A CATERED AFFAIR Musical : book by Harvey Fierstein; score by John Bucchino Old Globe Theatre, San Diego - Premiered 30th September, 2007; Closed November 11. It began previews on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, Broadway - previews 25th March, 2008. Opened 17th April, 2008 - Closed 27 July, 2008 SYNOPSIS In the Bronx in 1953, young lovers Jane Hurley and Ralph Halloran decide to get married. Jane and Ralph, along with her father Tom and his business partner Sam, happily exclaim the virtues of partnership. Timing is inauspicious, since the bride's brother has just been killed in the Korean War. The couple does not want a large, expensive wedding, and the bride's family needs the money to buy a full share of a taxi-cab business. As Jane's mother Aggie announces that the upcoming wedding will be held quickly and quietly in City Hall, the neighbourhhood women react. Dinner with the groom's wealthier family leads Aggie to decide to give the couple a huge formal affair, committing her and Tom's life's savings and bereavement cheque to an elaborate wedding with an extensive guest list and a lavish catered reception. Aggie feels guilty about having neglected Jane and sees an opportunity to plan the white wedding that she herself never had. The bride's gay Uncle Winston, initially hurt and furious at having been left off the original guest list, becomes a support for Aggie. Jane is initially beguiled by the attention, and happily picks out a wedding dress. But soon relationships are strained to the breaking point under the pressure of costly bridesmaids' dresses, cake layers and each detail. Aggie confesses to Jane that she and Tom were married because she was pregnant. Finally Jane and Ralph decide to call off the elaborate wedding and party and marry quietly as they had planned. The quiet and unemotional Tom finally expresses his love and caring for Aggie, and Tom and Aggie come closer together. As they get ready for the small wedding ceremony, Aggie secretly makes arrangements for Tom to buy his share of the taxi, which arrives in time for him to drive her to their daughter's wedding. On the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, Rosemary Harris, the legendary Tony and STOLE CHRISTMAS! Emmy Award-winner, Academy-Award nominee and popular icon for her role in the Nov 25 - Dec 30, 2007 Spiderman movies is starring in the American premiere of Eric Emmanuel Schmitt’s Old Globe Theatre Oscar and the Pink Lady. What an embarrassment of riches on our stages this fall! We recently unveiled detailed construction plans for the rejuvenation of our OOO Balboa Park campus. The plans are part of the Theatre’s $75 million capital and endowment campaign, which designates $22 million to support this important facili- IN THIS CORNER ties project. The centerpieces include the new Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, which encompasses the remaining Old Globe Theatre, a new second stage theatre complex, Jan 5 - Feb 10, 2008 and a new education center, as well as a complete redesign of the Globe’s Copley Plaza Cassius Carter Centre Stage and dining area.

    Harvey Fierstein (Actor, Playwright) Date of Birth: June 6th, 1954 Place of Birth: Brooklyn, NY Quick Overview: Harvey Forbes Fierstein is an American actor, playwright, and voice actor. Fierstein has won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his own play Torch Song Trilogy (about a gay drag-performer and his quest for true love and family) and the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. He also wrote the book for the musical La Cage aux Folles, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, and wrote the book for the Tony Award-winning Kinky Boots. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2007. Writing: Fierstein is perhaps best known for the play and film Torch Song Trilogy, which he wrote and starred in both Off-Broadway (with the young Matthew Broderick) and on Broadway (with Estelle Getty and Fisher Stevens). The 1982 Broadway production won him two Tony Awards, for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play, two Drama Desk Awards, for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Actor in a Play, and the Theatre World Award. The film adaptation earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination as Best Male Lead. Fierstein also wrote the book for La Cage aux Folles (1983), winning another Tony Award, this time for Best Book of a Musical, and a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Book. In 2007, Fierstein wrote the book to the musical A Catered Affair in which he also starred.
