Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place. -

Press release May 2, 2012 No. 57/12 Former Porsche chief designer dies aged 81 Anatole Lapine is dead Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is mourning it’s chief designer of many years, Anatole Carl Lapine, who died on 29 April 2012 in Baden-Baden. Lapine headed up the Style Porsche design studio from 1969 to 1988. Michael Mauer, Porsche’s chief designer since 2004, paid homage to the deceased: “Anatole Lapine shaped Porsche sports car design over more than two decades. As a designer he didn’t follow fashion but was forever setting new trends with his concepts.” Anatole Lapine was born on 23 May 1930 in Riga, Latvia. After the war, Lapine served an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic with Daimler-Benz in Hamburg before attending the Hamburg Wagenbauschule. In 1951 he went to the USA where a year later he began work at General Motors in the advanced body engineering department. In 1965 Lapine returned to Germany and was put in charge of the Opel Research Center. On 15 April 1969 Lapine moved to Porsche as head of the styling department. In addition to the design of the Porsche 911 so-called “G Series” numerous new Porsche models such as the 924, 928 and 944 saw the light of day under Lapine’s direction. But Anatole Lapine and his style team also delivered a number of Porsche Engineering third-party client development design projects. The foundation of the Westfälischer Porsche Club Hohensyburg on 26th of May 1952 was the germ of a unique idea that today is brought to life every day by events held by around 640 Porsche Clubs around the world. Today, 181,000 Club members represent a life of Porsche enthusiasm and strong ties with the brand and with the Porsche company. Part 3 of our series highlights the period from 1973 to 1982 – from the G-model to the advent of the Porsche Club Coordination and the foundation of the national umbrella organisation in Germany. ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE GT4 EXTENDS BRITISH GT TITLE SUCCESS • Aston Martin Vantage storms to three 2020 British GT4 titles • AMR Academy racers Dan Vaughan and Jamie Caroline win drivers’ crown • TF Sport retains British GT4 teams’ and drivers’ titles at Silverstone • Vantage GT4 has won seven major DomestiC titles so far in 2020 Sunday 8 November, 2020, Silverstone. Aston Martin’s Vantage GT4 clinched three more titles in the British GT Championship finale at Silverstone, ensuring that the luxury sportscar brand’s entry-level 4-litre V8 customer GT car remains unbeaten in the UK-based series since its debut in 2019. Aston Martin Racing partner team TF Sport, and AMR Academy drivers Dan Vaughan and Jamie Caroline triumphed in the GT4 Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships with second place in class after a tough three-hour long Silverstone 500 encounter. The result – the duo’s fourth second place of the season – added to a victory at Snetterton and third place in the season-opening Oulton Park race, ensured they also finished top in the GT4 Silver Cup. Competitive from the outset, Vaughan and Caroline waged a season-long battle with fellow AMR Academy members and team-mates Connor O’Brien and Patrick Kibble, who took two class victories, allowing the team to notch up three class wins and a total of 12 podiums through the campaign. In the end, the champions finished on 170 points with the sister TF Sport entry third on 152.5. The Vantage GT4’s success in Britain mirrors that which it has enjoyed on the continent. -

But there is a lot more to this designer whose career spans two continents and most of the second half of the twentieth century, and who for thirty years, was close to Ferry Porsche. www.porscheroadandrace.com Le Mans 24 Hours, 15 June 1969: Richard Attwood takes a refreshing drink. Standing above is Hans Mezger (second from the www.porscheroadandrace.com right) and Anatole Lapine (third from right in Porsche jacket) Son of a half German half Latvian father and a Polish mother, Anatole Lapine’s first years were spent in Riga, the capital of the then (and since 1990 again) independent Latvia. His father owned a furniture warehouse, but this relatively comfortable middle class existence was to come to an abrupt end in 1941 when the Russians invaded Latvia and the Lapine family fled to (German occupied) Poland. As a young teenager in Poznan, Anatole joined the Hitler Youth (membership was compulsory) and discovered the joys of design as he assembled model aircraft for competitions. This was the calm before the storm. In 1944, with the Russians advancing across Poland, the Lapines were once again forced to flee, this time into Germany and when the war ended they found themselves refugees in a village outside Hamburg.
