Just to let you know the difference between a Company Call and a Meet and Greet: The regular Meet and Greets are held for each up- coming play at the Globe. They include all cast members, directors, producers with refer- ence to the Costume Design and Staging for the play. Whereas a Company Call embraces all aspects of the pro- duction of plays includ- ing all the carpenters, costume department,

electricians, lighting specialists along with the directors and actors. Plus all the administrative staff including business office, box office, etc. All permanent staff. So they encompass a lot more people and are much bigger than a Meet and Greet. Company Calls occur once a year. Page 15

LETTER FROM BARRY AND TIM

Dear Globe Guilders,

In the past three months the Globe Guilders have been instrumental in welcoming four new acting com- panies to the Globe: The Tale of Despereaux, The Underpants, As You Like It, and Romeo and Juliet. You’ve greeted them with delicious food (and deviled eggs!) at the Meet and Greets, made numerous airport runs, and offered a bevy of small gestures that mean so much to our visiting artists. Thank you for making them feel so valued and at home at the Globe!

Your dedication and hard work all go to support an extraordinary institution that is dedicated to serving the public good in a variety of ways. Since the last time we wrote to you, our shows have continued on this path. You sponsored The Tale of Despereaux, and by doing so financially supported its success. As You Like It was a sumptuous visual treat in addition to being one of Shakespeare’s more lighthearted works. Steve Martin’s The Underpants delighted audiences from the first preview, and every performance was a near sell-out. And Romeo and Juliet, which Barry had the pleasure of directing, is an innovative pro- duction which features special nuances not often seen in other productions.

Next month brings us the world premiere of Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, with an amazing cast and featuring music from the iconic movie, as well as new tunes by Tony Winner Tom Kitt. Later in September is the opening of Noura, a riveting West Coast premiere loosely inspired by Ibsen’s A Doll’s House from acclaimed playwright (and Old Globe/USD Shiley M.F.A. Program graduate) Heather Raffo. In the play, Noura and her husband are Chaldean Christian refugees from Iraq, celebrating their first Christmas Eve as American citizens. But the long-anticipated visit of an orphan girl they once sponsored, now a promis- ing college student, causes them to question who they’ve become and what they’ve left behind. The Wall Street Journal’s Terry Teachout calls this powerful drama “one of the finest new plays I’ve ever reviewed. Full of unexpected revelations and flashes of sudden, blinding illumination.” We think you’ll remember the play long after you see it.

We’re both delighted that the Guilders have become more involved in our arts engagement programs at the Globe and in the community. You’re a vital part of how we’re able to do this transformational work.

We so appreciate the support you offer - and the hard work you do - on behalf of the Old Globe and offer our heartfelt thanks to you for all of it.

With all our best,

Barry Edelstein Timothy J. Shields Erna Finci Viterbi Managing Director Artistic Director Page 20 Guilder Gazette

HISTORY MOMENTS

BRIEF HISTORY MOMENT - TALES OF “RAIN” IN THE THEATRE There are 15 questions sprinkled throughout the pages of a 62 page booklet produced by the Old Globe Theatre in 1995.

Question # 9: "Since 1984, how many perfor- 1 mances in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre have been can- celled due to inclement weather?"

Answer: "Only two out of nearly 1,000 scheduled performances (only in San Diego!)"

From 1984 to 1995, with almost 1,000 performanc- es, shows were rained out only twice.
