matter experts will generate Reference Evaluations and gather this information for selecting officials. Supervisory Reference Checks will occur this week. Please ensure your references are notified of this and they are available at the email address (preferred) or phone number provided on your application.

November 19-23, 2018 ─ Fall Fire Hire Selections. Representatives from each forest will make recommendations for hiring. Applicants selected will be notified by a Forest Service representative by phone. Applicants not selected will be notified by e-mail.
